Halliday Wine Companion
97 Points - James Halliday
Sourced from adjacent rows of 40-year-old vines hand-pruned to control the yield to 5t/ha. Cold maceration and pressed direct to oak for 18 months in French hogsheads. This is a seriously good cabernet from an excellent vintage. Its length is exceptional, as is its structure and slinky tannins, part fruit, part oak.

Sister's Run

Sister’s Run is serious fun. Their talented young winemaker Elena wears steel cap work boots every day of course, but carries a pair of high heels in back of the ute, only for emergencies, like last minute invitations to accept trophies at gala wine show dinners and the like.
Returning from a ‘knees-up’ at midnight, mid vintage, she managed to kick off one high heel and slip back into a boot’ just as the cellar crew cried out, ‘Run Sister Run’; and exactly then their winemaker and label took flight!
The stiletto and boot are Sister’s Run; an independently owned and operated winery with a fierce commitment to making the best wines they can from family vineyards. They don’t take ourselves as seriously as we take our wines, but agree with Elena, all you need to know about wine is the five ‘V’s and remember the best wine is the wine you like.

Inky hued, this is a densely packed Cab with concentrated black and red berry fruit, licorice, cedar and winter warming spice behind. It's as rich and mouth-filling on the palate as the color and aromas suggest, but with a lovely lift of tangy acidity to balance chiseled, powerful tannins.

This remains one of the best chardonnays from Chile from a warm year. Aromas of fine brioche, sourdough bread, minerals, lemon zest, oyster shells and a floral touch. Taut and medium- to full-bodied on the palate, with a beautiful texture and a fresh streak of acidity that's not too demanding. Flinty and really long. It spent 13 months in French oak barrels, with 28% new wood. 6,000 bottles made. Drink or hold.

There is iron savoriness and minerality that make this unique, with a Gevry-like grip and a structured profile. It brims with aromas of roasted spices, crushed shells, blood oranges and berries that extend to a tight, almost full-bodied palate supported by very firm tannins. 14 months in 300-liter oak barrels, of which 35% were new. Quite a structured pinot, with 18% whole clusters. 5,970 bottles made. Drink from 2027.

Sourced from 100+-year-old País vines that have since been grafted to Cabernet, the 2023 Selección de Parcelas Los Padrinos Cabernet Sauvignon was aged 15 months in 50% new barrique, mainly from Tonnellerie Taransaud. On the nose, it is pure and youthfully primary, slowly opening with a beautiful bouquet of black and purple fruits with bramble and tobacco accents. The palate is suave, elegant, seamless and concentrated, transitioning to an effortless, spherical and floating finish of remarkably refined tannins. The precision and integration of all elements here are simply spectacular. This is a benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon not just for Maule but for Chile as a whole, and it should have no problem developing for two decades, if not more.

Azienda Agricola Tornatore

Out of a Sicilian family heritage that traces back to the 17th century, the Tornatore’s Mount Etna wine ventures began in 1865. Today the family’s operations are headed by Giuseppe Tornatore, a businessman whose expertise led to the acquisition of some of the region’s finest north-facing vineyards in the early 2000’s. That heritage and the Tornatore’s profound respect and understanding of the land is showcased in wines that capture the essence of Etna, deftly balancing concentrated flavors, complexity, freshness and refinement.
The company lies in the northern side of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. The soils have volcanic origin and were created through the disintegration of lava, ash and stones from previous volcanic eruptions. The climate on the northern side of the Etna is characterized by mild temperatures, and more rain fall reflecting the influence of the Volcano. The combination of soil, climate and the skill of the winemakers, have made the northern slope of Etna an ideal area for the production of high-quality wines. “Our vineyards and our winery are only a few kilometers from our family home. Our entire family is rooted there. We have the greatest respect for this region, and we believe we have a responsibility to be stewards of Etna and to reflect its distinct character in our wines.” - Giuseppe Tornatore

Kellerei Bozen - Cantine Bolzano

Cantina Bolzano, based in the town of Bolzano, traces its roots to two of Alto Adige’s most historic cooperatives: Santa Magdalena, est. 1930 and Cantina Gries, est. 1908. After deciding to merge in 2001, Cantina Bolzano was created. Bolzano is located in the middle of a valley basin surrounded by hilly vineyards that grow from 200 meters above sea level up to 1000. North and south meet in this valley, and the sun warms the stony soils with its pronounced diurnal temperatures, protecting the vines from the cold.
The average growers’ plots in Sudtirol averages only approx. 1 hectare, and the area, with its famed reputation and steep slopes, is an expensive area to farm. The member of Bolzano (approx. 300 in all) own many of the best vineyards throughout the region, including the Valle Isarco, and pool their resources to create top quality wines. And while no grower is certified organic, many practice organic viticulture and all of them adhere to natural practices in their vineyards. Most growers have lived on their farms with their families for generations. They protect their land and cultivate their vineyards as they have done for generations with total respect of the environment where they live.

This is a typically exuberant, zesty NZ sauvignon blanc, but the nose is a bit downplayed with a touch of masking sulphur, that should recede with bottle age. Otherwise, expect the typical passion fruit, grapefruit, fresh herbs of the genre. It is medium weight, well balanced and lively. Some green chestnut, lime peel bitterness on the finish. Aromatic is the ways of Alsatian white blends, noble and arguably more Edelzwicker than Gentil. Alsace is a place where historically the grape variety is highlighted on the label, more so than the region, but these blends transform that thought. Noble follows that particular tradition with this blend celebrating growers and the places they farm. Comes together just a shade above bone dry, layered with citrus and a side of creamy orchard fruit, from riesling with gewürztraminer, ehrenfelser, oraniensteiner & pinot gris. Profoundly important for B.C. white wine, essential and appropriate, for wherever and whenever a bottle needs sharing. Drink 2026-2029. Tasted May 2026.

Cortonesi

“I’m a lucky man who has been given the opportunity to realize my dream and continue my family’s efforts making wine in the land where I was born.” – Tommaso Cortonesi
Tommaso is third-generation winemaker at Cortonesi that owns some of the most prized vineyards in the north and south-east of Montalcino. Favourable geography, rocky soils, and ingenious winemaking all come together to create some of the region's deepest and most elegant Brunello wines.
The Cortonesi family has been making wine since the 1970s. At first, wines were made to be enjoyed by family, friends and neighbours, but then in 1985, Cortonesi had gained enough traction within their community that they began to offer their wines commercially. Today, Cortonesi remains a family business that continues to work according to tradition, while employing modern technologies to the enhance the quality of their production.
Lovers of Sangiovese must experience “La Mannella”, a collection of wines exclusively sourced from Cortonesi's private vine land. This farm covers 56 hectares, eight of which are devoted to the production of some of the world's most coveted and age-worthy Brunello di Montalcino.

The South Okanagan Phantom Creek Cab Franc comes from estate blocks on both sides of the valley: The fresher, vibrant red fruit and spice come from Kobau Vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench; while the warm, showy, generous black fruit are from the east side Black Sage Bench. It's the blending that creates the magic here, balancing the best of both worlds and giving this franc a spicy red fruit vibrancy and a plush texture all dusted with sagebrush. The alcohol is below 15% this year, helping with the drinkability. Serve with any dish you like, as nothing will be too big for this red, while it's young.

Petite Cuvée leads with classic cedar, desert scrub, and black fruit aromas that shout the south Okanagan Valley. The blend, a 43/33/16/4/2/2 mix of cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot, syrah, and malbec, results in a well-rounded, mouth-filling red with moderate tannins and an easy drinkability. Winemaker Mark Beringer likens it to the style of red wine he made in Knight's Valley between Napa and Sonoma. Dark cherries and plums lead the fruit parade, while a savoury balsamic note represents the desert scrub landscape. It is an impressive vintage poised to age effortlessly through 2028-2030.

Heirloom Vineyards

Heirloom Vineyards was conceived in vintage 2000, when a young winemaking student caught the eye of a silly old wine judge. A love story ensued inspired by two vows: To preserve the best of tradition, the old world of wine and our unique old vineyards and to champion the best clones of each variety planted in the most appropriate sites embracing the principals of organic farming. Seven long vintages of trial and error passed before Heirloom Vineyards could make a wine that was fine enough to pass on to future generations. That is this wine.

Hanging tough, firm, taut and focused or a 2018 Bordeaux of such reasonable means. Fruit shows a hint or two of leathery, drying and secondary character but ample freshness persists. Stays well afloat without any logged behaviour dragging the fruit downwards or exhausting the wines spirit. Feel comfortable popping bottles for two more years. Last tasted January 2025.
Still very much a youthful Bordeaux with primary fruit not just intact but exhibiting all that joyous exuberance you want from a value-based Right Bank wine. Nice little touch of orange zest and toasted wood wafts. Creamed centre and plenty of parochial tact, followed by a liquifying of chalky tannins. Tight little package here and more than tidy value for current consumption and good drinking four or five years further down the line. Drink 2023-2027.
