Ca' del Monte

Ca del Monte is situated on the hillsides overlooking the village of Negrar, in the heart of Valpolicella. It has belonged to the same family for generations, and is now run by brothers Umberto and Giuseppe Zaconte. There’s nothing fancy about this place. The house and winery are modest - and are attached to a 17th century monastery.
The estate is approximately 50 acres, and its 15-65 year old vines lie on gentle slopes at 800-900 meters. They grow on four soils including clay, limestone, red volcanic soil with red stones, and “Toar,” a green volcanic soil. The vineyards of Ca Del Monte are planted with 20-40 year old vines of Corvina, Rodinella and Molinara grapes that are planted in poor soils that stress the vines and nurture the fruit. All of the farming is done traditionally and non-certified organic.

This a very agreeable, well balanced Valpolicella with classic, fresh aromas of sour cherry, rosemary, tomato leaf and spice. Also a hint of pepper. It is medium bodied, smooth and well balanced without relying too much on ripasso's baby fat to carry the day. Tannins are quite mild, some minor heat on the finish. The length is excellent. Very easy drinking but don't overlook its detail. Tasted Sept 2021

Azienda Agricola Tessari

The Tessari family have Soave in their blood. For three generations they have been extracting delectable wine from the well cared for vines of their Monteforte d’Alpone vineyards. With only a little over a hectare of Garganega grapes in the prestigious volcanic solis of Soave Classico, Antonio Tessari hand dug his cellar back in 1933 and started the legacy that continues today with his grandchildren: Germano, Antonio and Cornelia.
From vineyard to bottle, these three siblings oversee it all; with unwavering respect for tradition, quality and passion for the art of winemaking. The volcanic soils of the hillside are rich with basaltic rocks and clays, which guarantees the health of the plant and the promotes the mineral and floral aromas that are characteristic of the Garganega grape. Truly artisanal wine making at it’s best.

Bright and savoury, this Soave offers plenty of freshness and chalky minerality. Salty and delicately floral with a pleasant toastiness. Green apple, acacia and honey add further dimension to the palate. A youthful Soave that should develop nicely over the next 2-4 years. Tasted February 2022.

This latest iteration of Grisela is another salty volcanic number, not the one of the most lush fruit but surely one of a particular Soave mist. Juicy and full of tang, yellow fruits and flowers, even a hot of metal and botanical tonic. Hard to find more complexity from garganega at this price. Drink 2022-2024. Tasted February 2022.

Azienda Agricola Tornatore

Out of a Sicilian family heritage that traces back to the 17th century, the Tornatore’s Mount Etna wine ventures began in 1865. Today the family’s operations are headed by Giuseppe Tornatore, a businessman whose expertise led to the acquisition of some of the region’s finest north-facing vineyards in the early 2000’s. That heritage and the Tornatore’s profound respect and understanding of the land is showcased in wines that capture the essence of Etna, deftly balancing concentrated flavors, complexity, freshness and refinement.
The company lies in the northern side of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. The soils have volcanic origin and were created through the disintegration of lava, ash and stones from previous volcanic eruptions. The climate on the northern side of the Etna is characterized by mild temperatures, and more rain fall reflecting the influence of the Volcano. The combination of soil, climate and the skill of the winemakers, have made the northern slope of Etna an ideal area for the production of high-quality wines. “Our vineyards and our winery are only a few kilometers from our family home. Our entire family is rooted there. We have the greatest respect for this region, and we believe we have a responsibility to be stewards of Etna and to reflect its distinct character in our wines.” - Giuseppe Tornatore

Villa Calcinaia

Villa Calcinaia is situated in the centre of Chianti Classico near the town of Greve-in-Chianti. This historic estate has been home to the Counts Capponi since 1524, and is maintained by Sebastiano Capponi and his brother Niccolo. In 1992, Count Sebastiano Capponi became the first in the history of the family to manage the winery personally, giving a new life to the vineyards and the cellar.
The family owns 200 hectares of land planted with olive trees, vines and pine trees. Organic farming is the standard at Villa Calcinaia where 75 acres of vineyard are planted with Sangiovese, Merlot, Canaiolo, Grechetto, Vernaccia, Trebbiano, and Malvasia. Through every vintage, the wines are crafted with food in mind. They are balanced, elegant, perfumed, and savoury yet refreshing with restrained vigour and intensity that ensures longevity.

A reminder that this Greve in Chianti left banker (of the Greve River) comes from the calcareous side, part Alberese and part Pietraforte soils. As such and in a famous vintage the Calcinaia Annata is a "crispy" sangiovese and though generally so, very much speaks to this Montefioralle bank of the Greve commune. Classic and held with great Capponi class. Last tasted April 2021.
The estate Annata, composed of 90 per cent sangiovese and (10) canaiolo. Grapes are hand-harvested and macerated in stainless steel tanks, followed by 20 months aging in wood casks. Yes there is some deep tradition in Sebastiano Capponi’s 2016 from the most excellent vintage and there is also some forward thinking, neo-modernist’s approach to making Chianti Classico. Coming into the zone just about now but there is a grip here to indicate 10 years of developing structure. The sculpturing and the timelessness are wholly deserving of representing the Capponi crest. Drink 2021-2028. Tasted May 2020.

This is a nicely ripe, fresh Chianti Classico with lovely currant, sour plum and floral aromas, plus fine dried herbs (tarragon), fennel, and not much oak presence. Sangiovese, as always, like Rosso and Brunello but in Lèonus a quicker skin maceration on earlier harvested grapes. A performative style with low level extraction, especially of tannins and any possible green or astringent distractions. Looking for and finding immediate amenability with the same sangiovese from Montalcino indicator lights that signal place and time. Also higher acidity, better for matching food right now, easy to drink and the bottle will disappear before knowing it has happened. Fresh, clean, crisp and simple. So smart. Drink 2021-2023. The 2011 planted vineyard is the youngest at La Mannella and is used exclusively for Tommaso Cortonesi's Rosso. "In recent years, for my generation we are trying to approach Rosso di Montalcino is a more personal way," tells Cortonesi. "A fresh wind, brought to the production and (especially) the communication. Finding a real identity, not as a baby Brunello." The clay soil does not necessarily give big concentration but more so ease, elegance and classic sangiovese. Seemingly dark in hue but bright and tart in such an accentuated way. The Cortonesi 2015 Brunello di Montalcino La Mannella comes from a vineyard site located not too far from Montosoli, at the foot of the hill where the town of Montalcino stands tall. The soils at this site see a mix of clay and flysch. It offers slightly contained aromas at first that open to reveal dark berry fruit, rose petal and crushed stone. This wine remains direct and accessible with a medium-weight approach backed by fine and structured tannins. Some 25,000 bottles were made, and this Brunello hit the market in January 2020.

Like the same vintage Rosso the Brunello is showing with perked up freshness and almost no development. Slavonian oak and just the right amount of time has elevated the game and brought all the parts into line. There’s fresh porcini in this moment so no matter that Tommaso found none on a quick forage today. Good earth and crunch from in depth older vines construction and very impressive length. Fine quality for 2014 from a producer to look for when adversity tests your mettle. Last tasted October 2019.

Bright raspberries and red cherries on the nose, colored with notes of roses, ripe watermelon and dry soil. Medium-bodied with lightly firm tannins and lots of immediacy on the palate. This is hyper-tense and brimming with exciting, youthful energy. Super length already. Exuberant and exciting to taste now, and you might well be tempted. But this is a classy Cannubi for the cellar. Best from 2024 or 2025.

Novello. A vineyard with a coolish microclimate. It is on the crest of the hill and with an east-south-east exposure, so it is less hit by the sun.
Healthy looking, just mid ruby. Perfumed, sweet cherry fruit nose with a hint of mace. Supple, juicy fruit that is still a bit closed, and with fresh acidity and long, sandy tannins. Sets on elegance rather than power or concentration. Great length and with a long, tannic impact. (WS)

This to me is a classic Barolo vintage captured with utmost care and respect by Réva. The 2018 Baroli are not likely going to amalgamate as the most obviously decadent or structured nebbioli but they can be timely reflections into the appellation. This is what the team at Réva has looked at, considered and coaxed from a wine that represents and by that I mean stands as a cross-sectional cuvée for their important set of vineyards. The 2016 Barolo is a great wine though its austerity means it’s still not functionally available and will serve a select few when it gets to the intended destination. In 2018 nebbiolo stands out bright, aromatic and clear, seasoned by wood, earth and herbs, linear, direct and transparent. The purity and functionality serve the people and does so with heart open wide, worn on a gifted, but never gilded sleeve. This is not a precious wine but do embrace the gift. Drink 2023-2031. Tasted May 2022.

The single vineyard cru Lazazarito is added in 2016 and it is Daniele Gaia’s first harvest at Réva. Drive the best car and drive it right away. “This is the best wine Réva has never made, “ says Gaia with great irony and humility. Tasted from low temperatures (22-24 degrees) in tank there was fear of Lazzrito’s tannins. Here above Sewrralunga a long strip on the top of the eastern side of the hill gives a marl-calcaire meets sandy soikl and so the best of both structural worlds; freshness (also from high pH) and grip. Yes it’s silly young and impressionable but already handsome, unadorned and fruit so crunchy, yet also sapid, a pinch salty and the impression of acidity is a freshness with thanks to that elevated pH. A sample but already in bottle and will be released in two years. Drink 2024-2036. Tasted January 2020.

This is quite a potent Barolo riserva, offering plenty of ripe berries and lightly polished oak on the nose. Full-bodied with lightly grainy, largely oak tannins and a long finish. Undoubtedly well made and intact and will appeal to those who like their nebbiolo well oaked. Drink or hold.

The Borio family has lived in the Costigliole hills since the 12th century. Mariuccia began making quintessential Barberas like this one in 1970 on her 30 hectares of vineyards. Floral, crunchy, fresh-tasting and engaging; juicy with focused fruit.

A Lovely, crunchy barbera in modern packaging. In addition to crunch, the palate is substantial and the long oak ageing is deliciously integrated. Offering very good structure and finesse with an unmanipulated feel. Named after great-aunt "Litina" whose dowry brought the vineyard to the family. Very good length. Tasted August 2020.

Sister wine Passum by Costigiole d'Asti's Cascina Castlet is a thick varietal stew with lightning bolts of acidity and grippy structure. Such a big wine of larger than life personality with white peppery piques and properly spiced, mild dark chocolate bitterness. Will age without trepidation or any true concern. Litina repeats the mantra albeit with more depth and also more barrel concern. A stronger and more ambitious barbera than its sibling with increased bones, karst and structure. Drink 2021-2026. Tasted August 2020.

This is a pretty and serious barbera. Not highly lifted and aromatic but authentic with raspberry/currant fruit, barbera's charcuterie note and some herbality. It is medium-full bodied, fairly dense with firm acidity, alcohol warmth and tannin. Nice sense of proportion here. Fairly tannic and the length is excellent. Give it two years. Tasted August 2020.

Juicy, lively, vibrant but dense and concentrated barbera here, with typically light and supple tannins, fresh acids, and plenty of ripe black cherry fruit on the palate. Length and depth are very good. Solid wine. Tasted August 2020.

Aromas of flint, tobacco, tar and carob mingle with whiffs of dried rose, cherry marinated in spirits and camphor in this full-bodied red. The smooth, delicious palate delivers crushed raspberry, blackberry, grilled herb, cinnamon and sandalwood alongside polished tannins. With delicious fruit and weightless elegance, the alcohol content is barely noticeable.

An effortlessly drinkable red, dynamic and complex with a wealth of botanical elements featured on the nose and palate. Spicy and indicative nerello mascalese grown in volcanic terroir. Notes of red and black cherry, rosebud, laurel, black pepper, ginger, juniper and orange zest. Compelling, complex and with great length. Ready-to-drink. Recommended. Tasted March 2021.
