4.5 Stars (91/100)
Remarkably generous & forthcoming at modest 12.5% alcohol, 2024 layered stonefruit & sweet citrus swathed in rich, creamy lees. Hints vanilla & nutmeg, nicely integrated, attest to 9 months in seasoned barrels.

Good Stellenbsoch season, of that there can be no doubt and surely less complaints, especially as it goes for chenin blanc. By count this is the eighth take on the variety by winemaker Jacques de Klerk for the négoce duo of Nicholas Pearce and Will Predhomme, always wild, always alive and never boring. This hums that familiar tune and reminds us all how chenin and Stellenbosch are so intrinsically connected so that a winemaker need only pay attention to timing and details for the wine to make itself. Feels so natural, in synch and on time. Drink 2024-2027. Tasted April 2024.

These are collaborations with Canadian sommeliers. Supple & juicy, 2023 67% wholebunch carbonic maceration cinsault, shows varietyβs fragrance & charm; conventional ferment syrah, supplies heft. Tannins rounded 9 months in older oak.

Über clean C-S joint this time around from the Pearce-Predhomme duo by way of Radford Dale in Stellenbosch and the winemaking acumen of Jacques de Klerk. No lack for aromatic volume and syrah adds palate density to otherwise light and transparent Western Cape cinsault. Good showing from 2022, missing some of the natural and volatile swarthiness of previous vintages so look at this as something gained over something lost. Those who wish for crisp, crunchy and as mentioned, very clean will get on board this time. Drink 2024-2027. Tasted April 2024.

Azienda Agricola Jasci

Located on the hills that rise 250 meters above sea level from the Adriatic Sea just above the seaside resort town of Vasto in Abruzzo, here the Jasci family has been growing grapes and producing wine for three generations. Starting In the early 1960s, Pasquale and Maria turned the focus of their farm to producing estate wines.
In 1980, their son Giuseppe decided to convert the farm to organic, becoming one of the first ten wineries in all of Italy to be certified. Today led by grandson Donatello Jasci and his wife Piera, the family is the second largest single grower in all of the region. Donatelloβs approach in the cellar is consistent with his farming: clean and simple. The wines see little or no oak and have a purity of flavor that is rare at the price. In addition to his duties at the winery, Donatello Jasci has served as President of the local Organic Growersβ Consortium.
Domaine Andre Aubert

At the very heart of the RhΓ΄ne Valley, at the northerly tip of the Southern RhΓ΄ne, lie the vineyards of Grignan-Les-AdhΓ©mar. The chances are you havenβt heard the name before, few people have, but the wines are worth seeking out. Itβs not a new wine region β vines have been planted here since around 500BC but it is a new name (formerly known as CΓ΄teaux-du-Tricastin). Domaine AndrΓ© Aubert, has been formed over decades and today comprises of more than 280 hectares spread from north to south of the prestigious Southern Rhone Valley on the appellations CΓ΄tes du RhΓ΄ne, CΓ΄tes du RhΓ΄ne villages, Visan, and Grignan-les-AdhΓ©mar.

Villa Calcinaiaβs philosophy marries heritage with thoughtful innovation. Vineyard work is guided by sustainable practices and careful parcel selection, and the estateβs wines are certified organic, reflecting a long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and the health of the land. In the cellar, the approach favors gentle extraction and patient aging to preserve purity of fruit and nuance of site. The result is a portfolio that captures the soul of Chianti Classicoβfrom vibrant, expressive bottlings to refined Riservas and Gran Selezione wines that reward time in the cellar.

Skilfully blending Syrah, 15% Cinsault, 8% Tinta Barocca and 2% Grenache, it's a Swartland take on a Mediterranean blend, all violet and fynbos aromas, appealing 40% whole bunch spices and a core of stony blackberry and red cherry fruit. Radford Dale

Radford Dale and The Winery of Good Hope are two brands made by the same people, in the same winery. The team behind these wineries has been an industry leader since the 1990s in chemical free farming, and more recently in low and no sulfur winemaking. They are a founding member of PIWOSA (Premium Independent Wineries of South Africa) which sets ethical, environmental and social uplift standards. Recognizing the social inequality present in South Africa Radford Dale has also set up a trust called Land of Hope to help facilitate bright futures for children, focusing heavily on education.
Alex Dale who owns and manages both projects is an Englishman who grew up spending summers in Burgundy, France. He moved there in his late teens to follow a passion for winemaking and also opened a wine bar in Beaune. He lived in Burgundy for many years before moving to South Africa in 1998, starting Radford Dale with Ben Radford, an Australian. The idea was to produce wines using modern techniques and technology with a healthy respect for tradition, something Alex came to understand well while living in Burgundy.
Wines are made with minimal intervention in order to best express each vineyardβs individuality.

Grapes from the same Lynedoch vineyard planted in 1969 that supplies Radford Dale's top-end Renaissance bottling. 40% matured in foudre, the rest in a combination of 228-, 300- and 500-litre barrels. Citrus, peach and just the right amount of leesy, waxy complexity on the nose. Great fruit concentration, punchy acidity and pithy, slightly bitter finish. Old-vine Chenin treated with the lightest of hands to great effect

From the outset, the estate has been driven by a singular mission: to express the Capeβs most distinctive old vineyards and soils through minimal intervention and profound respect for nature.
Working with some of the oldest bush vines in the Swartland and surrounding coastal regions, Sadie Family Wines focuses on dry-farmed parcels rooted in granite, schist, sandstone, and iron-rich soils. These venerable vineyardsβmany planted decades agoβform the foundation of wines that are layered, textural, and deeply reflective of place.

This steely, mineral chenin is somewhat restrained, showing aromas of lemon rind, crushed rocks, thyme and pears, but itβs compact, full of tension and concentrated on the palate, with a medium to full body and racy acidity. I love the sharpness and minerality. This will age. The third edition of this wine. Chenin blanc from a historic vineyard with rocky soils. Try after 2026.

The 2024 Rotsbank comes from Chenin planted at the back of the property, according to Sadie, the only one of twelve vineyards he works with that obtains a flintiness. This has fine lift on the nose with light petrolly, almost Riesling-like scents that evolve into more wet wool/lanolin scents with aeration. Fine delineation. The palate is very well balanced with a keen thread of acidity. Bright & sapid in the mouth, it gains weight and a little texture towards the extended finish. Excellent.

The 2024 Treinspoor is pure Tinta Barocca that Sadie says he loves the most, though he had to drop a lot of fruit in this vintage due to the dryness, around 35%. For the first time, the Palladius includes 20% of fruit from limestone soils on the west coast, which Sadie feels made the wine leaner and more minerally.
