Sister's Run

Sister’s Run is serious fun. Their talented young winemaker Elena wears steel cap work boots every day of course, but carries a pair of high heels in back of the ute, only for emergencies, like last minute invitations to accept trophies at gala wine show dinners and the like.
Returning from a ‘knees-up’ at midnight, mid vintage, she managed to kick off one high heel and slip back into a boot’ just as the cellar crew cried out, ‘Run Sister Run’; and exactly then their winemaker and label took flight!
The stiletto and boot are Sister’s Run; an independently owned and operated winery with a fierce commitment to making the best wines they can from family vineyards. They don’t take ourselves as seriously as we take our wines, but agree with Elena, all you need to know about wine is the five ‘V’s and remember the best wine is the wine you like.

Opulent and gorgeously complex, the perfumed bouquet shows dark fruit richness, cake spice, toasty oak and dark chocolate characters, leading to a concentrated palate offering excellent depth and plush texture. Tannins are polished and beautifully infused, making it velvety and deliciously appealing. At its best: now to 2037.

It's gorgeously fruited and inviting on the nose showing black/blueberry, rich floral and cedary oak characters with a hint of dried herb complexity. The palate is superbly concentrated and weighted, offering plush texture backed by fine-grained tannins, finishing impressively long and satisfying. Wonderfully composed and styled, offering terrific drinking. At its best: 2038.

That “reserve” word – too often overused – is, for once, well justified here. With Cabernet, 78%, in the lead and its close amigo, Shiraz, coming in at 22%, the two great friends of Australian wine set about seducing the drinker. Striking herbals, black berries, briar, acacia, jalapeño aromas run wild. As a four-year-old, it’s already revealing the emergence of a complex, arresting personality, one that screams age-worthiness. For the moment, there is a lovely mouth-fulling quality with an equally impressive tannin drive and presence. The flavours expand on from the bouquet, bringing added nuance to intense black-hearted fruits in black pepper, vanilla pod, nutmeg and baking spices with a dusty earthiness that drives deep into the wine. Has power and presence, not to mention a mighty moreish drinkability.

This wine is always a selection of the very best parcels of both Cabernet and Shiraz from the estate. It is aged in French oak barrels, all new, for fourteen months before bottling. The wine is then given another two years in bottle before it is released. The blend is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Shiraz. It is under cork but they do guarantee that there is no possibility of taint (anyone who immediately thought of selling the team a bridge should be ashamed of themselves). The colour is an almost blue/purple. A most evocative nose with chocolate, tomato bush notes, tobacco leaves, coffee beans, licorice and graphite. There is good complexity throughout and, as we move to the palate, we see the emergence of stronger notes of blackberries, mocha and cocoa powder. The wine has silky tannins, very good intensity and serious length. It is a ten to fifteen year proposition, probably longer. A beautiful wine.

Inky hued, this is a densely packed Cab with concentrated black and red berry fruit, licorice, cedar and winter warming spice behind. It's as rich and mouth-filling on the palate as the colour and aromas suggest, but with a lovely lift of tangy acidity to balance chiseled, powerful tannins. Best Buy.
