Founded by visionary winemaker Eben Sadie, Sadie Family Wines is a leading South African estate built on the philosophy that winemaking begins with responsible agriculture and a deep relationship with the land. Based in the Swartland, the domaine is committed to farming practices that prioritize long-term environmental stewardship, sustainability, and respect for terroir.
The estate farms approximately 51 hectares, including 24 hectares of its own vineyards alongside additional parcels cultivated by the Sadie team. Yields are intentionally kept low to ensure concentration and quality. Guided by the belief that great wine emerges from a close relationship between soil, climate, vines, and people, Sadie Family Wines has earned international recognition for producing expressive, terroir-driven wines that capture the character of South Africa’s vineyards while maintaining a strong commitment to responsible farming and environmental stewardship.
Skerpioen (Scorpion) hails from a distinctive site between Dwarskersbos and Elands Bay on the West Coast. The vineyard’s chalky limestone soils, proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, and low annual rainfall of around 300 mm create a cool, dry environment, while intense south-easterly winds shape the old vines, leaving them gnarled and weathered over time.
The 2024 vintage offers vibrant peach and citrus flavours with subtle tropical notes, evolving into the vineyard’s signature salty-brine character. With slightly lower acidity than usual, the aromatics suggest the wine is approachable earlier, making it one of the earliest-ready whites in the range.
