As at many family domaines with deep roots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, vigneron Alexandre Favier was by his own account “raised in the vineyards”: Alexandre’s grandfather, Noël Sabon, is from one of the best known winemaking families in the region. Alexandre himself began his viticultural studies in Orange at the age of fifteen and passed the exams four years later in 2001. A year later (at age twenty!) he took over winemaking duties at the domaine when his father experienced health problems. Today, Domaine Chante Cigale is one of the most important family estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Full on, all in vintage for Châteauneuf Du Pape and this iteration by Domaine Chante Cigale is a seriously tannic in structured affair. Massive fruit, generous but just restrained enough alcohol (15 percent declared) and a chalkiness imagined as Galet stones crushed and mixed with berries in the glass. The distinction of place and appellation are truly captured at a high level, as it must to duly represent today’s climatic circumstance. Drink 2025-2033. Tasted June 2023.

A fresh and lifted, perfumed example of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, offering plenty of red fruit flavours off the top, pomegranate and raspberry, strawberry purée and other grenache-inspired character (representing 2/3rds of the blend along with syrah, mourvèdre and cinsault in order of importance). The palate is nonetheless quite dense and thick and concentrated, with chewy tannins and warming, 15% alcohol declared. It's still a long way from prime, another 2-5 years I'd suggest, but should make for a remarkable wine in time. Tasted June 2023.

This a bit reserved at the moment but captures the lovely, satiny texture and richness of Chateauneuf very nicely. Expect effortlessly integrated and complex aromas of plum/strawberry jam, very fine pepper, dried herbs and spices. It is full bodied, very smooth and almost creamy, with very fine tannin. The length is excellent. Best 2025 to 2030+
