When Helmut Becker spearheaded the Becker Project in 1977, an ambitious initiative that introduced over 30 different grape varieties to the Okanagan Valley, he demonstrated that European reds could not only endure but flourish in this region. In 1993, Harry McWatters identified the potential of Becker Vineyard for cultivating late-ripening Bordeaux grape varieties. Within that year, the inaugural planting of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc vines commenced in the southern Okanagan region. Subsequently, Syrah was also incorporated into the vineyard's cultivation. Fueled by a deep passion for Bordeaux-style wine, Phantom Creek's founder, Richter Bai, acquired both the renowned Becker Vineyard and Phantom Creek Vineyard, thus laying the cornerstone for the remarkable legacy of Phantom Creek Estates.
