Casa Los Frailes is named after the Jesuit Friar Order, who resided in the house from the 16th to the 18th century. They crafted wine using traditional methods, utilizing large clay amphoras and concrete tanks. The winery, which has been under continuous family ownership since 1771, now boasts a 162-acre organic/biodynamic estate with a distinctive terroir. Situated at a high altitude of 650-700 meters above sea level, the vineyards adhere to strict dry farming practices. With vines aged over 80 years, the estate's soil is notably calcareous, influenced by the nearby Mediterranean Sea. Through their commitment to honouring their origins and maintaining a deep reverence for nature, Los Frailes produces genuine and unadulterated wines that encapsulate a profound heritage and bond with the land the family has called home for centuries.

The second indigenous grape variety of Els Alforins Valley, after Monastrell, is Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet). The focus of this wine was to explore the maritime character of the grape, seeking soils that preserve its freshness and acidity. To preserve its unique character, the winemaking process mirrored the traditional methods used by the Friars at the estate.

This exclusive vineyard offering reveals luxuriant aromas, showcasing dried fruits alongside spiced plums and blueberries. Its palate is robust and tantalizing, delivering luscious flavours and refined tannins leading to a delectable finish highlighted by black and blue fruits, complemented by a subtle touch of crushed stone minerality.

Thanks to its depth of flavour, this wine will be a great match for hearty dishes like beef stew, lamb tagine, or cassoulet.

About the Winery

Casa Los Frailes

Casa Los Frailes is located in the valley called “land of Alforins”, south west inland province of Valencia, with average altitude of 650-700 meters above sea level. The valley is located between two mountains range, on the east the Mediterranean Sea (50km) and on the west the main “plateau” of La Mancha. Casa Los Frailes (“Cals Frares” in old valencian local language) takes their name from the Jesuit Friars that used to live in the Estate over two centuries (XVII to XVIII). The Casa Los Frailes estate now belongs to the Velázquez family and has for over 250 years, today the 13th generation runs the winery.

Frontrunners in organic agriculture and biodynamics, the estate consists of 162 hectare with vineyards, Mediterranean forest, almond and olive trees and a unique terroir. The main variety was (and still is) the Monastrell, cultivated in bush vines. "As inheritors of such legacy, we believe our wines should be part and transmit the history of our estate, as this history is obviously unique. In today's interconnected world, wines are more and more uniform, but we are committed to elaborate authentic and different wines, loyal to our personality and our history."

91 Points

Aromas of spiced plums and blueberries with notes of spices, dried herbs and crushed stones. Medium-to full-bodied and dry, with chewy tannins and a firm texture. Flavorful finish with notes of blue fruit and a touch of minerality. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

Wine Advocate

91 Points - Luis Gutiérrez

The nose of the old-vine Garnacha Tintorera 2020 Rubificado is redolent of dry figs and dates, denoting high ripeness despite having the same alcohol (14.5%) as the rest of soils' bottlings (Caliza and Dolomitas). It's a heady and spicy, juicy, glossy and ripe Mediterranean red with abundant, fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins. This fermented with 50% full clusters and matured in concrete vats and two 700-liter oak barrels for 12 months
