Aromatic & Spicy

Matthias Hager's winery has about 13ha of vineyards in and around the small wine-growing village of Mollands. All of his vineyards are cultivated biodynamically according to Demeter. The strength of this family business is its diversity. Loess, clay and different kinds of primary rock (mica shist, gneiss, etc.) can be found in the northern part of Kamptal.

The vines grows on the Mollandser site called Steinleithen. The soil there is very stony (Gneiss) which gives the wine its mineral quality. The vineyard is 40 years old and located in the southern part of Mollands with a beautiful view to Schoenberg – the next village in the valley of Kamptal – about 340m above sea level. This Gruner is skin fermented and aged in used oak barrels. It is an aromatic version of the varietal with sun ripe citrus, white pepper, stone and that classic Grüner minerality. Perfection!

Due to its complexity and intense aromas, it is well suited to hearty home cooking (schnitzel, roast pork, ...) as well as to vegetarian dishes such as couscous with vegetables.

This product is currently available in select LCBO retail stores as part of the Destination Collection program.

About the Winery

Matthias Hager

The Hager Matthias winery is located in the small village of Mollands in the Kamptal area of Lower Austria. Matthias took over the 12-hectare land and the family business at an early age. He aims to produce the best quality wine possible and to focus on being in balance with nature. The lands are cultivated according to biodynamic principles and are certified Demeter. Matthias has a vast knowledge about plants and insects, and about keeping the flora and fauna in harmony with the vines. Matthias Hager is one of the most experimental winemakers in the Kamptal region, Austria. He understood early how to work with different soil types from loess to clay. He established different product lines to highlight these differences: the blue one representing fresh, lively wines including Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc; and the brown line gravitating towards more earthy, flavourful produce and the red line stands for no sulphites!

90 points - Michael Godel

Tasted side by side with the estate’s Alte Reben Ried Steinleiten Riesling Reserve and could not more different, for obvious reasons and also those less so. They being texture and aerosol mainly, with orange spray, all the citrus otherwise and more mineral than one could dig up from tract of Urgestein soil. Quite classic in many respects, very textured like a salve dissolving on the palate and such grippy, grape tannin and salted finish. Drink 2021-2024. Tasted November 2021.
