Founded by visionary winemaker Eben Sadie, Sadie Family Wines is a leading South African estate built on the philosophy that winemaking begins with responsible agriculture and a deep relationship with the land. Based in the Swartland, the domaine is committed to farming practices that prioritize long-term environmental stewardship, sustainability, and respect for terroir.

The estate farms approximately 51 hectares, including 24 hectares of its own vineyards alongside additional parcels cultivated by the Sadie team. Yields are intentionally kept low to ensure concentration and quality. Guided by the belief that great wine emerges from a close relationship between soil, climate, vines, and people, Sadie Family Wines has earned international recognition for producing expressive, terroir-driven wines that capture the character of South Africa’s vineyards while maintaining a strong commitment to responsible farming and environmental stewardship.

Nestled alongside an old railway line that gives it its name, the Treinspoor Vineyard is planted with old bush vines of Tinta Barocca (locally Tinta das Baroccas). The low-trained vines form a natural canopy, shielding the delicate bunches from the intense Swartland sun. Deeply rooted in the region, this variety is celebrated for its remarkable ability to express the soil and convey a true sense of terroir.

The 2024 vintage opens with darker notes of graphite and dried fig, evolving into lifted aromas of violets, floral perfume, and pencil lead. The palate is structured and powerful, with dense, multi-layered tannins and a firm, persistent finish. Deeply concentrated and tightly knit, the wine carries impressive intensity and length, and will benefit from patient cellaring to reveal its full complexity.

Sadie Family Wines

Founded by visionary winemaker Eben Sadie, Sadie Family Wines is widely regarded as a benchmark producer of South Africa’s Swartland region. From the outset, the estate has been driven by a singular mission: to express the Cape’s most distinctive old vineyards and soils through minimal intervention and profound respect for nature.

Working with some of the oldest bush vines in the Swartland and surrounding coastal regions, Sadie Family Wines focuses on dry-farmed parcels rooted in granite, schist, sandstone, and iron-rich soils. These venerable vineyards—many planted decades ago—form the foundation of wines that are layered, textural, and deeply reflective of place.

Farming is organic in practice, guided by biodiversity and soil health, while cellar work is intentionally restrained. Native fermentations, gentle handling, and patient élevage allow each site to speak clearly, without artifice. The philosophy is simple: great wine begins in great vineyards.

The portfolio spans both the celebrated Old Vine Series and signature blends, each bottling telling the story of a specific site, soil, and vine age. The wines are known for their purity, structure, and remarkable aging potential, earning Sadie Family Wines international acclaim as a standard-bearer for modern South African fine wine.

At its heart, Sadie Family Wines is a study in authenticity—where heritage vineyards, thoughtful farming, and quiet winemaking converge to articulate the true voice of the Swartland.

Press Reviews

James Suckling

96 Points - Claire Nesbitt, Deputy Tasting Editor

This spicy, brooding yet pure wine has aromas of licorice, violets, blackberries, cranberries, graphite and hints of fennel. It’s medium- to full-bodied, firm and focused, with fantastic spicy undertones. Lots of structure. Tight and firm finish. Tinta barroca from 50-year-old vines. Try after 2026.

Vinous Media

94 Points - Neal Martin

The 2024 Treinspoor is pure Tinta Barocca that Sadie says he loves the most, though he had to drop a lot of fruit in this vintage due to the dryness, around 35%. This blooms on the nose with sensual red berry fruit, rooibos, Early Grey, and light mineral scents, beautifully defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy opening, impressive density and weight, very pure and perhaps the most sensual of Sadie's OVS this vintage. Just a light tang of cracked black pepper on the finish. Excellent.
