Sadie Family Wines

Founded by visionary winemaker Eben Sadie, Sadie Family Wines is widely regarded as a benchmark producer of South Africa’s Swartland region. From the outset, the estate has been driven by a singular mission: to express the Cape’s most distinctive old vineyards and soils through minimal intervention and profound respect for nature.
Working with some of the oldest bush vines in the Swartland and surrounding coastal regions, Sadie Family Wines focuses on dry-farmed parcels rooted in granite, schist, sandstone, and iron-rich soils. These venerable vineyards—many planted decades ago—form the foundation of wines that are layered, textural, and deeply reflective of place.
Farming is organic in practice, guided by biodiversity and soil health, while cellar work is intentionally restrained. Native fermentations, gentle handling, and patient élevage allow each site to speak clearly, without artifice. The philosophy is simple: great wine begins in great vineyards.
The portfolio spans both the celebrated Old Vine Series and signature blends, each bottling telling the story of a specific site, soil, and vine age. The wines are known for their purity, structure, and remarkable aging potential, earning Sadie Family Wines international acclaim as a standard-bearer for modern South African fine wine.
At its heart, Sadie Family Wines is a study in authenticity—where heritage vineyards, thoughtful farming, and quiet winemaking converge to articulate the true voice of the Swartland.

This intriguing, aromatic red has aromas of smoked paprika, black currants, bell peppers, licorice, rosemary and Sichuan peppercorns. Some prickly pear, too. It’s vibrant, exotic and crunchy, medium- to full-bodied, with tight and fine tannins. Wild, spicy and powerful, but refined. A field blend of 12 co-planted varietals from a vineyard planted in 2019. The first bottling of this forward-looking wine. Drink or hold.

The maiden 2024 Sonvang, a field blend of varieties in Eben Sadie's nursery, certainly has one of the more exotic and out-there aromatics with scents of red fruit, hickory, struck flint...something almost volcanic about this. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant dark berry fruit, touches of white pepper, Provençal herbs and black truffle. Wonderfully balanced, granular in texture, with instant grip on the persistent finish. This is an outstanding debut.
