Founded by visionary winemaker Eben Sadie, Sadie Family Wines is a leading South African estate built on the philosophy that winemaking begins with responsible agriculture and a deep relationship with the land. Based in the Swartland, the domaine is committed to farming practices that prioritize long-term environmental stewardship, sustainability, and respect for terroir.

The estate farms approximately 51 hectares, including 24 hectares of its own vineyards alongside additional parcels cultivated by the Sadie team. Yields are intentionally kept low to ensure concentration and quality. Guided by the belief that great wine emerges from a close relationship between soil, climate, vines, and people, Sadie Family Wines has earned international recognition for producing expressive, terroir-driven wines that capture the character of South Africa’s vineyards while maintaining a strong commitment to responsible farming and environmental stewardship.

Grown from an extensively restored vineyard site, Soldaat Grenache expresses the character of its terroir with striking transparency, carrying pure fruit and subtle earthy undertones from fermentation through to bottle.

The 2024 vintage captures this clarity with remarkable purity, offering aromas of red cherry, unripe strawberry, and pomegranate, lifted by delicate hints of rose petal and floral perfume. The palate is refined and elegant, balancing softer tannins with a sweet, grippy, powdery structure and a long, poised finish. With its vibrant red fruit and underlying earthiness, the wine is built to gain complexity over time and will reward patient cellaring for 5–8 years.

About the Winery

A to Z Wineworks

A to Z Wineworks was started in 2002 by Oregon wine industry veterans: Deb Hatcher (Eyrie), Bill Hatcher (Domaine Drouhin Oregon), Sam Tannahill (Archery Summit) and Cheryl Francis (Chehalem). Recognition has mounted for A to Z wines as offering dependable quality for great value and this continues today making A to Z the top-selling Oregon wine brand. A to Z Oregon Pinot Noir has twice been named to Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines of the year. In May 2014, A to Z Wineworks certified as a B Corp subsequently being named as a 'Best for the World B Corp' five years in a row.

Sadie Family Wines

Founded by visionary winemaker Eben Sadie, Sadie Family Wines is widely regarded as a benchmark producer of South Africa’s Swartland region. From the outset, the estate has been driven by a singular mission: to express the Cape’s most distinctive old vineyards and soils through minimal intervention and profound respect for nature.

Working with some of the oldest bush vines in the Swartland and surrounding coastal regions, Sadie Family Wines focuses on dry-farmed parcels rooted in granite, schist, sandstone, and iron-rich soils. These venerable vineyards—many planted decades ago—form the foundation of wines that are layered, textural, and deeply reflective of place.

Farming is organic in practice, guided by biodiversity and soil health, while cellar work is intentionally restrained. Native fermentations, gentle handling, and patient élevage allow each site to speak clearly, without artifice. The philosophy is simple: great wine begins in great vineyards.

The portfolio spans both the celebrated Old Vine Series and signature blends, each bottling telling the story of a specific site, soil, and vine age. The wines are known for their purity, structure, and remarkable aging potential, earning Sadie Family Wines international acclaim as a standard-bearer for modern South African fine wine.

At its heart, Sadie Family Wines is a study in authenticity—where heritage vineyards, thoughtful farming, and quiet winemaking converge to articulate the true voice of the Swartland.

Press Reviews

James Suckling

97 Points - Claire Nesbitt, Deputy Tasting Editor

Sliced strawberries, pomegranates, rose hips, orange rind and wet stones on the nose of this supremely elegant, fragrant red. Sour cherries, too. It’s medium-bodied, very fresh and silky, with very fine tannins, seamless but present. Persistent and salty at the end. Great expression of grenache. Fermented and aged in concrete. Drink or hold.

Vinous Media

92 Points - Neal Martin

The 2024 Soldaat is Sadie's Grenache cuvée with slightly higher alcohol compared to previous vintages, fermented and aged in concrete. That age across the nose, which is more generous, a little higher toned than the '23. Plush red berries and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a tart entry, red cherries, pomegranate and crushed strawberry with gentle grip on the finish. a lovely Soldaat that will give 12 to 15 years' drinking pleasure.
