Sadie Family Wines

Founded by visionary winemaker Eben Sadie, Sadie Family Wines is widely regarded as a benchmark producer of South Africa’s Swartland region. From the outset, the estate has been driven by a singular mission: to express the Cape’s most distinctive old vineyards and soils through minimal intervention and profound respect for nature.
Working with some of the oldest bush vines in the Swartland and surrounding coastal regions, Sadie Family Wines focuses on dry-farmed parcels rooted in granite, schist, sandstone, and iron-rich soils. These venerable vineyards—many planted decades ago—form the foundation of wines that are layered, textural, and deeply reflective of place.
Farming is organic in practice, guided by biodiversity and soil health, while cellar work is intentionally restrained. Native fermentations, gentle handling, and patient élevage allow each site to speak clearly, without artifice. The philosophy is simple: great wine begins in great vineyards.
The portfolio spans both the celebrated Old Vine Series and signature blends, each bottling telling the story of a specific site, soil, and vine age. The wines are known for their purity, structure, and remarkable aging potential, earning Sadie Family Wines international acclaim as a standard-bearer for modern South African fine wine.
At its heart, Sadie Family Wines is a study in authenticity—where heritage vineyards, thoughtful farming, and quiet winemaking converge to articulate the true voice of the Swartland.

Black cherries, fresh plums, sandalwood, peach pits, sage and cloves on the nose of this deliciously polished and complex red. It’s medium- to full-bodied, intense yet full of finesse and elegance, with firm and very fine-grained tannins. Long, continuous and delicious, with a beautiful interplay of fruit and spice. I love this wine. Syrah, mourvedre, grenache, carignan, cinsault, tinta barocca and pinotage. Drinkable already but better after a couple of years.

The Columella is the usual blend of seven varieties. It has quite an intense bouquet, with a mixture of red and black fruit, cigar box, potpourri and a light sea influence. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine-grained tannins, gentle grip, beautifully balanced, with a long and tender finish. Just wonderful transparency to this Columella that will give many years of drinking pleasure. Snapping at the heels of the best Sadie has made.
