A breakout star in the Etna DOC of Sicily, Tornatore has become one of the region's largest and most respected wineries. Established back in 1865, the estate continues to be run by the same family who have acted as the faithful custodians of the land for generations. Tending to high altitude vineyards on the north side of the active volcano, the conditions are ideal for indigenous grape varieties to thrive. The wines are distinctive bottlings which encapsulate the essence of Mount Etna and effortlessly reveal the unique characteristics that make the region one to watch.

Etna Rosso is the signature style red of the area, made from local Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes. Bright ruby in the glass revealing aromas of red berries and morello cherries overlayed with sweet and savoury spices. Tannins glide over the deceptively weighted palate and interweave with brightly supported fruit notes of wild strawberries and delicate florals. Refreshing acidity keeps the fruit from feeling heavy, and rather lends itself to to this elegant and uplifting style.

Etna Rosso is highly food friendly and versatile by nature making it a clever alternative with many food pairings. Tomato sauces are a natural match for this wine; but it also shines alongside roasted meats, sausages, and oily fish like smoked sardines.

About the Winery

Azienda Agricola Tornatore

Out of a Sicilian family heritage that traces back to the 17th century, the Tornatore’s Mount Etna wine ventures began in 1865. Today the family’s operations are headed by Giuseppe Tornatore, a businessman whose expertise led to the acquisition of some of the region’s finest north-facing vineyards in the early 2000’s. That heritage and the Tornatore’s profound respect and understanding of the land is showcased in wines that capture the essence of Etna, deftly balancing concentrated flavors, complexity, freshness and refinement.

The company lies in the northern side of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. The soils have volcanic origin and were created through the disintegration of lava, ash and stones from previous volcanic eruptions. The climate on the northern side of the Etna is characterized by mild temperatures, and more rain fall reflecting the influence of the Volcano. The combination of soil, climate and the skill of the winemakers, have made the northern slope of Etna an ideal area for the production of high-quality wines. “Our vineyards and our winery are only a few kilometers from our family home. Our entire family is rooted there. The 2020 Etna Rosso is remarkably pretty, leading off with dusty roses and dried strawberries complicated by suggestions of violet and lavender. This flows effortlessly across the palate with floral-laced red fruits enhanced by sour citrus and spice. The 2020 lingers incredibly long yet maintains a lovely inner freshness. Exceptionally pure and impossible to resist.
