From a high-density 1956 planting of pinot noir, aged in 20% new wood and the rest in used barrels, this is complex and perfumed Saint Romain, especially spicy and stemmy in a good way, adding an impression of freshness and counter-balancing the ripe red berry fruit. The palate is mid-weight, properly firm and structured, with high sapidity and excellent length, and well-integrated, dusty tannins that still need some time to settle in. In the context of the region, I have to say this is an excellent value red Burgundy. I'd cellar for another 2-3 years minimum before enjoying, or hold until the end of the decade without concern. Great complexity and depth. Tasted May 2022.

This old vine 1er Cru Savigny shows surprisingly deep colour. The nose is lifted, fragrant and floral (lily), with very ripe strawberry/cherry jam, baked plum (actually thought of grenache) barrel spice and toast. It is a mouthful - rich, warm, smooth and refined at the same time. Real power here, with fine tannin balance - almost seamless, and excellent length. Some minerality as well. The length is outstanding. A real mouthful!

Who was Jean Ferté you ask? Monsieur Ferté was in fact the one who persuaded Nicolas Potel's father Gerard to make the move to Bourgogne and the rest as they say is history. Great uncle Ferté led a syndicate that was able to purchase Domaine de la Pousse d’Or in 1964, historically a part of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti until the French Revolution. Two plots totalling 0.77 hectares make up this Savigny Les Beaune with the oldest vines dating back to 1962. A pitchy and grippy pinot here in 2020 with mildly resinous evergreen notes that seem to partially define the vintage, especially from Beaune. Also seems to indicate a healthy level of stem inclusion. Really purple fruit and formidable tannin, a fine if currently demanding dichotomy. Drink 2024-2028.

From vines planted in 1952, harvested quite early, in the first days of September and aged in 25% new wood. The result is, like many 2022s, a ripe and fruity, almost monolithic example - I find it hard to distinguish terroirs in this vintage, though this has a significant degree of flesh and complexity, and in the end, it stands out for its cool limestone character, a sort of stoniness that other wines do not seem to possess, and indeed a strong sense of sapidity, salinity and minerality. Sharp value. Drink 2027-2034.

This is from a vineyard planted in the 1950s. It shows a very pretty nose with classic NSG blackcurrant fruit (as opposed to cherry elsewhere), fresh herbs, a slight meatiness and iodine, and wood spice. It is medium weight, firm, warm and tannic - excellent structure and flavour in-fill. It has the rugged ambiance expected of this famous appellation. Best 2028 to well into the 30s.
