There is iron savoriness and minerality that make this unique, with a Gevry-like grip and a structured profile. It brims with aromas of roasted spices, crushed shells, blood oranges and berries that extend to a tight, almost full-bodied palate supported by very firm tannins. 14 months in 300-liter oak barrels, of which 35% were new. Quite a structured pinot, with 18% whole clusters. 5,970 bottles made. Drink from 2027.

Joie Farm's 2022 pinot noir from the Naramata Bench pours a pale red-garnet colour and presents a delicate array of savoury and sultry red fruit, damp earth and caraway spice, quite evolved at this stage and likely approaching peak if you're looking to enjoy the remaining red cherry, currant and pomegranate flavours. It seems fuller and more dense than the declared 12.7% alcohol would lead one to believe, and the length is quite excellent. A solid wine, and value, for pinotphiles everywhere.

This very youthful and tightly wound Corton is refined, but also has a fascinating dark side. I love the candied orange, dried flower and hot dry earth character that is woven into the deep, beautifully ripe red fruit aromas. Great concentration and a stack of fine tannins on the compact, medium- to full-bodied palate. Very long, powerful licorice and spice finish. Drink or hold.

A very aromatic wine for this commune, with flinty energy accenting the sour cherry and red rose aromas. Still quite firm at the front of the medium-bodied palate, but the compact chalky minerality gives this impressive depth in the focused finish. Excellent aging potential. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

This excellent red Monthelie has a beautiful floral nose that marries excellent depth with a lightness of touch. Beautifully crafted fine tannins on the medium-bodied palate that carry the very long and silky finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

I love the violet aromas of this excellent Pommard village. Then on the compact, medium- to full-bodied palate there’s a wealth of licorice and wet earth alongside the ample black cherry fruit. Gentle tannins in the context of this commune, which is famous for firm wines, the velvet finish pulling you back for more. From two sites, including the part of Rugiens that isn’t 1er Cru. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

This Auixey-Duresses marries considerable intensity with a striking freshness that the moderately dry tannins accentuate. This may be slightly austere, but on the sleek, medium-bodied palate it has the structure to age. From a little-known, almost south-facing site in this commune that’s better known for whites. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

The interplay of earthiness, moderately dry tannins and generous red fruit aromas makes this an authentic modern expression of the appellation. Good savory complexity and a focused, stony finish. From three sites, Les Colombes, Morais and Les Paulands. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

This Savigny-les-Beaune has more delicacy than a lot of wines from what is often considered a blockbuster vintage for red Burgundy. It’s brimming with sour cherries and just beginning to pick up some of the earthy notes of early maturity. Beautiful balance for a non-1er Cru wine from Savigny. A nicely rounded, medium-bodied palate with an almost soft finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

On the nose this prototypical Volnay has all the red fruit character, floral aromas and silky elegance that the world associates with this appellation. I love the way the well-crafted tannins underline this without being a jot too forthright on the surprisingly full-bodied palate. A lovely fresh finish that pulls you back for more. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold

About the Winery
Champagne Fresne Ducret

Fresne-Ducret is rich in family history and has been rooted in the premier cru village of Villedommange since the mid 1800s. Originally growing grapes for the big champagne houses, it wasn’t until the end of the second world war that the family decided to make their own wine. The tradition carries on today with Pierre Fresne and his wife Daniella (an Oakville ex-pat). Their philosophy is to produce wines that best exemplify the terroir of Villedommange, and they do this with sustainability in mind.
In 2014, Pierre Fresne embarked on a new adventure by creating a limited series of champagnes based on his desire for experimentation. Since then, he has produced one or two of these wines each year. Each are unique, according to his wishes and the profile of the vintage. This unique collection is called Arquémie, the term for alchemy in the Middle Ages. In 2018 Pierre began converting the vineyards to organic viticulture, and 2021 will be their first organic certified vintage.

This has a very intriguing, generous nose of macaroon (coconut), straw, dried apple, toast and almond/hazelnut. Also a lovely sense of sweet nut fudge. It is medium bodied with fulsome flavour, riveting acidity and all kinds of Champagne minerality. Great focus and length here. Wow! Tasted October 2020

Fresne Ducret's latest release of this premier cru "Chemin du Chemin champagne is a characteristically smoky and savoury, toasty and biscuity, mature champagne in the English style, balanced and savoury. I really like the developed, mature profile here, the great length. This is very good champagne ready to go. Tasted October 2020.

When richness, yeasty and warm toasted brioche get together in Champagne the effect is comforting and potentially hypnotizing. From the Premier Cru village of Villedommange dating back to the mid 1800s, the pedigree is noted and the 48 months of lees aging a coup for creating both a creamy and a revitalizing Champagne. There is an oxidative aspect here and it's effectualness is one that imagines exotic spice cupboards, masala mixes and gingery tisanes. Quite the exotic bubble, lightly frothy, elegantly styled, complex and fine. Drink 2020-2026. Tasted October 2020.

This Champagne shows some fine maturity. A blend based on the 2014 vintage, it now has toastiness while keeping intense freshness. Acidity and touches of minerality come through the spiciness. Drink now.
