Radford Dale and The Winery of Good Hope are two brands made by the same people, in the same winery. The team behind these wineries has been an industry leader since the 1990s in chemical free farming, and more recently in low and no sulfur winemaking. They are a founding member of PIWOSA (Premium Independent Wineries of South Africa) which sets ethical, environmental and social uplift standards. Recognizing the social inequality present in South Africa Radford Dale has also set up a trust called Land of Hope to help facilitate bright futures for children, focusing heavily on education.Alex Dale who owns and manages both projects is an Englishman who grew up spending summers in Burgundy, France. He moved there in his late teens to follow a passion for winemaking and also opened a wine bar in Beaune. He lived in Burgundy for many years before moving to South Africa in 1998, starting Radford Dale with Ben Radford, an Australian. The idea was to produce wines using modern techniques and technology with a healthy respect for tradition, something Alex came to understand well while living in Burgundy.

Cracker chardonnay here from Dave Paterson and Tantalus, über fresh, crisp and in the cleanest varietal style. Easy and low alcohol (12.8 percent) but don’t be fooled because this packs a punch so in effect taking this lightly would be akin to poking the bear. The magic of conversion rate is the catalyst to effecting balance but be wise, grill a fleshy and fatty piece of fish (salmon, char, etc.) to tame the seasoning and reach chardonnay pairing nirvana. Drink 2023-2026.

Complexity and lots of stamina and verve here! Smoky lemons, nougat, ginger and flint provide a very flavourful palate. Intense and substantial on the palate, but still elegant and nuanced, with a hint of phenolics at the end. Long, focused finish. Think fine Meursault. Drink or hold.

The 2020 Selección de Parcelas Los Primos Chardonnay was cropped from a warm and dry vintage, but in Traiguén in the south, it is not as warm as in the central valley of Chile. The grapes were harvested the first half of April; they harvested earlier and finished with more alcohol, still a moderate 13.5%, from a year of more body and rounder wines but without heat. The wine kept a pH of 3.16 and 6.9 grams of acidity. This also makes the wine a little more Burgundian, more Meursault than Chablis or Puligny, tasty, spicy with a tad more oak (all the new barrels for white are 400-liter ones, 38% of them new in 2020), because in warmer years there is a little more extraction from the oak. This is the warmest vintage so far, but the wine is still bone dry and there is no ripeness; but there's more weight and width. The wines have to show the differences of the climate conditions each year... 4,069 bottles were filled in July 2021.

This is fairly pale, evolving ruby garnet. It has developed a fine, complex and detailed fragrance with pretty cherry fruit, florals, fine spice and subtle leather and earthy notes. It is medium weight with that firm Nuits Saint George core of almost rusty minerality. Lots of tannic grip still in place, with excellent length. Enjoy now with aeration or hold through 2030. This is a typically hefty Cape syrah yet made with polish and flair. The aromatic intensity is very good with a core of black cherry fruit and amid layers of smoke, pepper and dried meat typical of the variety. It is quite full bodied but not heavy, with very well balanced alcohol, acid and slightly crusty tannin. Those smoky/tarry notes roll onto the finish, hitting excellent length. Great BBQ red.

This is an unusual blend of syrah, edgy yet fragrant petit verdot and mourvedre with some viognier to add cush. It has a generous, quite rich and compelling nose of plum/blackberry jam, deep hibiscus florality, gentle clove and peppery spice and vanilla. It is full bodied, broad and hefty with alcohol power and warmth, firm but not austere tannin (thanks to the PV) and MV) and all kinds of spice and garrigue on the finish. Excellent to outstanding length. This is really well designed if on the fringe for some.

Jeanne Marie
The Jeanne Marie label was created by David Gordon, one of New York’s first recognized sommeliers, and the person responsible for the Wine Spectator Grand Award-winning wine list at Manhattan’s famed Tribeca Grill restaurant. The restaurant opened in 1990 by restaurateur Drew Nieporent and actor Robert DeNiro. Gordon, who is self-taught, began learning about wine in the 1980s just as Kevin Zraly was beginning to educate America on the world of wine. At the time, there were very few non-French somms working in the city and the British-born Court of Master Sommeliers was in its infancy.
“You had to pick up a book or magazine to learn about wine,” says Gordon. There were no YouTubes or Google or extensive training programs. The list now boasts over 1800 selections including verticals of some of the most sought-after producers.
While he tasted and learned about the best wines on the planet, which included expensive Burgundies and Rhône wines, Gordon always kept the consumer top of mind. “House” Cab and Chard were big sellers at the restaurant, so he set out to meet that demand with a genuine product that would deliver consistent quality.
“I started the Jeanne Marie line as a fun, cool thing to do,” says Gordon. “There really weren't any wines associated with sommeliers at the time. Now there are many, but these were definitely among the first. I named the wine after the person I worship, my wife of 30+ years- Jeanne Marie."
In the beginning, Gordon sourced the wines from his friends in Napa and Sonoma. Producers such as Caymus, Lewis Cellars, and Miner Family provided grapes and helped with the winemaking for the early cuvées. The first Chardonnay vintage was 1992, released in 1994. Today, all the wines are sourced from top producers who have provided high-quality fruit at a fair price year after year. Gordon has kept to his original promise that wines with the Jeanne Marie label will always be affordable and delicious. “People want ripe fruit and a clean taste that’s not too oaky or tannic,” he says. The wines are refreshing, they can be drunk as an aperitif before dinner or with a meal."
Wines bearing the Jeanne Marie label, much like David Gordon himself, are welcoming and unpretentious.

Champagne Fresne Ducret
Fresne-Ducret is rich in family history and has been rooted in the premier cru village of Villedommange since the mid 1800s. Originally growing grapes for the big champagne houses, it wasn’t until the end of the second world war that the family decided to make their own wine. The tradition carries on today with Pierre Fresne and his wife Daniella (an Oakville ex-pat). Their philosophy is to produce wines that best exemplify the terroir of Villedommange, and they do this with sustainability in mind.
In 2014, Pierre Fresne embarked on a new adventure by creating a limited series of champagnes based on his desire for experimentation. Since then, he has produced one or two of these wines each year. Each are unique, according to his wishes and the profile of the vintage. This unique collection is called Arquémie, the term for alchemy in the Middle Ages. In 2018 Pierre began converting the vineyards to organic viticulture, and 2021 will be their first organic certified vintage.

Hard to believe the age because while this almost certainly achieved an immediately retro toasted and evolved stage in its youth and though 12 years have passed the present day imaginings are dreamed to persist within that very immediate stage. As creamy as it is toasty, the textural body politic in La Grande Hermine is one of great cerebral and figurative impression. You feel, intuit and embrace such honesty and possibility. Drink this vintage dated Champagne all winter long. Its calming presence will preserve you in a state of grace lower than a snowman’s blood pressure. Drink 2020-2028. Tasted September 2020.

The nose shows generous, complex and detailed aromas of ripe peach/pineapple fruit, lemon, vague toast/smoke, pine nuts and some flint. It is medium-full bodied, firm and dry and warm, but not heavy. The finish is very mineral. The length is excellent to outstanding.

Azienda Agricola Tornatore
Out of a Sicilian family heritage that traces back to the 17th century, the Tornatore’s Mount Etna wine ventures began in 1865. Garage Wine Co makes wines from a series of individual parcels, small lots / bottlings of 8-22 barrels that include a series of dry-farmed field-blends of Carignan, Garnacha, Monastrell, País, Cinsault and Cab Franc grown on pre-phylloxera rootstock with small farmers in the Maule and Itata. Each wine is from a 1-2 hectare parcel in a different place.
Over the years working in the community they have raised a veritable posse of vineyard hands whose skills are working the vineyards the old way / the traditional way– originario. The vineyards are on the old coastal range of mountains closer to the Pacific and have granitic soils with cracks for roots to get deep down into.
When GWCo. speaks of the provenance of these wines they mean more than just the geological terroir. Derek and Pilar think the farming practices that have evolved over generations have as much to do with the wines’ personalities as the soils. All the wines are made by hand with native yeasts in small tanks, punched down manually and pressed out in a small basket press. GWCo is still very much a DIY operation and we still tow much of the crop back to the winery in trailers behind trusty pickup trucks 2,000 kilos at a time.

The 2020 Truquilemu Vineyard follows the path of the 2018 and 2019 with even lower alcohol (12.9%) and great freshness and acidity, a pH of 3.36 and 6.4 grams of acidity. The modus operandi was the usual: fermented in open-top vats with indigenous yeasts and manual punch-down with a slow malolactic, which took 10 months to finish, and matured in used barrels over two winters. It contains some 4% Syrah. This has the ethereal quality of this vineyard, powerful but weightless. This place makes fresh wines even in warm vintages like 2020, and you feel that especially in the palate where the wine is vibrant and lively. 5,882 bottles were filled in February 2022.

In the Bellene pantheon Cuvée Réserve takes a half step up from old vines though the plants for this effort are in fact in the 48 year-old range so quite experienced as far as that is concerned. Picked early in the first two weeks of September and though only five per cent new wood is used there is quite a velvet of richness in this wine. Mostly fruit derived in a pulpy to fleshy consort, quite impressive actually and yet acids are no more than of a medium kind. Almost exotic flavours abound, mango and guava come to mind indicating the best years for this wine will be the earliest, beginning straight away. Drink 2023-2025. Tasted January 2023.

Derek and Pilar think the farming practices that have evolved over generations have as much to do with the wines’ personalities as the soils. All the wines are made by hand with native yeasts in small tanks, punched down manually and pressed out in a small basket press. GWCo is still very much a DIY operation and we still tow much of the crop back to the winery in trailers behind trusty pickup trucks 2,000 kilos at a time.

The 2018 país was, and I quote Garage Wine Company founder (and Oakvillean) Derek Mossman Knapp ”A wine that rose from the 2017 bush fires, quickly having ascended out of the ashes as something resurrected and reinvented.” The method is pressing whole clusters with stems and a co-fermented (2018) collection of país, stacked with carinena, one on top of the other. Now in 2021 it’s all about the mission grape, survivor and revivalist, the stacks of fruit like lyrics, on repeat. If you say the mantra often enough it becomes bible and this grape made in this way is the lifeblood and soul of Chile’s Secano Interior Cauquenes. A very instrumental red wine, comfortable, of relaxed warmth and lack of pressure that you would only expect at home, with people you love. “People can you feel it? Born during the pandemic, the Garage Wine Company’s old-vine project is devoted to reviving previously-neglected old vines and supporting local farming communities. Founded by Mossman Knapp and Pilar Miranda, it is based in Maule, home to many dry-farmed, family-owned, old vineyards. Only about 5000 bottles of this old-vine país were made using traditional methods, including traditional dry-farming and hand-harvesting in the vineyards, and manual punchdowns and native yeast in the winery. It is a fresh, light, cheerfully fruity, wine, clean and uncluttered, with a down-to-earth, guileless charm. Red berries and herbs are joined by notes of pepper and wildflowers. The palate is medium-bodied and soft, with fine tannins, tart acids, and very good length.
