Leaning Post
A leaning post is what you find at the beginning of a row of grapes, anchoring the wires that are the frame-work for growing grapevines. It is the beginning of an obsession to translate a time and place into liquid. Leaning Post wines take you to that beginning by finding small, unique plots of land in Niagara and putting them in bottle. Because after stripping away all the fancy buildings and high-tech equipment you are left with a place on this earth that grows wine unlike any other. When you taste that in a glass you just know it. Nadia and Ilya have had to rely on the support of family, friends and financial institutions to make the dream of owning a winery a reality. Leaning Post began as a virtual winery and is so proud to now have the quaint tasting room at 1491 Hwy 8 on their home property in Winona, Ontario.
Ilya and Nadia are the brains and passion behind Leaning Post Wines. It started with a dream to take unique, interesting single vineyard blocks in Niagara and turn them into distinctive, terroir driven wines. Nadia and Ilya first met in their hometown of Winnipeg, MB where their passion for wine and each other was born.
Ilya has been a winemaker in the Niagara Region for the last 17 vintages working at Daniel Lenko Estate Winery, Foreign Affair and now at Leaning Post Wines. Ilya is also a consulting winemaker at the Good Earth Winery. Ilya’s true passion in life is to make world renowned wines from Niagara that really showcase the distinct terroir that Niagara offers.

About the Winery
Ca' del Monte
Ca del Monte is situated on the hillsides overlooking the village of Negrar, in the heart of Valpolicella. It has belonged to the same family for generations, and is now run by brothers Umberto and Giuseppe Zaconte. There’s nothing fancy about this place. The house and winery are modest - and are attached to a 17th century monastery.
The estate is approximately 50 acres, and its 15-65 year old vines lie on gentle slopes at 800-900 meters. They grow on four soils including clay, limestone, red volcanic soil with red stones, and “Toar,” a green volcanic soil. The vineyards of Ca Del Monte are planted with 20-40 year old vines of Corvina, Rodinella and Molinara grapes that are planted in poor soils that stress the vines and nurture the fruit. All of the farming is done traditionally and non-certified organic.
Cascina Castlèt
Cascina Castlèt has belonged to the Borio family for generations; Mariuccia, the current owner, inherited it from her father in 1970. Mariuccia focuses on her terroir and the local varieties. The vineyards of the estate are spread over 31 hectares, and are all located in Costigliole d'Asti.
Villa Calcinaia
Nestled in the rolling hills of Greve in Chianti, Villa Calcinaia is one of Chianti Classico’s historic estates, stewarded by the Capponi family since 1524. For more than five centuries, the family has cultivated these vineyards with a deep respect for tradition, place, and the enduring character of Sangiovese.
The estate spans sun-drenched slopes, olive groves, and woodlands that frame vineyards rooted in galestro and alberese soils—hallmarks of great Chianti Classico. Here, elevation, exposure, and soil diversity converge to shape wines of elegance, structure, and unmistakable terroir.
Villa Calcinaia’s philosophy marries heritage with thoughtful innovation. Vineyard work is guided by sustainable practices and careful parcel selection, and the estate’s wines are certified organic, reflecting a long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and the health of the land. In the cellar, the approach favors gentle extraction and patient aging to preserve purity of fruit and nuance of site. The result is a portfolio that captures the soul of Chianti Classico—from vibrant, expressive bottlings to refined Riservas and Gran Selezione wines that reward time in the cellar.

Château de La Chaize
Château de La Chaize is among the oldest, most historic estates in Burgundy’s Beaujolais region. Cared for by the same family for nearly three and a half centuries, the estate has been passed on to new owners, the Gruy family, who are equally committed to managing the estate with the utmost care, while implementing an ambitious environmental plan. Among the many initiatives is the conversion of all vineyards to organic farming, the adoption of precision viticulture, reducing carbon their carbon footprint, and recycling every by-product from viti- and vinicultural activity, to achieve zero waste.
Founded in 1670 by the seneschal of Lyon François de la Chaize d’Aix, the main Château de la Chaize building and gardens were completed by Jules-Hardouin Mansart and André le Nôtre, respectively architect and gardener of the Château de Versailles. Château de la Chaize is among the oldest, most historic estates in Burgundy’s Beaujolais region. Boasting over 250 acres of vineyards, it is also one of the largest. It is today considered one of the most innovative estates in Burgundy. Among its forward- thinking practices is the adoption of eco-friendly farming techniques, commonly referred to as Agriculture Raisonnée. Chemical treatments have been reduced to a strict minimum, for example, and the growing of grass between rows has been re-introduced to enrich the soil and reduce erosion.

Stylish and complex, the wine presents notes of white flesh peach, rockmelon, vanillin oak, and oatmeal on the nose. The palate is equally satisfying, with excellent weight and an expansive mouthfeel, wonderfully framed by bright acidity, which makes it focused and persistent, with a sustained, engaging finish. Azienda Agricola Tornatore
Out of a Sicilian family heritage that traces back to the 17th century, the Tornatore’s Mount Etna wine ventures began in 1865. Today the family’s operations are headed by Giuseppe Tornatore, a businessman whose expertise led to the acquisition of some of the region’s finest north-facing vineyards in the early 2000’s. That heritage and the Tornatore’s profound respect and understanding of the land is showcased in wines that capture the essence of Etna, deftly balancing concentrated flavors, complexity, freshness and refinement.
The company lies in the northern side of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. The soils have volcanic origin and were created through the disintegration of lava, ash and stones from previous volcanic eruptions. The climate on the northern side of the Etna is characterized by mild temperatures, and more rain fall reflecting the influence of the Volcano. The combination of soil, climate and the skill of the winemakers, have made the northern slope of Etna an ideal area for the production of high-quality wines. “Our vineyards and our winery are only a few kilometers from our family home. Our entire family is rooted there. Also a pale yellow hue, the 2023 Etna Bianco Pietrarizzo leaps from the glass with fresh Mediterranean character in its notes of fresh sage, fresh peach, flinty stones, and saline. Medium to full-bodied, it has a rounded texture, with a salty and savoury crystalline nature ... Drink 2025-2035.

One of the most intriguing and compelling wines you will ever taste, but that doesn't mean you will love it, because it is that different. It is a single vineyard blend of local carricante (predominant) and cataratto, the two prime local white varieties of Mt Etna. It has surprisingly lifted, enveloping and exotic nose with botanical rosemary/thyme herbs, spices, honey and citrus marmalade. It is medium-full bodied, firm, intense warm, finishing volcanically with flint/smoke. Great grip, balance and structure. The length is outstanding. Unique in the white wine world. Tasted March 2026

Already shifted into the pale golden colour spectrum, Tornatore's 2023 contrada Pietrarizzo delivers a wild bees wax and wildflower profile, pollen and light honey, fresh lime juice and a wild range of other flavours including some wood-derived, a unique and original profile to be sure. Acids are comfortable and length is very solid indeed, lingering on those singular flavours. I can't call it a classic beauty, but highly intriguing it is. So well worth a look at the price. Bring some lemon and wild herb marinated grilled fish to the table. Tasted March 2026.

Oenops
Founded in 2015, Oenops, meaning ‘wine face’, is a pioneering project whose mastermind is the talented winemaker Nikos Karatzas. Following the micro-négociant system, Oenops aims to produce high quality, great value wines. Rather than owning vineyards, the company sources grapes from selected plots across Greece’s best terroirs, with a focus on cool-climate sites and old vines of indigenous varieties.
At the core of the company’s philosophy is the close partnership with ambitious growers who share a same sustainability-focused approach. Oenops mission is to source great fruit and craft wines that fully express its quality and sense of time and place. By using simple methods, led by the profile of the grapes rather than by any winemaking protocols, the company has built a range of authentic, fruit-forward wines that bring out the best of each variety, terroir and style.
The team tastes meticulously and tailors its approach to each plot and variety, based on the core philosophy and ethos. By vinifying each plot and variety separately the team has grown an understanding of the specificity of each vineyard and of the work done each year, in turn allowing for improvement in each vintage.
A repertoire of indigenous grape varieties, such as Malagousia, Assyrtiko, Vidiano, Roditis, Xinomavro, Limniona, and Mavroudi, is expressed through different styles of Greek varietal wines and in labels that have gained widespread recognition, among consumers and critics alike.
What the team at Oenops strives for is, ultimately, to produce tasteful, elegant wines that work as perfect companions to every meal and special occasion.

Dot Series is represented by the pointillist label for a xinomavro that does not scream fruit from the first nose. A definite Greek-ness, always to dramatic effect, not exactly earthy, definitely not musty, but something only Greek wines have. As if the day were a root day and as a result, wines will smell a certain way. In this case of Naoussa, along with sensorial notes in high acid, low alcohol, and an unshakable sense of place. Drink 2026-2029. Tasted July 2026.

A clean and lovely, perfumed, firm and bright example of xinomavro, full of ripe cherry flavours in the varietal idiom. Tannins are also typically firm and dusty in the Italian fashion, but not overbearing, providing grip and textural relief, supported by firm acids. While it will continue to evolve, I'd suggest enjoying over the near term with salty protein to aid in the softening while still enjoying the vibrant fruit. Nicely done overall. Tasted July 2026.

This is a charming xinomavro, with radiant flavours of perfectly ripe red fruit berries and cherries, alongside savoury herbal and bramble notes and a pretty floral aroma. Medium bodied and fleshy, with juicy acidity and characteristically finely grippy tannins. Unaffected and expressive, this wine shows both authenticity and varietal fidelity. The finish lingers pleasantly, ending on a subtly spicy note. Tasted July 2026.

There is considerable complexity here on the nose, which I really like. It shows classic strawberry-red cherry fruit, some hay/earthy cellar character and cedary oak spice. It is light to medium bodied (13.1%), intense, with a smooth mid-palate, sour-edged, and quite dry in the end. Flavours stay well focused and hit excellent length. One of the most “old-world” styled pinots from PEC. Best 2027 to 2030. Last tasted June 2026

It has likely been 10 years since Keint-He and Greer Road have come through VINTAGES, a shock and shame considering the prominence this site holds in Prince Edward County. The 2023 is a fine and frankly classic vintage to re-enter the monopoly stratosphere with its beet-earthy, tisane-tannic and ultra-hyper PEC expressiveness. There is some experience and haute maturity in the 2023, a wine so settled you can take off the shades, sit back, relax and savour a glass. Better still, the scene would be ideal were the light fading, the grill only residually warm to the touch and the stars getting set to emerge. Like meditating over Amarone, only with a more ethereal red wine that requires nothing but dexterity. Cheese sold separately. Drink 2026-2028. Tasted June 2026.

Pale-medium red garnet; open and spicy, evolving, earthy and twiggy, with old wood perfume, cold wood smoke and creosote, brown spices with a modicum of tart red fruit remaining, though this is now well beyond its fruity years (and likely was never particularly fruity). The palate offers good weight and density in the category, silky texture, balanced acids and good to very good length. To be enjoyed over the near term, best at the table with something savoury and earthy. Tasted June 2026.

Intense menthol and dark fruit aromas segue to a tight and drying palate, showing both sapidity and salinity. There's freshness of acidity and purity of cool black and blue fruits in the background – but at present it remains veiled behind the wood. This needs time but will come good. Since last year, Fabio Motta has been under majority control of Agricole Gussalli Beretta, the historic arms manufacturers who already own several other wineries in Italy.
