Zesty & Aromatic
Gilvesy winery is located in the outskirts of Lake Balaton, near an ancient dormant volcano, in Hungary. Hungarian expat Robert Gilvesy moved back to his homeland from Canada to start this exciting project involving native grape varieties and volcanic soils.
A blend of organically grown Riesling, Olaszrizling and Furmint, three varieties that have existed in the wine region for a long time. In style, it's a rich, flavoursome wine with explosive aromatics. This is what a classic Mount Saint George wine is like: modern and spiced up with volcanic notes.
It's delicious when paired with summer meals: fresh salads dressed with dried fruits such as cranberries and walnuts, grilled fish with potatoes and zesty ceviches.
About the Winery
Gilvesy Pincészet
Hungarian expat Róbert Gilvesy moved back to his homeland from Canada, and began building the Gilvesy winemaking empire on the former Esterházy estate on Szent György Hill. Thanks to years of hard work, the Hegymagas-based facility now includes a modern building complex and about 13 hectares of vineyards, in addition to being the home of the family. The area is shaped by 6 million years old volcanoes, where indigenous and international varieties grow organically.
Robert’s absolute admiration for nature and the terroir translates into an immense respect for the environment. By farming using organic practices, the soils and the vines stay healthy. In the winery, by letting nature take its course without controlling the processes, and using local resources, such as Hungarian oak barrels, Gilvesy promotes and protects the Balaton region.

Domaine Baud Père et Fils
The history of Domaine Baud dates back to 1742, and it wasn't until 1950 when René Baud, the 7th generation, rebuilt the vineyard which had suffered from the phylloxera crisis and two World Wars.
Starting with only 4 hectares, the vineyard progressively expanded to 20 hectares with the help of successive generations. Now, managed by siblings Clémentine and Bastien, the 9th generation, the estate continues to flourish and grow, with a strong commitment to sustainable viticulture and preserving the traditions and style that makes the wines of the Jura so unique and incredible.
The estate achieved the Terra Vitis certification in 2014 for its eco-friendly work and environmental preservation.

About the Winery
Groupe Bellene
Led by Nicolas Potel in Beaune, Groupe Bellene is composed of the négociant arm Maison Roche de Bellene, the winery arm Domaine de Bellene, and a special back-vintage series under the Collection Bellenum label.
- Maison Roche de Bellene offers a complete range of wines, with an emphasis on individual terroirs from old vines of more than 40 years. All of the growers that Nicolas works with are either organic certified or sustainably farmed.
- Domaine de Bellene represents the wines that are produced and bottled from Nicolas Potel's private vineyard holdings.
- Collection Bellenum is a back vintage series that Nicolas Potel sourced from his friends in the region, offering a magnificent selection of bottled history. The wines have moved only twice in their lives, from the original cellar to Potel's and now to yours!
Nicolas Potel grew up at Volnay's Domaine Pousse d'Or, where his father worked. He trained abroad and returned home in 1996 to build a négociant business and started Maison Nicolas Potel, where he sourced grapes from good parcels, often working with the growers to improve the quality. By 2002, he was making 120 wines from 50 different appellations, and the rest is history!

Les Quartiers De Nuits is yet another minuscule plot of a vineyard identified and chosen by Nicolas Potel, not quite one-third of a hectare, planted 96 years before this 2023 harvest. An early one for the most part, before the cold winds move in and ahead of Grand Cru neighbours like that of Echezeaux and Clos de Vougeot. There is a bit of mean intensity and streak in this singular, lieu-dit cru of a Bourgogne. The tannins are fierce, they lash upon the palate with severity and therefore the necessity to give time will become the requiem to success. Les Quartiers De Nuits is no shrinking violet and in fact the mix of botanical verdancy and bitters make up a formula which could never be solved in the first few years. The stuffing can’t be denied and the objective is perspicuous. Stay clear for a while. Drink 2028-2035.

Matthias Hager
The Hager Matthias winery is located in the small village of Mollands in the Kamptal area of Lower Austria. Matthias took over the 12-hectare land and the family business at an early age. He aims to produce the best quality wine possible and to focus on being in balance with nature. The lands are cultivated according to biodynamic principles and are certified Demeter. Matthias has a vast knowledge about plants and insects, and about keeping the flora and fauna in harmony with the vines. Matthias Hager is one of the most experimental winemakers in the Kamptal region, Austria. He understood early how to work with different soil types from loess to clay. He established different product lines to highlight these differences: the blue one representing fresh, lively wines including Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc; and the brown line gravitating towards more earthy, flavourful produce and the red line stands for no sulphites!

About the Winery
Bideona
Bideona owns or manages over 300 parcels of extraordinary vines in villages throughout the Rioja Alavesa, the coolest, smallest and most Atlantic sub-zone of Spain’s most famous wine region.
The vineyards of the Rioja Alavesa are defined by parcels of old bush vines planted on terraces or hillside slopes with a high percentage of limestone. Located in the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria, Bideona’s vines have an average age of 50 years and many were planted in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, before high-yielding clones became available.
Bideona puts the focus firmly on terroir by making each wine in its Vino de Pueblo range as a field blend of Tempranillo and other native varieties from plots in an individual village. Each is named with an acronym – L3Z4 for Leza, L4GD4 for Laguardia, S4MG0 for Samaniego and V1BN4 for Villabuena – owing to DOCa Rioja regulations that only allow village names to be marked if both the winery and the vineyard are in the same location.
“Bideona’s reason for existence is to make wines that show the personality of the Rioja Alavesa and its historic wine villages” states company co-founder and director, Andreas Kubach MW. “We have access to a wealth of diverse plant material in our parcels of old vines, which we believe contributes to the complexity of the wines as well as the differences between villages.”

Nine months has done nothing to diminish the energy and swagger of Las Parcelas which brings together fruit from Bideona’s four distinct terroirs each labeled under a viñedos singulares distinction. Sure this may lack the depth of those unique expressions but it does gather them as one layered tempranillo and best of all the 2021 vintage is presented in high esteem. Much anticipation for what else is still to come. Last tasted December 2024. Las Parcelas takes winemaker Tao Platon’s Rioja work to another level because fruit remains at the core in the most pure and clear way. There is little to no distraction by wood or other winemaking work and terroir speaks about as prominently as it can in a wine at this price level. Perfumed, silken, moderate of style, easy to drink and finely tannic without austerity or unnecessary grip. Fine in so many ways. Drink 2025-2030. Tasted March 2024.

Bideona draws from over 300, mostly tiny parcels in Rioja Alavesa, the highest sub- region in the denomination, aiming to capture the perfume and freshness of high-elevation tempranillo and other locals. Las Parcelas, is a blend of parcels, considered a 'regional' wine in the portfolio's hierarchy, below single vineyard and single village wines, but's it's a beauty on every level, especially having moved past the reductive stage noted in my previous review. I love the delicate fragrance offered straight off the top, replete with fresh red fruit and an herbal-floral twist, almost peppery, while the palate delivers crunchy limestone acids and silky-firm tannins lending a sandy texture. I enjoy the freshness of fruit now, though I suspect tannins will soften nicely over the next year or two if you're seeking more silk. Tasted December 2024. Previous: Bideona's Las Parcelas Rioja hails from the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria in the Rioja Alavesa, the highest elevation vineyards in the denomination. There's a slightly reductive edge to this young, predominantly tempranillo- based red, with a mix of both fresh red and also black fruit, with notable floral components and a notable lack of obvious wood influence, you could say a more contemporary style. The palate is plush and nicely concentrated without excess, deeply fruit with lasting flavours. It makes a great counterpart to Bideona's more traditional Artelan Reserva bottling at a similar price, two styles, two very good wines. Drink this one from about 2026-2032. Tasted March 2024.

Tommaso is third-generation winemaker at Cortonesi that owns some of the most prized vineyards in the north and south-east of Montalcino. Favourable geography, rocky soils, and ingenious winemaking all come together to create some of the region's deepest and most elegant Brunello wines.
The Cortonesi family has been making wine since the 1970s. At first, wines were made to be enjoyed by family, friends and neighbours, but then in 1985, Cortonesi had gained enough traction within their community that they began to offer their wines commercially. Today, Cortonesi remains a family business that continues to work according to tradition, while employing modern technologies to the enhance the quality of their production.
Lovers of Sangiovese must experience “La Mannella”, a collection of wines exclusively sourced from Cortonesi's private vine land. This farm covers 56 hectares, eight of which are devoted to the production of some of the world's most coveted and age-worthy Brunello di Montalcino.

From the historic farm, the product of an excellent work between the countryside and the cellar, an emblematic Brunello: raspberry on the nose, touches of nutmeg, then caper fruit and ginger. Slightly salty on the palate, finish with notes of raspberry and sweet spices. Great length.

Tomasso Cortonesi's quip is messaged through the mouth of Francesco Ripaccioli: "When you have no space you have money. So you build a cellar and then you have space - but you have no money." Appropriate irony from a northwestern Montalcinese winemaker whose La Mannella history has been one of Tetris - but that will soon change. The quality of his wines from this property arrive at peak form with an outstanding 2019 and going forward new cellar space will help to raise the bar. A bar set by these two Brunello boys who bottle in May because "that's when the Annata are ready." Also allows a rest period for six months in bottle ahead of Benvenuto Brunello and eight before a January release. Tomasso's '19 is fragrant but the kind at dusk on a cool November day in Montalcino, just like an hour ago. The most natural sweetness in a La Mannella sangiovese that has ever been noted and that makes for a Brunello you can find early gratification, but deeper down is the understanding concerning a sangiovese with fortified structure. Purely, expressly La Mannella, fresh and of a Brunello with great purpose. Drink 2027-2038. Tasted November 2023.

RR81 stands for 'Regional Road 81' - the road The Farm sits on, and a main artery through wine country. The RR81 approach to winemaking is simply fermented grapes with nothing added. One-off wines sourced from some of the best single vineyards in Niagara. These wines are made in the barn at The Farm with minimal intervention (just a few bins and an old basket press). The result equals some of the best, and most unique, wines coming out of Niagara.

Leaning Post
A leaning post is what you find at the beginning of a row of grapes, anchoring the wires that are the frame-work for growing grapevines. It is the beginning of an obsession to translate a time and place into liquid. Leaning Post wines take you to that beginning by finding small, unique plots of land in Niagara and putting them in bottle. Because after stripping away all the fancy buildings and high-tech equipment you are left with a place on this earth that grows wine unlike any other. When you taste that in a glass you just know it. Nadia and Ilya have had to rely on the support of family, friends and financial institutions to make the dream of owning a winery a reality. Leaning Post began as a virtual winery and is so proud to now have the quaint tasting room at 1491 Hwy 8 on their home property in Winona, Ontario.
Ilya and Nadia are the brains and passion behind Leaning Post Wines. It started with a dream to take unique, interesting single vineyard blocks in Niagara and turn them into distinctive, terroir driven wines. Nadia and Ilya first met in their hometown of Winnipeg, MB where their passion for wine and each other was born.
Ilya has been a winemaker in the Niagara Region for the last 17 vintages working at Daniel Lenko Estate Winery, Foreign Affair and now at Leaning Post Wines. Ilya is also a consulting winemaker at the Good Earth Winery. Ilya’s true passion in life is to make world renowned wines from Niagara that really showcase the distinct terroir that Niagara offers.

Wines in Niagara

The Sauvignon Blanc grapes were sourced from the Niagara Lakeshore sub-appellation. The wine was split between two different vessels (neutral French oak barriques and stainless-steel tank) to be aged on its lees for 7 months. This is a more elegant style of savvy, compared to the racy, zippy examples from New Zealand. It has a nose of kiwi, mango, grapefruit, subtle garden herbs and spice notes. It has a lovely, creamy texture with tropical fruits, limes, grassy/herbaceous notes and a bright, finessed finish. Can drink this now and for the next couple of years.

Azienda Agricola Tornatore
Out of a Sicilian family heritage that traces back to the 17th century, the Tornatore’s Mount Etna wine ventures began in 1865. Today the family’s operations are headed by Giuseppe Tornatore, a businessman whose expertise led to the acquisition of some of the region’s finest north-facing vineyards in the early 2000’s. That heritage and the Tornatore’s profound respect and understanding of the land is showcased in wines that capture the essence of Etna, deftly balancing concentrated flavors, complexity, freshness and refinement.
The company lies in the northern side of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. The soils have volcanic origin and were created through the disintegration of lava, ash and stones from previous volcanic eruptions. The climate on the northern side of the Etna is characterized by mild temperatures, and more rain fall reflecting the influence of the Volcano. The combination of soil, climate and the skill of the winemakers, have made the northern slope of Etna an ideal area for the production of high-quality wines. “Our vineyards and our winery are only a few kilometers from our family home. Our entire family is rooted there. Weingut Bianka und Daniel Schmitt
Bianka and Daniel took over the Weingut Schmitt in 2012 as the fourth generation to lead the winery. They are based in Wonnegau in the south Rheinhessen, centered in Flörsheim-Dalsheim. All of the vineyards are in Flörsheim-Dalsheim and neighbor villages Monsheim and Kriegsheim. Bianka and Daniel have been working their 16 hectares biodynamically for over a decade and are one of only 80 producers in Germany to be Demeter certified. They work with amphorae as well as used oak barrels and release a ‘Natur’ line that contains no added sulphur.
Here are Bianka and Daniel in their own words:
“Working biodynamically is a lifestyle that includes producing and spreading preparations in the vineyards as well as social interactions. The interactions between the life in the soil (like bacteria, mykorizen, plants as green cover and the vines) are composed with each other. Vines become stronger and get more vitality from a living soil, not from chemical treatments.
This active interaction in the soil life, the mutual strengthening of the plants result in stronger resilience for the vines which reflects the high quality of the grape, supports the presence of the individual soil types (calcareous soil covered by clay and partly loess, pebble). By working according to the biodynamic principles, biodiversity is supported as an automatic successor. As a result, the vineyards and the biotopes created by Bianka and Daniel offer a home for a diverse and local animal community.
After hand picking, the grapes are processed with or without skin maceration. And rest in wooden oaks (5000L, 3000L, 1200L, 600L) or clay amphorae (1200L, 300L) for at least 12 months on the whole yeast depot. The focus is on offering an optimal aging potential for the years to come. Founded in 2015, Oenops, meaning ‘wine face’, is a pioneering project whose mastermind is the talented winemaker Nikos Karatzas. Following the micro-négociant system, Oenops aims to produce high quality, great value wines. Rather than owning vineyards, the company sources grapes from selected plots across Greece’s best terroirs, with a focus on cool-climate sites and old vines of indigenous varieties.
At the core of the company’s philosophy is the close partnership with ambitious growers who share a same sustainability-focused approach. Oenops mission is to source great fruit and craft wines that fully express its quality and sense of time and place. About the Winery
Vinos Baettig
Francisco Baettig and Carlos de Carlos have been friends for more than 20 years and share a passion for high-quality wines that are genuine and connected to the land where they are made.
Their families arrived in Traiguén and Purén from Switzerland in the 19th century, where they worked in agriculture, surrounded by volcanoes, lakes and forests, silos, livestock, wagons, and wheat fields.
Francisco and Carlos' passion for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, together with their love for the land of their ancestors, was the inspiration for making their own wines that pay homage to these beloved terroirs. After studying the soil and climate in Traiguén for several years, they chose a plateau with volcanic soil between the Quino and Traiguén Rivers and planted vines in 2013.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Viñedo Los Parientes originates from Traiguén, Araucanía. Fermented with 15% whole clusters and aged for eight months in oak barrels, it presents a purple hue. Aromas of cherries, pomegranate, dried flowers, and sweet briars intertwine with cedar notes. Dry, lean and taut on the palate and the combination of stem tannins, oak and silky pinot-texture elevates things, creating a faintly plush mouthfeel with a gentle roughness. This is a meticulously crafted Pinot Noir from the deep south of Chile.

About the Winery
Domaine Peter Sichel
Tucked away in a hidden valley in a remote corner of the Languedoc-Roussillon lies a truly special place: the village of Cucugnan. Historically, there was much wine produced here, given its isolated location, but gradually the local people moved away to the towns. There are now just 130 people living in the village. As the vineyards were left mostly abandoned, the local flora and fauna were permitted to thrive. Cucugnan became a unique area, full of biodiversity, which shines through in the rare plants and flowers that grow there today.
Peter Sichel (of the Bordeaux négociant family) first discovered this valley on a road trip with a friend in the 1960s. He was so spellbound by the place that he bought a house there and, in 1988, planted a vineyard. The project grew, albeit slowly, but the arrival of Peter’s thoughtful and environmentally inspired grandson, Alexander Sichel, has turned the Domaine Peter Sichel project completely around.
Since 2019, Alexander has converted the estate to organics and biodynamics, achieving organic certification in 2022. Furthermore, he is committed to supporting polyculture in and around the vineyards, even enlisting the help of a PhD programme from a Dutch university to identify the incredible array of plant life in the vineyard.
Alexander’s grandfather planted the vines between 30-40 years old. Parcels of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and Roussanne lie mostly on the best slopes of the valley. Starting from 350-500 metres’ altitude, these slopes have very little topsoil; the roots go almost straight into the bedrock. The viticultural team here has done much work to focus on the unique characteristics of each parcel to express the terroir of this stunning valley in the most authentic way.

This is an incredibly suave, elegant and delicious grenache with bags of sweet fruit, but never sinking into soupiness. It is from 100% organically grown old vines grown in clay-marl mountain soils. Expect a gentle wave of candied red fruits, fine white pepper, spice and fresh herbs. It is medium weight, almost silken in texture, with equally dispersed warmth, sweetness and tension. Tannins are a bit firm (age it two years?). The length is outstanding. Tasted January 2025

Such lovely fragrance and perfume here from this pure grenache from the Terre Rouge parcel at c. 500m elevation, a standout from the excellent Sichel range, certified organic and in conversion to biodynamics. The palate is so juicy, succulent and well balanced, smooth and supple but energetic and lively. Saliva rains down on the palate from salinity and umami, while tannins are fine and light, a total paradigm shift from the often heavy and alcoholic versions produced in many parts of the Rhône Valley, here carrying 14.5% alcohol with style and grace. I admire the delicacy, finesse and balance, and the exceptional length. Biodynamic farming on a clearly prime piece of terroir, a beauty, and such a happy new discovery for me. Best from 2026. Terre Rouge suggest red soils, or clay terroir rich in an element like iron, always great for syrah and here for grenache. The source is Sichel’s appellative “monopole” of Cucugnan IGP inside southerly Corbières and yet so opposite as a style to that of the carignan. Bigger, grander and fruitier, with quite an increase in alcohol (to 14.5 percent) that seems more inline with a Languedoc red. That said the grape and its terroir enact the truth and that would be for a more obvious, what you see is what you get red. Mystery, subtlety and fantasy are not part of the plan or mix and still this is intriguing stuff. Also the kind of red to appeal to lovers of the Southern Rhône, especially Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe, equally gorgeous if also less complicated. Drink 2026-2032. Tasted January 2025.

This captivating grenache hails from a distinguished site at 500 meters above sea level, where clay soils are embraced by the surrounding forest. Richer in hue than its lighter blended counterpart, Cucuniano, the Terre Rouge offers an alluring and expressive aromatic profile. Beyond its fragrant notes of red berries and soy, the palate reveals deeper layers of black fruits, tinged with hints of licorice. It stands out with a notable sapidity and a more defined structure than the norm, its tannins angular yet refined, offering an elevated sense of depth. Excellent length. This late July, 2025 "Celler" release of Maison Roche de Bellene's 2020 Savigny-Les-Beaune is the first for VINTAGES just a month after we sadly lost proprietor Nicolas Potel. Got to believe Nico is looking down with a wry smile and we do the same in turn after nosing the playful gaminess of this pinot noir. One whiff and we are transported to the clays and mineral underbelly of Bourgogne, but more specifically the area situated along the Rhoin between the Hill of Corton and Beaune. The 2020 is backed by a steadfastness of strong bones and resolve of meaty flesh. Markedly soil driven and terroir determined, equalled by the animal nature of such a wine, finishing with acidity and austerity. This actually feels like a Bourgogne mired in a minor dumb phase with its best moments yet to come. Drink 2026-2031.

Set for LCBO release on August 7th, this is a charming Savigny rouge from Roche de Bellene, produced by the late Nicolas Potel who passed unexpectedly just a month ago. It has all of the signature finesse and delicacy of both the appellation and the house style, a micro-négociant wine selected with care and consistency by Potel from a tiny, 0.025 hectare parcel. Tannins are ultra-fine and polished at this stage of evolution, cradled by ripe-firm acids, impressive in this warm vintage, and the finish echoes on and on, subtly, delicately. Ready to enjoy or hold another 2-3 year - no need for long term ageing here.

Villa Calcinaia
Villa Calcinaia is situated in the centre of Chianti Classico near the town of Greve-in-Chianti. This historic estate has been home to the Counts Capponi since 1524, and is maintained by Sebastiano Capponi and his brother Niccolo. In 1992, Count Sebastiano Capponi became the first in the history of the family to manage the winery personally, giving a new life to the vineyards and the cellar.
The family owns 200 hectares of land planted with olive trees, vines and pine trees. Organic farming is the standard at Villa Calcinaia where 75 acres of vineyard are planted with Sangiovese, Merlot, Canaiolo, Grechetto, Vernaccia, Trebbiano, and Malvasia. Through every vintage, the wines are crafted with food in mind. They are balanced, elegant, perfumed, and savoury yet refreshing with restrained vigour and intensity that ensures longevity.

Calcinaia's 2019 Riserva is a muscular and solidly built wine, with tannins still grippy and firm, also showing a lightly earthy-reductive edge still on display. Scorched earth and dried herb flavours mingle with black cherry fruit on a substantial frame, ripe at 14.5% declared. Very good length and depth. It's clearly made from the long term and is another couple of years away at least from prime enjoyment. Best from about 2026-2036. Tasted February 2024.

Gilvesy Pincészet
Hungarian expat Róbert Gilvesy moved back to his homeland from Canada, and began building the Gilvesy winemaking empire on the former Esterházy estate on Szent György Hill. Thanks to years of hard work, the Hegymagas-based facility now includes a modern building complex and about 13 hectares of vineyards, in addition to being the home of the family. The area is shaped by 6 million years old volcanoes, where indigenous and international varieties grow organically.
Robert’s absolute admiration for nature and the terroir translates into an immense respect for the environment. By farming using organic practices, the soils and the vines stay healthy. In the winery, by letting nature take its course without controlling the processes, and using local resources, such as Hungarian oak barrels, Gilvesy promotes and protects the Balaton region.

The 2018 “Tradition” bottling represented Cahors with good distinction and from first nose this follow-up ’19 takes that excellence one step further. Not that it gives anything away for free because there is some reserve here but the wine opens with air and agitation to reveal classicism in every respect. The fruit is mature and slow developed, ever so slightly charred and surely on a low trajectory of incrementally developing complexity. Cautious now and yet so close to drinking as well it it’s ever going to be. Drink 2024-2028. Tasted March 2023.

Open and fragrant, maturing nicely at this stage, Lamartine's classic Cahors (90% malbec with 10% merlot), is a lovely and succulent wine, well-proportioned and fresh, with lively acids and a real limestone twang. Wood is fully in the background, an accessory to complexity, while tannins are ripe, fine and silky and length is exceptional in the price category. Classy, well made wine, authentic, and surely better than most Bordeaux for the money. Drink or hold another 4-6 years. Tasted March 2023.

Wines in Niagara

The Hemeris Vineyard on the Beamsville Bench, which is a favourite farm of Senchuk’s, is a gem owned by the Kouvassilopoulos family. The over 40-year-old Chardonnay vines are the base for this traditionally made sparkling wine that spends six months in oaks barrels, with 42 months on the less, and a 6 g/l dosage. It shows a lovely golden colour in the glass with a lively bubbly. It starts with autolytic/biscuit notes on the nose followed by lemon curd, golden apple, pear, white flowers and brioche. The bead on the palate is vigorous with a rich, creamy, saline entry and just a hint of flint. It’s fresh and finessed with lemon tart, stone fruits, nutty accents, toasty brioche and mouth-watering acidity on the lifted, fresh finish.

Like the Apla red from Oenops, the rosé is blend of Greek natives xinomavro, limniona and mavroudi, rendered here in a pale copper-orange colour, with a lovely, fresh, crunchy, tart red fruit-inflected nose. The palate is dry and crisp, with some waxy and savoury flavours, balanced-fresh acids and good length. A pleasant and crunchy rosé all in all, with solid flavour definition. About the Winery
Domaine de la Garenne
Rooted in the hills of Verdigny for generations, the Godon-Reverdy family has always worked this land — first in service to the Lords of Verdigny, then the cathedral of Bourges, and finally for themselves. The slopes, trees, and fields have shaped the winery's identity, walked by the parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents before them. It was after World War II that their great-grandfather, Amédée Reverdy, became a winemaker — not by plan, but by providence and a fateful draw of the short straw. Since then, each generation has built on that legacy.
Today, Domaine de la Garenne cultivates 12.5 hectares across 37 carefully managed plots in the Sancerre AOC, a renowned Centre-Loire appellation recognized since 1936 for whites and 1959 for reds and rosés. They grow Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, producing dry white, red, and rosé wines shaped by the region's oceanic climate and diverse soils. Their vineyards span three key soil types: Caillottes (chalky and vibrant), Clay-siliceous (flinty and mineral), and Terres Blanches (rich clay-limestone offering fruit and length). Embracing organic and biodynamic practices, they are committed to working in harmony with nature, letting each terroir express itself fully in the wines. In a region of 366 passionate winegrowers and 2,999 hectares under vine, the estate remains a proud family story — one of heritage, resilience, and a profound love of the land.

Pearce Predhomme is a collaboration of like-minded individuals from around the globe. Founded with a mission to build and import wines from our favourite appellations while offering an unequaled value/quality ratio for the sommeliers & wine buyers in Ontario. This is a project between Toronto Sommelier and entrepreneur Will Predhomme and Ontario wine importer Nicholas Pearce. They have partnered with Radford Dale in South Africa and NorthWest Wine Co. in Oregon to create these special cuvées.

About the Winery
Groupe Bellene
Led by Nicolas Potel in Beaune, Groupe Bellene is composed of the négociant arm Maison Roche de Bellene, the winery arm Domaine de Bellene, and a special back-vintage series under the Collection Bellenum label.
- Maison Roche de Bellene offers a complete range of wines, with an emphasis on individual terroirs from old vines of more than 40 years. All of the growers that Nicolas works with are either organic certified or sustainably farmed.
- Domaine de Bellene represents the wines that are produced and bottled from Nicolas Potel's private vineyard holdings.
- Collection Bellenum is a back vintage series that Nicolas Potel sourced from his friends in the region, offering a magnificent selection of bottled history. The wines have moved only twice in their lives, from the original cellar to Potel's and now to yours!
Nicolas Potel grew up at Volnay's Domaine Pousse d'Or, where his father worked. He trained abroad and returned home in 1996 to build a négociant business and started Maison Nicolas Potel, where he sourced grapes from good parcels, often working with the growers to improve the quality. By 2002, he was making 120 wines from 50 different appellations, and the rest is history!

About the Winery
Bideona
Bideona owns or manages over 300 parcels of extraordinary vines in villages throughout the Rioja Alavesa, the coolest, smallest and most Atlantic sub-zone of Spain’s most famous wine region.
The vineyards of the Rioja Alavesa are defined by parcels of old bush vines planted on terraces or hillside slopes with a high percentage of limestone. Located in the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria, Bideona’s vines have an average age of 50 years and many were planted in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, before high-yielding clones became available.
Bideona puts the focus firmly on terroir by making each wine in its Vino de Pueblo range as a field blend of Tempranillo and other native varieties from plots in an individual village. Each is named with an acronym – L3Z4 for Leza, L4GD4 for Laguardia, S4MG0 for Samaniego and V1BN4 for Villabuena – owing to DOCa Rioja regulations that only allow village names to be marked if both the winery and the vineyard are in the same location.

L4GD4, one of four viñedos singulares or singular landscape explorations from Bideona from a range of tempranillo also known as Viños de Pueblo. This old vines example is Laguardia, literally “the guard” because of its defence position for what is a most endearing village. Ripens early, followed by that of the others in the line - Samaniego, Villabuena and Leza. The 2020 feels like a wine of more substance and depth than that of 2019 though without the same level of intensity. That said there is a seriousness, at times a brooding character and in the end a profundity that must be recognized. Has already done some travelling and maturing but there should be no reason to think it won’t drink well for another six or seven years. Drink 2024-2029. Tasted December 2024.
