Husband and wife duo Ilya and Nadia started Leaning Post winery in Niagara over 10 years ago. Initially a virtual set up, the winery now located on Highway 8, has become a reference producer in Niagara.
The 2017 vintage was very strange, with cold and rainy weather until late-August. Then the clouds parted and the sun began shining, allowing Leaning Post to hang grapes and ripen them fully late into the season. As a result the intensity and concentration on this wine is unparalleled with strawberry, blackcurrant, mulberry and blackberry aromas exploding from the glass.
The lifted palate frames intense flavours of blueberry, plum, cocoa and coffee backed up by savoury tobacco leaf, anise and oregano notes. Exceptional weight and substance combine with powerful yet soft tannins creating a wonderful texture that brings you to an unbelievable, lingering finish.
For pairing this Merlot, think: roast turkey, beef short rib, or a rustic ratatouille! For braised meat pairings, try complementing Merlot’s boisterous fruit notes with chimichurri sauce.
