Intense menthol and dark fruit aromas segue to a tight and drying palate, showing both sapidity and salinity. There's freshness of acidity and purity of cool black and blue fruits in the background – but at present it remains veiled behind the wood. This needs time but will come good. Since last year, Fabio Motta has been under majority control of Agricole Gussalli Beretta, the historic arms manufacturers who already own several other wineries in Italy.

Leaning Post

A leaning post is what you find at the beginning of a row of grapes, anchoring the wires that are the frame-work for growing grapevines. It is the beginning of an obsession to translate a time and place into liquid. Leaning Post wines take you to that beginning by finding small, unique plots of land in Niagara and putting them in bottle. Because after stripping away all the fancy buildings and high-tech equipment you are left with a place on this earth that grows wine unlike any other. When you taste that in a glass you just know it. Nadia and Ilya have had to rely on the support of family, friends and financial institutions to make the dream of owning a winery a reality. Leaning Post began as a virtual winery and is so proud to now have the quaint tasting room at 1491 Hwy 8 on their home property in Winona, Ontario.
Ilya and Nadia are the brains and passion behind Leaning Post Wines. It started with a dream to take unique, interesting single vineyard blocks in Niagara and turn them into distinctive, terroir driven wines. Nadia and Ilya first met in their hometown of Winnipeg, MB where their passion for wine and each other was born.
Ilya has been a winemaker in the Niagara Region for the last 17 vintages working at Daniel Lenko Estate Winery, Foreign Affair and now at Leaning Post Wines. Ilya is also a consulting winemaker at the Good Earth Winery. Ilya’s true passion in life is to make world renowned wines from Niagara that really showcase the distinct terroir that Niagara offers.

Wines in Niagara
93 points (2021) - Rick VanSickle
It’s just so sad that Riesling has fallen so far from favour with consumers. Senchuk has been a champion of this super-star grape in Niagara since the early days of what was at one time his virtual brand. And he’s never given up on it, no matter how difficult it can be to sell. This expression from nearby Grimsby Hillside Vineyard is world class and is everything I love about this grape in Niagara. Senchuk stopped fermentation at 11 g/l RS and allowed for 11 months of lees aging. The enticing nose shows the full range of saline minerality, lanoline, grapefruit, empire apple, honeysuckle, savoury notes and a touch of ginger. The fresh vein of saline continues on the palate with peach pit, lime citrus, crisp apples, a touch of honeycomb and a vibrant, juicy finish. Can age through 2030.

Domaine de Pellehaut

"Pellehaut" gets its name from the Roman or medieval word pila (meaning any kind of solid, pillar-like construction). The presence two kilometres away of mosaics decorated with vines at the Gallo-Roman site of Séviac bears witness to the fact that vines were already grown at Pellehaut in Roman times.
Pellehaut follows a traditional, low-intervention approach to winemaking, using native yeasts from its own vineyards and avoiding thermovinification in favor of cooler fermentation to preserve varietal aromas. After fermentation, the wines are either kept cool in stainless steel tanks or aged for up to two years in fine-grain oak barrels from the Allier forests. Though not part of a prestigious appellation, the estate takes pride in its diverse range of 16 wines, aiming to offer authentic expressions of Gascogne that inspire curiosity and pleasantly surprise wine enthusiasts.

Sourced from 100+-year-old País vines that have since been grafted to Cabernet, the 2023 Selección de Parcelas Los Padrinos Cabernet Sauvignon was aged 15 months in 50% new barrique, mainly from Tonnellerie Taransaud. On the nose, it is pure and youthfully primary, slowly opening with a beautiful bouquet of black and purple fruits with bramble and tobacco accents. The palate is suave, elegant, seamless and concentrated, transitioning to an effortless, spherical and floating finish of remarkably refined tannins. The precision and integration of all elements here are simply spectacular. This is a benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon not just for Maule but for Chile as a whole, and it should have no problem developing for two decades, if not more.

It’s hard to imagine a better encapsulation of this wonderful season in the Barossa. The aromas are a beguiling combination of spice, fruit cake, dark plum and prune with a liberal dollop of dark chocolate and a lick of licorice. Supremely balanced and poised with the chalky thread of tannin and the liberal use of oak lacing it together into a marvelous example of the Barossa at its best.

Cortonesi

“I’m a lucky man who has been given the opportunity to realize my dream and continue my family’s efforts making wine in the land where I was born.” – Tommaso Cortonesi
Tommaso is third-generation winemaker at Cortonesi that owns some of the most prized vineyards in the north and south-east of Montalcino. Favourable geography, rocky soils, and ingenious winemaking all come together to create some of the region's deepest and most elegant Brunello wines.
The Cortonesi family has been making wine since the 1970s. At first, wines were made to be enjoyed by family, friends and neighbours, but then in 1985, Cortonesi had gained enough traction within their community that they began to offer their wines commercially. Today, Cortonesi remains a family business that continues to work according to tradition, while employing modern technologies to the enhance the quality of their production.
Lovers of Sangiovese must experience “La Mannella”, a collection of wines exclusively sourced from Cortonesi's private vine land. This farm covers 56 hectares, eight of which are devoted to the production of some of the world's most coveted and age-worthy Brunello di Montalcino.

Aromatic is the ways of Alsatian white blends, noble and arguably more Edelzwicker than Gentil. Alsace is a place where historically the grape variety is highlighted on the label, more so than the region, but these blends transform that thought. Noble follows that particular tradition with this blend celebrating growers and the places they farm. Comes together just a shade above bone dry, layered with citrus and a side of creamy orchard fruit, from riesling with gewürztraminer, ehrenfelser, oraniensteiner & pinot gris. Profoundly important for B.C. white wine, essential and appropriate, for wherever and whenever a bottle needs sharing. Drink 2026-2029. Tasted May 2026.

Hanging tough, firm, taut and focused or a 2018 Bordeaux of such reasonable means. Fruit shows a hint or two of leathery, drying and secondary character but ample freshness persists. Stays well afloat without any logged behaviour dragging the fruit downwards or exhausting the wines spirit. Feel comfortable popping bottles for two more years. Last tasted January 2025.
Still very much a youthful Bordeaux with primary fruit not just intact but exhibiting all that joyous exuberance you want from a value-based Right Bank wine. Nice little touch of orange zest and toasted wood wafts. Creamed centre and plenty of parochial tact, followed by a liquifying of chalky tannins. Tight little package here and more than tidy value for current consumption and good drinking four or five years further down the line. Drink 2023-2027.

Petite Cuvée leads with classic cedar, desert scrub, and black fruit aromas that shout the south Okanagan Valley. The blend, a 43/33/16/4/2/2 mix of cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot, syrah, and malbec, results in a well-rounded, mouth-filling red with moderate tannins and an easy drinkability. Winemaker Mark Beringer likens it to the style of red wine he made in Knight's Valley between Napa and Sonoma. Dark cherries and plums lead the fruit parade, while a savoury balsamic note represents the desert scrub landscape. It is an impressive vintage poised to age effortlessly through 2028-2030.

The South Okanagan Phantom Creek Cab Franc comes from estate blocks on both sides of the valley: The fresher, vibrant red fruit and spice come from Kobau Vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench; while the warm, showy, generous black fruit are from the east side Black Sage Bench. It's the blending that creates the magic here, balancing the best of both worlds and giving this franc a spicy red fruit vibrancy and a plush texture all dusted with sagebrush. The alcohol is below 15% this year, helping with the drinkability. Serve with any dish you like, as nothing will be too big for this red, while it's young.

Lovely bouquet with ripeness of red berry fruits with a savoury earthy frame. Flavours of cherries and red plums, tart cherry and a strawberry compote idea. There’s a natural youthful tautness as the wine touches the palate - stemming from tannins and acidity, a contrast from red berry flavours and natural sweetness from oak and alcohol deliver contrast and style.
