Fattoria di Sammontana
The vineyards of Fattoria di Sammontana are located along the hills that border the Arno River, 20km to the south west of Florence. Today, the family - now in its fourth generation - runs the farm according to organic and biodynamic practices, with the intent to fully preserve and sustain the traditions and winemaking history of the land. The property and its 12th century Romanesque church, were once the property of the Medici family.

Their ultimate aspiration is to let nature speak through their wines, guided by ethical and qualitative principles that shape every decision. Since converting to biodynamic viticulture in 2006, their goal has been to make the vineyards more resilient, vital, and diverse. Embracing minimal intervention, all wines ferment spontaneously, often spending weeks on the skins and aging unadulterated on their lees, primarily in used wooden barrels. Time — whether weeks or years — plays the central role in shaping their character, allowing each wine to develop balance and a distinctive aromatic profile. Through careful observation and minimal influence, they remain committed to crafting authentic, genuine wines that faithfully reflect their origin.
Stéphane Aviron
Stéphane Aviron can be considered a pioneer in his approach to winemaking in Beaujolais, however he would just tell you that he’s simply returning to the traditional practices that have always made fantastic Gamay wines. Sustainable viticulture, extremely old vines and classic Burgundian techniques. He focuses on the Beaujolais village crus, all but forgotten gems of vineyards when the nouveau craze took over, which are the best sites for unique, expressive and terroir driven wines. All of the fruit is sourced from old vines (40+ years), so seeing Vieilles Vignes on the label is a rite of passage, not a privilege. Authenticity and a distinctly Beaujolais style of winemaking is what sets Stéphane apart from the rest.

The red 2022 Os Canivéis Tinto comes from a place that doesn't have enough ripeness for Port and therefore is classified as F. It's from a selection of small plots with soil that is in transition between schist and granite, planted with a field blend of Casculho, Cornifesto, Tinta Carvalha, Trincadeira Preta, Dozelinho Tinto, Tinta Aguiar, Mourisco, Alvarelhão, Aramón, Chancelar, Bastardo, Tinta Roriz, Mourisco de Semente, Moreto, Touriga Nacional, Malvasia Preta and Tinta Nevoeira. It fermented in lagar with 30% full clusters and matured in neutral barrels. It's pale, delicate and perfumed, with notes of wild flowers and herbs, and it has a stony sensation on the palate, with very fine, elegant tannins and great balance. It comes in at 12.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.65 and 4.8 grams of acidity. 2,100 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2024. He also makes a white from the same zone and with the same name.

The red blend 2023 Letra F comes from old vineyards classified with the letter "F" for the production of Port, the lowest grading, but nowadays possibly the best for table wines. They have identified up to 87 different grape varieties, red and white, and used up to 15% white grapes for this wine and 30% full clusters for the fermentation and then aged the wine in stainless steel for one year. It has a bright ruby color and a nose of berries, fruit and lots of herbs. It's a little balsamic, with moderate ripeness, 12.5% alcohol and a medium-bodied palate with fine tannins and vibrant flavours, very pleasant and easy to drink. 9,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2024.

Aged exclusively in stainless steel tank, Maçanita's 2021 Douro red pours a deep purple colour and delivers a raft of ripe, plush dark fruit, fig and plum, also some dried/desiccated fruit character. Tannins are soft and plush, acids also on the lower, riper side, conspiring to yield a full-bodied, round and voluptuous texture. It's a wine to enjoy now or over the near term, immediately accessible and enjoyable. Lots of pleasure here. Tasted September 2024.

Fantastic bouquet with the signature of soil and place showing first with aromas of stone and dry clay then a fine savoury dried herb voice. Next the fruit impacts of spiced plum skin and dark cherry skin then black currant berry and leaf. A dry wine on the palate, taut and with a firm squeeze of tannins and acidity then fruit - this wine will age for certain, there’s tension and texture from the tannins and acidity and gentle warmth from the abv. Finally, the core of fruit adds a plush mid-palate weight to round out the frame and finish. Best drinking from 2028/29 through 2036+.

About the Winery
Piazzo Comm. Armando
The story of the Piazzo winery began in San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, a small outlying district of the town of Alba, in the 1960s.
Two newly-weds from families of farmers, Armando Piazzo and Gemma Veglia, decided together to carry on their family traditions by investing in a special terroir – the Langhe – which at the time was not yet renowned for its premium foods and wines. As a matter of fact, with the hard times the farming community were experiencing following the Second World War, the Langhe then were the land of local writer Fenoglio’s “La Malora” (The Ruin), and somewhere to escape from. For the Piazzos however, this was all the motivation they needed in order to start their own business.
Their foresight then led them to invest in the varietal which today produces some of the most highly-prized wines in the world: Nebbiolo.
Over the course of the years, many plots of land were purchased and converted for the growing of the varietal. Then in 1979 the first wine was made from the grapes they had placed so much faith in, and three years later it was to bear the name Barbaresco.
When their daughter Marina and her husband Franco joined Armando and Gemma in the business, they fell in love with this wonderful venture which was gradually becoming more established, and with their enthusiasm improvements were made that culminated in 1985 with the release of their first Barolo: another source of pride for the Piazzo family.
Along with the cellar’s reputation, the estate also grew in size. Today the vineyards extend over more than 70 hectares (170 acres), mostly located near the winery itself, but some in other municipalities: Mango, Neviglie, Guarene and Novello.

This wine shows more structure and texture compared to the Argè. That wine was centered on floral aromas, but the Piazzo Comm. Armando 2021 Barbaresco Pajorè holds its aromas closer to the ground with tilled earth, pulverized stone and iris root. It remains bright and focused throughout. Matured in French oak, its ends on a silky note with sweet cherry. I would suggest giving it a little bit more time to age. This is a production of just 2,100 bottles and bigger formats.

Bideona
Bideona owns or manages over 300 parcels of extraordinary vines in villages throughout the Rioja Alavesa, the coolest, smallest and most Atlantic sub-zone of Spain’s most famous wine region.
The vineyards of the Rioja Alavesa are defined by parcels of old bush vines planted on terraces or hillside slopes with a high percentage of limestone. Located in the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria, Bideona’s vines have an average age of 50 years and many were planted in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, before high-yielding clones became available.
Bideona puts the focus firmly on terroir by making each wine in its Vino de Pueblo range as a field blend of Tempranillo and other native varieties from plots in an individual village. Each is named with an acronym – L3Z4 for Leza, L4GD4 for Laguardia, S4MG0 for Samaniego and V1BN4 for Villabuena – owing to DOCa Rioja regulations that only allow village names to be marked if both the winery and the vineyard are in the same location.

With its open, unassuming, and unguarded personality, this wine is a lovely entry-point into Biedeona's portfolio. I love the bright fruit flavours, red and dark, resinous herbs, wildflowers, and hints of pepper depicted here. The palate is medium bodied, with supple acidity and balanced, firming tannins. An herbal note lingers on the finish, closing off the delightfully expressive palate. I would enjoy this modern Rioja now or over the next couple of years in order to benefit from its youthful charm. Tasted January 2026.

Crisp with delicate floral aromatics, this wine shows the cool, higher-elevation “Alavesa” character, but with greater weight at 14% alcohol. Notes of violet, cherry, raspberry leaf, and pink peppercorn add charm. Juicy, youthful, and effortlessly stylish, both in the glass and in its packaging. Intriguing, satisfying - a not-so-guilty pleasure. Tasted January 2026.
