Two millennia of wine history in the Southern Rhône Valley has naturally created a selection of grape varietals well adapted to the Lirac region and its terroir: soil, landscape and climate. The Lirac appellation extends itself on the low hills alongside the river, just across the Rhone river from the beautiful vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Rodolphe de Pins, owner and winemaker at Chateau de Montfaucon, is very attached to the idea that they must conserve this natural heritage that is a true asset to their region. This evolution leads to well balanced and harmonious wines with a true identity of Rhône.
Since 2019, the winery team has been carefully farming the vines of Clos Bimard—a historic Châteauneuf-du-Pape clos once owned by the Marquis de Bimard. Bordered by woodland and located in the southwest of the appellation in the Bois de la Ville sector, the 3.5-hectare parcel overlooks the Rhône River and is planted with 60-year-old vines of Grenache, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre.
Layered aromas unfold in the glass, opening with dark notes of cherry and plum, accented by subtle hints of pepper and rosemary, evolving into nuances of dried fruit and lightly toasted nuts. On the palate, the wine is juicy and smoothly textured, with ripe, well-integrated tannins that frame flavours of black tea–infused fruit. The finish is accented by lightly candied orange zest and gentle toasty notes, hinting at promising complexity and further layered development with age. This cuvée captures the essence of this distinctive terroir with both finesse and intensity.
Suggested pairings include classics like roasted lamb studded with rosemary and garlic or grilled T-bone steak.
