Established in 2005, Domaine de Bellene is dedicated to crafting expressive wines from old vines, guided by a strong commitment to sustainable, organic farming. Under the stewardship of winemaker and proprietor of the late Nicolas Potel, the domaine has focused on producing wines that faithfully reflect both place and vintage, while safeguarding the land and its traditions for future generations. Today, Domaine de Bellene is widely respected among Burgundy enthusiasts for its thoughtful range of wines spanning both celebrated and lesser-known appellations.

Premier Cru Les Perrières, located between Les Cent Vignes, Les Bressandes, and Les Marconnets, was originally planted to Pinot Noir but is particularly well suited to Chardonnay. Bellene acquired and replanted the vineyard in 2013, with the inaugural vintage released in 2017.

The wine opens with pure aromas of stone fruit and fresh flowers, followed by a silky, savoury palate defined by a pleasing saltiness and iodine-tinged minerality. Racy, finely detailed, and distinctly stony through the mid-palate, it finishes clean, dry, and beautifully balanced, with the potential to gain additional depth and complexity with a few years of bottle age.

About the Winery

Groupe Bellene

Led by Nicolas Potel in Beaune, Groupe Bellene is composed of the négociant arm Maison Roche de Bellene, the winery arm Domaine de Bellene, and a special back-vintage series under the Collection Bellenum label.

  • Maison Roche de Bellene offers a complete range of wines, with an emphasis on individual terroirs from old vines of more than 40 years. All of the growers that Nicolas works with are either organic certified or sustainably farmed.
  • Domaine de Bellene represents the wines that are produced and bottled from Nicolas Potel's private vineyard holdings.
  • Collection Bellenum is a back vintage series that Nicolas Potel sourced from his friends in the region, offering a magnificent selection of bottled history. The wines have moved only twice in their lives, from the original cellar to Potel's and now to yours!

Nicolas Potel grew up at Volnay's Domaine Pousse d'Or, where his father worked. He trained abroad and returned home in 1996 to build a négociant business and started Maison Nicolas Potel, where he sourced grapes from good parcels, often working with the growers to improve the quality. By 2002, he was making 120 wines from 50 different appellations, and the rest is history!

95 Points - David Lawrason

From one more well known 1er cru sites in Beaune, this is a lovely, ripe, creamy and almost voluptuous chardonnay showing the warmth of the vintage. Expect complex and intriguing aromas of hazelnut, Boston cream pie, tarragon and toast and barrel spice. It is medium-full bodied, creamy, smooth, warm and powerful. Rich and seamless and refined, with a strong mineral seam running through the finish. The length is outstanding.

95 Points - Michael Godel

Historically a pinot noir plot in Beaune but Nicolas Potel made the decision in 2013 to go at it with chardonnay. Foresight is often better than hindsight and so his visionary 20-20 has gifted the world the beauty of fruit and stone intertwined from one of Bourgogne's increasingly important white sites. Vines just nine years old at this vintage and yet as experienced as those three to five times their age. A vintage like 2022 is ripe and less marginalized for chardonnay than for the pinot noir which means everything will shine and at the Premier Cru level there can be sheer greatness. Ripe grapes will have this effect and with chardonnay the excellence happens seemingly everywhere, from small plots to bigger and broader vineyards. This is a tiny one, just 0.2242 hectares and its play between fruit and acidity, extract and tannin is exceptional. The finishing bitters are an exquisite touch to an already blessed chardonnay. Drink 2025-2034.
