About the Winery
Pago Aylés

Pago Aylés was founded by Federico Ramón, who in 2003 began his dream of classifying this unique land as the first Vino de Pago in the Aragon region. In the Spanish wine quality pyramid, the Pago stands as a top tier or grand cru winery. Just before Federico died, his dream came true in 2010, as Aylés became the 10th Vino de Pago in Spain.
Today his three children continue to produce wines from this special land. The vineyard site has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 12th century by Spanish monks. Influenced by the River Huerva and the Monte San Pablo mountain, the soil is a mixture of clay, limestone and chalk – ideal for making high-quality wine. Caves, ravines and old river beds can be found all over the estate, which is brimming with wildlife.

Vintage 2020 - 90 points - John Szabo, MS
Deeply coloured and sweet-smelling, very ripe and sappy red blend from Aylés (merlot, garnacha, tempranillo and cabernet sauvignon), with a solid dose of sweet wood spice and jammy black fruit in an almost new world, California-like expression. The palate is soft and plush, immediately satisfying and inviting with its vague impression of sweetness, and supple, creamy tannins and acids and solid concentration. The finish lingers on espresso-mocha notes, though not in exaggerated fashion. A bold and satisfying, widely appealing wine all in all for current enjoyment or short term hold - this is all about the ripe fruit. Tasted March 2022.

Chateau Maucamps

Located in the Macau en Medoc region not far from the entry to the Margaux appellation. This chateau dates back to the 18th century and now covers 22.5 hectares planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) with Merlot making up 35% of the blend and Petit Verdot rounding out the classic blend with 5% of the final blend. Located near the Garonne River, the soils here are classic Garonne gravels with a clay sub-soil giving wines of classic mellow character with relatively smooth tannins and an elegant and fine structure making these wines remarkably consistent and approachable even in their youth. The vineyard is maintained under sustainable viticulture guidelines with an average age of vines around 35yo. Harvests are all done manually and vinification is quite classic: with temperature control capping the ferment temperature at 28c to retain freshness, total destemming, and regular pump-overs 3 times a day, the winemaking approach ensures gentle handling of fruit and a tendency towards finesse of tannins and structure. The percentage of new oak is kept to a minimum to ensure the fruit speaks clearly at all stages of the wines' long and graceful evolution. These are wines which typically age effortlessly for up to 20 years or more while also being enjoyable in their youth.

Always fun to have a gander backwards in Bordeaux, here from the 2008 vintage in the Macau en Médoc region near Margaux. The chateau dates back to the 1700s and this two-thirds to one-third cabernet sauvignon to merlot Haut-Médoc is quite youthful as compared to the 2006. A combination of reasons it would go to show, for one being two years apart and second a matter of comparative vintages. The ’06 is not one of greatest longevity while ’08 surely sneaks under the radar with aging capability. That said, as with the 2006, aeration causes a noticeable oxidation and decreased fruit energy. The wood still breathes, shows and exerts power, the secondary notes are in play but no real tertiary at this 13 year stage. Cool, mineral-licked, deeply resonant, roses and tar, even Cassis in its ethereal liqueur. Most definitely worth the price of admission, without a decant and a quick pour through six glasses. Drink 2021-2025.

About the Winery
Château Laronde Desormes
Winemaker Claude Gaudin has fashioned some exceptional wines from petits châteaux located along the Garonne River, bordering the Haut-Médoc appellation. His philosophy is simple: the wine is made in the vineyard. Dense plantation naturally reduces the yield per vine, resulting in a more concentrated wine. Traditional vinification and just the right touch of new oak give structure and added dimensions of flavor and complexity.

About the Winery
Leaning Post

A leaning post is what you find at the beginning of a row of grapes, anchoring the wires that are the frame-work for growing grapevines. It is the beginning of an obsession to translate a time and place into liquid. Leaning Post wines take you to that beginning by finding small, unique plots of land in Niagara and putting them in bottle. Because after stripping away all the fancy buildings and high-tech equipment you are left with a place on this earth that grows wine unlike any other. When you taste that in a glass you just know it. Nadia and Ilya have had to rely on the support of family, friends and financial institutions to make the dream of owning a winery a reality. Leaning Post began as a virtual winery and is so proud to now have the quaint tasting room at 1491 Hwy 8 on their home property in Winona, Ontario.
Ilya and Nadia are the brains and passion behind Leaning Post Wines. It started with a dream to take unique, interesting single vineyard blocks in Niagara and turn them into distinctive, terroir driven wines. Nadia and Ilya first met in their hometown of Winnipeg, MB where their passion for wine and each other was born.
Ilya has been a winemaker in the Niagara Region for the last 17 vintages working at Daniel Lenko Estate Winery, Foreign Affair and now at Leaning Post Wines. Ilya is also a consulting winemaker at the Good Earth Winery. Ilya’s true passion in life is to make world renowned wines from Niagara that really showcase the distinct terroir that Niagara offers.

Wines in Niagara
94 points - Rick VanSickle
The hits just keep on coming from the Bordeaux varieties which benefitted from the near-perfect growing season and long hang time in 2020. This Niagara Lakeshore Merlot is a wonder with intoxicating perfume on the nose followed by ripe raspberries and strawberries, purple plums, forest berries, floral notes and elegant spice notes. It has firm tannic structure on the palate that caresses the ripe and red and dark berries, cocoa, aniseed, fine oak spice notes on a finessed, lifted finish. A beauty that can cellar through 2024.
