Husband and wife winemaker team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux, set out with a shared vision to create authentic Swartland wines that reflect the distinct terroir of the region while embracing reasoned, sustainable farming practices and modern minimalist winemaking. Their commitment to quality and their deep respect for the environment and their employees have earned them acclaim both nationally and internationally, and has led to Mullineux being awarded South African Winery of the Year an unprecedented five times by the highly respected Platter’s Guide.

The Iron Chenin Blanc sees the highest natural extract of our three main Single Terroir white wines which lends to its upfront aromatics, a lower sugar-to alcohol conversion as well as focused acidity. During December, just before harvest, these deep clay soils retain water and inhibit excess moisture uptake in the berries which in turn enhances its concentration. Notable yellow orchard summer fruits, fresh orange peel and a slight flintiness welcome one on the nose, with a multi-layered palate and slightly saline finish that round off this beautifully textural wine.

About the Winery

Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines

Mullineux Family Wines, established in 2007 in the Swartland region of South Africa, is owned and managed by Chris and Andrea Mullineux. Since its inception the winery has established itself as one of South Africa’s most celebrated wine brands, both locally and internationally. Originally from Northern California, Winemaker Andrea Mullineux studied Viticulture and Oenology at UC-Davis before working in Stellenbosch and meeting Chris at a wine festival in Champagne. Chris is the Viticulturist in charge of the vineyards on their farm on Kasteelberg Mountain as well as fruit sourcing for their value Kloof Street wines.

The vineyards at Roundstone are farmed organically and are in the process of becoming Regenerative Organic certified. This involves practices like crop rotation, no-till farming, and eliminating chemical pesticides and fertilizers. These methods help rehabilitate soil, promote animal welfare, and improve farmers' livelihoods while sequestering carbon and producing healthier yields. In the winery, no additives are used aside from minimal sulfur dioxide, and all operations are IPW certified, following environmental best practices. Waste, including grape skins and lees, is recycled or repurposed, and cellar effluent is processed through an eco-friendly wetland system.

South Africa Special Report 2024

97 Points - Tim Atkin

Up there with the best-ever bottlings of Iron Chenin Blanc, this hails from a very windy site on red clay soils that is usually picked before the other two terroir-specific Mullineux bottlings. Grippy, ferrous, salty and intense, it has lots of extract, a hint of tannin, notes of citrus, lanolin and gunflint and a pithy, mouth-watering finish. Drink date: 2025-2030Exotic aromatics of orange, stonefruit, melon and pineapple plus a leesy note. The palate is rich and smooth textured despite a moderate alcohol of 13%. Tangy acidity lends balance while the palate is gently savoury
