About the Winery
Domaine Frédéric Brouca
Frédéric grew up in Normandy and met his Canadian wife Elaine at university in Lille, Northern France. They live a nomadic lifestyle (Canada, India, Singapore and USA) though Frédéric spends about half of his time in Faugères. Since early age, Frédéric had a calling for farming and the fierce desire to become a winegrower. After completing a Masters Degree in Finance in 2001, Frédéric went back to college for a Sommelier diploma and started his career as a Burgundy wine broker.
In late 2012, Frédéric and Elaine were fortunate to take over 25 acres of old vines in Faugères, organically farmed for twenty years and deeply rooted in schist soils.
2013 was the inaugural vintage for Domaine Frédéric Brouca. In his modest winery in the village of Laurens, Frédéric is creating a new vision for Faugères wines; fresh, vibrant and made without artifice. Nothing revolutionary, simply returning to our grandparent's ideology of farming and winemaking to craft 'Vins Vivants'. The Faugères Appellation is in the heart of Languedoc in the Hérault department. Here, winemaking dates back to the Greek times and was developed during the Roman Era. It wasn't until the early 1900's, however, that the wines became more widely known for its unique schist soils and moderate Mediterranean climate. These villages are heavily reliant on wine as an important part of their culture and economy.
The area is stunning with mountain views and close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea (20 miles / 30 kms). Faugères has a long history of responsible farming. It boasts the highest percentage of organic vineyards for any AOC in all of France with almost 50% of farmers making the choice.

A biodynamically-grown blend of grenache (40%), syrah (30%) and mourvèdre (30%) from the schist soils of the hilly, coastal appellation of Faugères. A low-interventionist style fermented spontaneously with 10 months of maturation in stainless steel vats and neutral oak. Clean and juicy with lively red fruit and hints of peppercorn, anise, pine needles, and juniper. Silky tannins and some warmth on the finish point to a riper vintage. Notably complex but effortlessly drinkable. Very good length.Tasted in magnum at Terroirs & Millésimes 2024.

About the Winery
Maison Idiart
Maison Idiart is a wine négociant based in Bordeaux and established in 2013. Nicolas Idiart, winemaker and founder of Maison Idiart, grew up with a passion for wine, something that he shared with his father and grandfather.
He graduated from Bordeaux winemaking school in Blanquefort at 19 years old. Nicolas' love for Loire wines took him to work in Chinon, Touraine and Muscadet. He also had experiences in Australia and New Zealand. After several years travelling the world, he decided to shift his work in the industry and work in sales, focusing in North America.
At 33 years old, after 7 years working in sales, he decided to go back to winemaking with an artisan approach, making small batches of handcrafted wines.

Tongue and cheek take on Picpoul de Pinet, labeled as “Poule de Pic,” a pecking hen picking at feed. The chicken’s varietal picpoul is a rich and viscous one, phenolic and platinum gold to suggest a few minutes more skin contact than the norm. Also suggestive of ripeness and another level of seriousness these wines don’t often make for the ambitious try. Tons of flavour, extract and even a spot of late appearing tannin. Brine a hen, prepare it as fried chicken and pair with some pickled peppers. Just don’t ask, if Peter Piper pickled a peck of poule di pic, where's the peck of poule de pic that Peter Piper pickled? Drink 2026-2028. Tasted February 2026.

This is a delectable picpoul de pinet, with notes of citrus and orchard fruit and apple blossoms. The real attraction here is the palate - I really like its texture. Fleshy and rounded, ripe and fruity, it has a pleasing impression of sweetness that is balanced by a hint of bitterness and lively acidity. Broadly appealing and easy-to-like, this is a relatively uncommon white wine that might spark conversation at a dinner party and should pair well with fried calamari or fish and chips. Tasted February 2026.

Samsó Seulle is varietal cinsault from 40-plus year-old bush vines on the 'La Serre' hill in Faugères. At the higher end for whole cluster ferments in the Fréderic Brouca range, here at 70 percent. Samsó is the local name for the grape and Brouca goes gentle and slow in his trenchant intention on how to deal with extracting without shock and awe. The grapes and thus the wine come out soft and “glissement,” even while the swarthy volatility runs knowably high. Brettanomyces yeasts are simply, allegedly and unequivocally part of the fabric but because flavours and textures are so pretty there is no chance of brittle or crumbly tannins. And so the overall effect is good, generous and proper. At least once in your lifetime your vinous imperative is to try a wine like this, especially from Brouca. Drink 2024-2028. Tasted January 2023.

Named "Samsó" the local name for cinsault (and phonetically very similar), Brouca's fruit is sourced from organically grown, old vine cinsault that is over 40 years of age. Often vinified with a good deal of whole-cluster giving the wine its necessary grip and then slowly matured in neutral vessels to preserve the varietal character. There is more wildness in this cuvée than many of Brouca's others, with a palate that is brimming with dried earth, wildflower, and fresh herbs, along with a touch of mushroom and musk. A notably pure expression of grape variety and features the concentration one might expect from a low-yielding drought vintage. Notes of cherry, fennel and licorice root permeate the finish of very good length. Best now to 2028. Tasted January 2024.

This is an organically grown single vineyard cinsault, a variety making paler, red fruited wines. It has a distinctive, soft ripe nose of strawberry jam, very floral lilac/peony, a touch of char and earth. There is also some meatiness expressed more on the palate. It is medium bodied, supple, warm and generous with slightly gritty tannin. Excellent fruit concentration and length. Tasted January 2024

Pure old vine cinsault (aka samsó) from the south of France, organically farmed and handled minimally, Brouca latest 2021 is a typically wild and vibrant, crunchy and juicy red declared at just 12.5% alcohol, part philosophy, part cooler, wetter vintage no doubt, and all the more lively for it. The palate is notably gritty with light but angular tannins bouncing off tingly acids, containing a mouthful of tart red fruit, from red currant to sour cherry, free from oak influence, but featuring lots of wild savoury herbs and twiggy flavours. The finish lingers surprisingly for such a light wine. Chill lightly and serve over the next 2-4 years. Authentic and honest; I like the lift and transparency. Tasted January 2024.

Domaine Baud Père et Fils
The history of Domaine Baud dates back to 1742, and it wasn't until 1950 when René Baud, the 7th generation, rebuilt the vineyard which had suffered from the phylloxera crisis and two World Wars.
Starting with only 4 hectares, the vineyard progressively expanded to 20 hectares with the help of successive generations. Now, managed by siblings Clémentine and Bastien, the 9th generation, the estate continues to flourish and grow, with a strong commitment to sustainable viticulture and preserving the traditions and style that makes the wines of the Jura so unique and incredible.
The estate achieved the Terra Vitis certification in 2014 for its eco-friendly work and environmental preservation.
Paddy Borthwick
Proudly family owned, the Borthwick vineyard is an established vineyard situated in Gladstone, the heart of the Wairarapa. Producing quality wine for over a decade, Paddy, an experienced wine maker, has gained a reputation for producing consistently great wines. The twenty seven hectares of vines bordering the Ruamahunga River are growing on stony, free draining, alluvial soils, with a micro climate giving warm daily temperatures, cool nights and low rainfall; perfect conditions for producing distinctive, quality wines.
In line with the family’s legacy of international trade, 90 percent of the wine is exported around the world. Paddy believes in sustainability and best practice within a vineyard, developing an asset for generations to come.

Zuani
Zuani winery is located in the heart of Collio, Friuli, a hidden appellation between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. Coming from a long tradition of winemakers in Croatia that goes back to the 19th century, Patrizia Felluga saw her dream come true when she acquired the estate and the vineyards in 2001. Today, her son and daughter have taken over the winery; producing exclusively white wines. Everything hinges on one exceptionally well exposed “cru”, or vineyard, on a gentle hillside where about eleven acres of vines and gardens surround the Zuani cellar.
The varietals planted are Tocai Friulano, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon, a carefully chosen range that produced the first vintage of Zuani Collio Bianco. The Zuani winery embodies the Felluga family winemaking heritage and expresses the fundamental unity of the traditional aspects of Friulian varieties with their more modern side.

About the Winery
Domaine Peter Sichel
Tucked away in a hidden valley in a remote corner of the Languedoc-Roussillon lies a truly special place: the village of Cucugnan. Historically, there was much wine produced here, given its isolated location, but gradually the local people moved away to the towns. There are now just 130 people living in the village. As the vineyards were left mostly abandoned, the local flora and fauna were permitted to thrive. Cucugnan became a unique area, full of biodiversity, which shines through in the rare plants and flowers that grow there today.
Peter Sichel (of the Bordeaux négociant family) first discovered this valley on a road trip with a friend in the 1960s. He was so spellbound by the place that he bought a house there and, in 1988, planted a vineyard. The project grew, albeit slowly, but the arrival of Peter’s thoughtful and environmentally inspired grandson, Alexander Sichel, has turned the Domaine Peter Sichel project completely around.
Since 2019, Alexander has converted the estate to organics and biodynamics, achieving organic certification in 2022. Furthermore, he is committed to supporting polyculture in and around the vineyards, even enlisting the help of a PhD programme from a Dutch university to identify the incredible array of plant life in the vineyard.
Alexander’s grandfather planted the vines between 30-40 years old. Parcels of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and Roussanne lie mostly on the best slopes of the valley. Starting from 350-500 metres’ altitude, these slopes have very little topsoil; the roots go almost straight into the bedrock. The viticultural team here has done much work to focus on the unique characteristics of each parcel to express the terroir of this stunning valley in the most authentic way.

This is a light red wine or perhaps a very dark rosé but either way it is charming in an unaffected, guileless way. Grapes are steeped in their skins for a short period of time, just 2.5 days, before they are pressed. The separated juice finishes fermentation in a small concrete tank. As the producer recommends, I would drink this wine over the next couple of years, while it is still young and fresh. I appreciate the clarity of fruit on the nose and palate here - red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, alongside fresh herbs. The palate is sprightly and flavourful, with impalpable tannins and cheerful acids, while the finish is long and perky. Tasted March 2025.

The follow-up Montanha to what was a most excellent 2023 representing the hills of Cucugnan. Lesser stature as grenache but only in relative terms when you consider the bigger and more impressive Terre Rouge. Works the clay and limestone terroir with Sichel’s infusion style of winemaking to modernize and prepare grenache in the most succulent way possible. As you will find here but also take note of the very modest 12.5 percent alcohol frame which feels even lighter and brighter in the early freshness of a wine indicative of 2024. Some will bemoan the lack of heft and stuffing while others will bask in the light, vim, relish and vigour of this transparent and trim varietal wine. Drink 2025-2028. Tasted March 2025.

The 2024 Montanha, "Mountain", sits somewhere between light red and deep rosé in colour like its predecessor, made as it is from a short 'infusion', 2.5 days, of unspecified ''mountain grapes'. ("raisins montagnards") grown in the heart of a wild, natural park with parcels surrounded by forests and biodynamic farming applied. The nose is open and fragrant, very fruity and pure, with lovely fresh strawberries and bright sour cherry flavours, also rose petals and orange peel, inviting and engaging. The palate is light and fresh but also flavourful, with impeccable balance and sapidity. A great project from the Sichel family to follow; drink or hold 2-3 years - this should turn nicely savoury in time. Tasted March 2025.

This is an ultra-pale grenache from old vines at high altitude. It has a fragrant, pretty nose of red rose, candied strawberry, wet stone and a touch of hay. It is medium-full bodied, quite, taut and lean yet very flavourful. Very firm and sour edged. The length is excellent. Tasted March 2025

This is a wine to pair with an evening of contemplation. Blackberry, black plum and dried black cherry swing dance in lockstep on the nose with an undercurrent of forest floor that lends added depth. Silky in texture, the wine flirts with Darjeeling tea and a dew-glistened earthy core that shines.
