Peter Sichel (of the Bordeaux négociant family) first discovered the valley of Cucugnan on a road trip with a friend in the 1960s. He was so spellbound by the place that he bought a house there and, in 1988, planted a vineyard. The project grew, albeit slowly, but the arrival of Peter’s thoughtful and environmentally inspired grandson, Alexander Sichel, has turned the Domaine Peter Sichel project completely around.

Terre Rouge is a single vineyard wine made from 100% Grenache. Set at an impressive altitude of 500m, this organically grown gem thrives in clay-laden marl soils, with its farmers diligently pursuing biodynamic certification.

Harvested by hand on October 3, 2022, the grapes underwent a gentle vinification process with 40% whole bunch fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and was aged for 12 months in foudres.

On the nose, it reveals vibrant aromas of red fruits and wild strawberries, while the palate showcases a fine and elegant structure that unfolds into a beautifully expressive and lengthy finish. 

With a delightful roundness maintaining freshness and subtle toasty notes, this Grenache is a superb companion for hearty rib of beef and spicy dishes, offering a promising evolution that delights with each passing year.

This is an incredibly suave, elegant and delicious grenache with bags of sweet fruit, but never sinking into soupiness. It is from 100% organically grown old vines grown in clay-marl mountain soils. Expect a gentle wave of candied red fruits, fine white pepper, spice and fresh herbs. It is medium weight, almost silken in texture, with equally dispersed warmth, sweetness and tension. Tannins are a bit firm (age it two years?). The length is outstanding. Tasted January 2025

Such lovely fragrance and perfume here from this pure grenache from the Terre Rouge parcel at c. 500m elevation, a standout from the excellent Sichel range, certified organic and in conversion to biodynamics. The palate is so juicy, succulent and well balanced, smooth and supple but energetic and lively. Saliva rains down on the palate from salinity and umami, while tannins are fine and light, a total paradigm shift from the often heavy and alcoholic versions produced in many parts of the Rhône Valley, here carrying 14.5% alcohol with style and grace. I admire the delicacy, finesse and balance, and the exceptional length. Biodynamic farming on a clearly prime piece of terroir, a beauty, and such a happy new discovery for me. Best from 2026. Terre Rouge suggest red soils, or clay terroir rich in an element like iron, always great for syrah and here for grenache. The source is Sichel’s appellative “monopole” of Cucugnan IGP inside southerly Corbières and yet so opposite as a style to that of the carignan. Bigger, grander and fruitier, with quite an increase in alcohol (to 14.5 percent) that seems more inline with a Languedoc red. That said the grape and its terroir enact the truth and that would be for a more obvious, what you see is what you get red. Mystery, subtlety and fantasy are not part of the plan or mix and still this is intriguing stuff. Also the kind of red to appeal to lovers of the Southern Rhône, especially Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe, equally gorgeous if also less complicated. Drink 2026-2032. Tasted January 2025.

This captivating grenache hails from a distinguished site at 500 meters above sea level, where clay soils are embraced by the surrounding forest. Richer in hue than its lighter blended counterpart, Cucuniano, the Terre Rouge offers an alluring and expressive aromatic profile. Beyond its fragrant notes of red berries and soy, the palate reveals deeper layers of black fruits, tinged with hints of licorice. It stands out with a notable sapidity and a more defined structure than the norm, its tannins angular yet refined, offering an elevated sense of depth. Excellent length. Organic and biodynamic certifications are underway. Tasted January 2025.
