At the Southerly point of Africa, along the Cape South Coast is the coolest wine region - Elgin. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean at an altitude of 450m along the Southern ridge lies the unique Iona vineyards surrounded by the Unesco certified Kogelberg Biosphere. Iona's approach is hands off and the land is farmed according to organic and biodynamic practices with a particular focus on ensuring the health of the soils whilst pests are kept under control by the resident flock of geese that roam the vineyards.

The One Man Band represents the notion of constant endeavour – the role of the musician bravely playing his many instruments is a reminder of the distinct vineyards and endeavour dedicated to growing the various varietals that are meticulously blended each year making this focussed and harmonious cool-climate red blend. This wine reveals peppery spice and velvety tannins, with layers of bramble and black cherry fruit.

Pair this unique red blend with a variety of dishes, including pork belly and braised chicken, pasta marinara, grilled aubergine and portabella mushrooms .

About the Winery

Iona Vineyards

"THE WINEMAKER IS THE CUSTODIAN OF THE FRUIT"

Iona is planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. We have invested in state-of-the-art equipment such as the latest Willmes Press, Bucher Delta Oscillys de-stemmer. A deep trust in the way we farm, lends us to adopt natural winemaking practices in the cellar with minimum use of sulphur, commercial yeasts, enzymes, and filtration. We aim to make wines that portray the uniqueness of each vintage celebrating a true sense of place without overplaying the winemaking hand.

People are an integral part of our success. We have 20 families living on the farm with up to 35 years of service. All vineyard practices are done by hand. Workers are shareholders and receive pension funds, education and social support.

93 Points - David Lawrawson

This is an unusual blend of syrah, edgy yet fragrant petit verdot and mourvedre with some viognier to add cush. It has a generous, quite rich and compelling nose of plum/blackberry jam, deep hibiscus florality, gentle clove and peppery spice and vanilla. It is full bodied, broad and hefty with alcohol power and warmth, firm but not austere tannin (thanks to the PV) and MV) and all kinds of spice and garrigue on the finish. Excellent to outstanding length. This is really well designed if on the fringe for some.
