At the southerly point of Africa along the Cape South Coast, Elgin stands out as the coolest region for wine production. Situated 450 meters above sea level on the southern ridge overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, lies Iona vineyards, surrounded by the UNESCO-certified Kogelberg Biosphere. Here, a unique microclimate is shaped by the close proximity to the freezing Atlantic Ocean and rapid altitude rise. Misty clouds shield the vineyards from intense sun exposure, filtering the sunlight to promote slow ripening. This results in grapes with perfect acidity, moderate alcohol, and beautifully developed flavours.

Iona's vineyards are meticulously tended by hand using organic and biodynamic methods, prioritizing soil health and integrated pest management. This philosophy extends to their cellar practices, where minimal intervention is required thanks to the exceptional quality of their fruit.

The Elgin Highlands Sauvignon Blanc displays beautiful purity of limes and ripe gooseberry, with tropical, floral and fine herbal notes, ruby grapefruit and white pear drop on the finish. This is cool climate Sauvignon Blanc – vibrant, mineral, elegant, balanced and delicate, with a long, layered and complex finish.

Try with garlic prawns or other lightly cooked shellfish.

About the Winery

Iona Vineyards

"THE WINEMAKER IS THE CUSTODIAN OF THE FRUIT"

Iona is planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. We have invested in state-of-the-art equipment such as the latest Willmes Press, Bucher Delta Oscillys de-stemmer. A deep trust in the way we farm, lends us to adopt natural winemaking practices in the cellar with minimum use of sulphur, commercial yeasts, enzymes, and filtration. We aim to make wines that portray the uniqueness of each vintage celebrating a true sense of place without overplaying the winemaking hand.

People are an integral part of our success. We have 20 families living on the farm with up to 35 years of service. All vineyard practices are done by hand. Workers are shareholders and receive pension funds, education and social support.

92 Points - David Lawrason

This is a generous sauvignon with real presence and some poise as well. It shows a very lifted nose of well integrated pineapple, evergreen/mint, lemon and grapefruit. All comes together very well on the palate with substance, warmth and freshness supplied by a hint of spritz. The length is excellent.
