Flinty & Fresh

This product is available through the LCBO as a special offer beginning March 14th at 8:30am . Wines purchased on pre-release will ship in mid to late March.

Francisco Baettig and Carlos de Carlos cut their teeth in the wine industry as part of the well known Errázuriz operation, where they worked together for many years. Inspired by their mutual love of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the talented enologist and savvy businessman branched out to create Vinos Baettig. Produced in small batches and sold as limited editions to selected buyers, their wines have swiftly become some of the most interesting & highly lauded among the emerging talents of Chile.

The grapes come from a combination of parcels at Viñedo Los Suizos, grown in the region of Malleco. This is a land of wild forests, beautiful lakes, active volcanoes and abundant rain in southern Chilean. 'Los Parientes' (the relatives) refers to the closeness of the different components within the same vineyard.

The nose is austere, pure and elegant with citrusy aromas of lemon and lime zest and hints of linden, verbena, pear, apple blossoms and slivered almonds. The palate reveals flinty mineral notes along with a delicate, chalky texture and crunchy fruits. This a linear wine with vibrant acidity and a long salt-tinged finish.

Cool climate Chardonnays such as this are highly versatile alongside many dishes thanks to their elevated acidity. Try this one out with yogurt-marinated grilled chicken.

About the Winery

Vinos Baettig

Francisco Baettig and Carlos de Carlos have been friends for more than 20 years and share a passion for high-quality wines that are genuine and connected to the land where they are made.

Their families arrived in Traiguén and Purén from Switzerland in the 19th century, where they worked in agriculture, surrounded by volcanoes, lakes and forests, silos, livestock, wagons, and wheat fields.
Francisco and Carlos' passion for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, together with their love for the land of their ancestors, was the inspiration for making their own wines that pay homage to these beloved terroirs. After studying the soil and climate in Traiguén for several years, they chose a plateau with volcanic soil between the Quino and Traiguén Rivers and planted vines in 2013.

"A promising project in a wine region that is the future of high-quality Chilean wines" - Patricio Tapia, Descorchados

95 Points

A different style to the previous vintage of Los Parientes. This shows nimbler, more lime-like white and green fruit with green apples, nectarines, green tea and some chamomile. Very cool, taut and vibrant with bright, mouthwatering acidity. Great texture and elegance. Think serious Chablis in terms of style. Drink or hold.

94 Points - Luis Gutiérrez

The 2021 Vino de Viñedo Los Parientes Chardonnay reflects the cooler year with even lower alcohol, 13%, and higher acidity (8.25 grams of tartaric acid per liter of wine). It was harvested the second half of April, which is very late for the region, as it's usually harvested in early April, which meant a slow and thorough ripening of the grapes. The difference with 2018 is that the end of the season was dry and the grapes were healthy and got a better development of aromas and flavors. There are no differences in the work in the winery: pressing of the full clusters, native fermentation in French barriques and 10 months of élevage. Pristine, fresh, chiseled and elegant, with purity and harmony, austere and dry, there's no room for sweetness here (or anywhere at this address!). It has integrated oak and is vibrant and salty. A bargain for the quality. 16,909 bottles were filled in January 2022.
