Founded by visionary winemaker Eben Sadie, Sadie Family Wines is a leading South African estate built on the philosophy that winemaking begins with responsible agriculture and a deep relationship with the land. Based in the Swartland, the domaine is committed to farming practices that prioritize long-term environmental stewardship, sustainability, and respect for terroir.

The estate farms approximately 51 hectares, including 24 hectares of its own vineyards alongside additional parcels cultivated by the Sadie team. Yields are intentionally kept low to ensure concentration and quality. Guided by the belief that great wine emerges from a close relationship between soil, climate, vines, and people, Sadie Family Wines has earned international recognition for producing expressive, terroir-driven wines that capture the character of South Africa’s vineyards while maintaining a strong commitment to responsible farming and environmental stewardship.

Columella is a masterfully crafted blend of Mediterranean red varieties, selected for their affinity with the soils and oceanic climate of the Swartland. Composed of nine small, distinctive vineyard parcels, the wine captures the essence of the region, serving as a true ambassador of Swartland terroir.

The 2023 vintage is a deeply layered blend, shaped by Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsaut, Tinta Barocca, and Pinotage, which lend both depth and complexity to the tannins while enhancing fruit purity and freshness on the palate. The wine opens with aromas of strawberry that evolve into dark cherry and floral perfume, with hints of violet emerging over time. Compact and focused, this vintage is firmer and grippier than the last, with a deep, centred structure. With its precise tannin dynamics and linear expression of terroir, the wine rewards patience and careful cellaring.

98 Points - Claire Nesbitt, Deputy Tasting Editor

Black cherries, fresh plums, sandalwood, peach pits, sage and cloves on the nose of this deliciously polished and complex red. It’s medium- to full-bodied, intense yet full of finesse and elegance, with firm and very fine-grained tannins. Long, continuous and delicious, with a beautiful interplay of fruit and spice. I love this wine. Syrah, mourvedre, grenache, carignan, cinsault, tinta barocca and pinotage. Drinkable already but better after a couple of years.

96 Points - Neal Martin

The Columella is the usual blend of seven varieties. It has quite an intense bouquet, with a mixture of red and black fruit, cigar box, potpourri and a light sea influence. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine-grained tannins, gentle grip, beautifully balanced, with a long and tender finish. Just wonderful transparency to this Columella that will give many years of drinking pleasure. Snapping at the heels of the best Sadie has made.
