Founded in 1974 by Valentino Migliorini, a Michelin-starred restaurateur with a visionary approach to winemaking, Rocche dei Manzoni quickly became a pioneer in the Langhe. Valentino introduced groundbreaking innovations such as the first Nebbiolo-Barbera blend (Bricco Manzoni), the use of small oak barrels, and traditional method sparkling wines—well ahead of his time. Today, under the direction of his son Rodolfo, the estate continues its legacy of experimentation and precision, producing acclaimed Barolo, innovative blends, and sparkling wines that showcase both tradition and forward-thinking spirit.

The Pianpolvere Soprano Bussia project began in 1998 with the purchase of this historic Monforte d’Alba vineyard. Under Rodolfo's careful stewardship and commitment to the sustainable Green Experience program, the estate crafts two Barolos of authentic character from this single site: Barolo Pianpolvere Soprano Bussia DOCG, first released in 2016 to critical acclaim, and Barolo Pianpolvere Soprano Bussia Riserva DOCG, produced only in exceptional vintages.

The bouquet of the '08 is elegant and beautifully refined, revealing aromas of freshly crushed wild berries, violet, forest floor, and subtle hints of resin, complemented by a delicate balsamic note that lingers despite its years of bottle age. On the palate, mineral undertones lead into a vibrant, finely textured wine with impressive freshness, a rounded mouthfeel, and lingering savoury complexity. A subtle umami character emerges on the finish, carrying through the persistent aftertaste and inviting another sip.

The Wine Advocate

94 points - Monica Larner

Packaged in an extremely thick and heavy bottle, the 2008 Barolo Riserva Bussia is a densely layered expression of Nebbiolo with broad aromas of black fruit, prune and exotic spice. The grapes are macerated on the skins for 21 days, and the wine is later aged in barrique for 36 months. The oak imprint is indeed strong, and you will recognize tones of clove, cinnamon and smoked cedar wood. You will taste oak-related sweetness as well and tight tannins at the back. The softer and more accessible side of the wine comes from its aged tertiary aromas of licorice and balsam herb.
