Founded in 1974 by Valentino Migliorini, a Michelin-starred restaurateur with a visionary approach to winemaking, Rocche dei Manzoni quickly became a pioneer in the Langhe. Valentino introduced groundbreaking innovations such as the first Nebbiolo-Barbera blend (Bricco Manzoni), the use of small oak barrels, and traditional method sparkling wines—well ahead of his time. Today, under the direction of his son Rodolfo, the estate continues its legacy of experimentation and precision, producing acclaimed Barolo, innovative blends, and sparkling wines that showcase both tradition and forward-thinking spirit.

Sourced from several south-facing, estate-owned vineyards in Monforte d’Alba cultivated with Nebbiolo and Barbera. The calcareous-sandy soil yields wines with great structure and exceptional roundness. While this bottling is highly regarded in its own right, the 2008 vintage is particularly compelling for Nebbiolo, with the late harvest and cool, sunny growing season delivering an especially complete and classical expression of the grape.

Celebrated for its aromatic richness and refined elegance, the '08 Big d’Big opens with striking intensity on the nose. The bouquet unfolds in layered notes of violet and rose petals, followed by hints of lightly roasted nuts and dates, evolving into accents of blood orange and rhubarb. On the palate, it is both structured and graceful, with silky tannins and a pronounced savoury-mineral edge that runs alongside flavours of black and blue fruit, carrying through to a long, expressive finish.

The Wine Advocate

93 Points - Antonio Galloni

The 2008 Barolo Big ‘d Big is a dark, inward wine. Smoke, licorice, tobacco and smoke add complexity to the seriously intense core of dark red fruit. This is the most muscular and sinewy of the 2008 Baroli from Rocche dei Manzoni. The Big doesn’t have the early appeal of some of the other wines, but it should age quite well. The sheer integrity of the fruit is striking, as is the huge, dramatic finish. Hints of iron and tar linger in the empty glass. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.
