A small family winery (Mike, Gale, Amanda, Angela and Matt) that produces Rhône-style red and white wines from two vineyard properties in the Walla Walla Valley. They produce wines only from varietals that they love and farm themselves. From their first vintage in 2007, the wines have been remarkable with a consistent complexity, depth of flavour, finish and distinctive terroir. Almost everything they do is by hand, planting each vine in the vineyards, trellising, pruning, dropping fruit and then picking and sorting the berries at harvest.

The “Foothills in the Sun” vineyard is at the base of the Blue Mountains on the Washington/Oregon border. The vineyard is planted with Syrah, Viognier, a little bit of Cabernet Sauvignon and is one of the highest elevation vineyards in Washington. The soils consist of deep silty loam, with small amounts of clay, iron and pockets of rocks.

Expect to find savoury notes of wild game, morel mushrooms, rare meats and black and white pepper on the nose. There is a warmth of terroir to this wine, revealing whiffs of ripe black fruits, dried sweet herbs and black olive tapenade which flow into the lengthy finish. This is a modern wine that speaks to the classic, old world style which will last in bottle for years to come.

Ideal with braised, herb spiced venison.

The Foothills Reserve is a selection of 100% Syrah barrels from the vineyard surrounding the Reynvaan winery and has always been one of my favorites of the lineup. Displaying a stunning deep purple in the glass with a silver rim, aromas of blue plum, boysenberry, black raspberry, dried mint, graphite, smoked brisket, and green olive pop from the glass. It’s incredibly complex, powerful but elegant at the same time and is one of those wines you have to experience to fully comprehend. The nose is so intriguing, you almost forget to take a sip but when you do you are greeted with flavors of black cherry, boysenberry, purple flower petals, crushed black olive and black pepper. You don’t get the funk you do from the Rocks Vineyard wines, which is polarizing for some consumers, but you do get a balanced, structured, absolutely phenomenal Syrah that is expertly crafted. If you are new to Washington State Syrah, this would be my recommended bottle to buy and cellar for a decade or more. Highly recommended.
