Hans Herzog is a unique story – A man that is a true vigneron and in sole control of the winemaking and viticulture of so many different grape varieties within his 11.5 hectare vineyard. A rare individual who lives and breathes his estate, releasing only the highest quality wines, which are 100% handcrafted from his own vines.

His is a true artisan wine estate where a holistic approach to farming is not just a phrase but a way of life. Absolutely everything is done by Hans himself with the help of equally passionate people including his wife, confidante and collaborator Therese, who supports him in his relentless drive for quality and perfection.

This dark, richly textured Pinot shows off with intense, luscious aromas of dark fruit, violet and warm spices. Magnificent blend of allure and complexity, deep and earthbound. Sumptuous and silky structure with a savoury acidity. In the style of Burgundy’s greatest varietal: refined elegance, defined with an ample finish, highlighting its aging potential

Pinot Noir has the ability to easily match many different dishes. Try with poultry, pasta dishes and casseroles, to name a few.

The Real Review

95 Points - Bob Campbell

Deeply scented pinot noir with intense cassis, dark cherry/berry, vanilla and classy French oak flavours. Bright, youthful wine with power and energy. Accessible now but with good cellaring potential.

91 points - Michael Godel

An unfined, unfiltered and vegan pinot noir that has seen much aging and resting, 24 months in barriques, followed by 24 more in bottle. Expressly Marlborough though with a tisane twist, like the tannic and citric child of Rooibos and Orange Pekoe. Great depth involved, full on varietal inhalant of pinot noir stereotype and something that commands aromatic plus palate stung attention. Big wine, chewy and leathery, with notable verdancy, tobacco leaf and wld grasses. Drink 2023-2026. Tasted June 2023.

91 points - John Szabo, MS

Herzog's 2018 pinot pours a relatively deep colour and displays ripeness and concentration above the mean, a rather fleshy and broad wine based more on power than perfume, fulsomeness rather than finesse. Fruit runs towards the darker spectrum for the variety, and tannins take on a wooly quality. Depth and concentration are undeniable, and ambition is high, in a more new world idiom all in all. I'd cellar another 2-3 years for more complexity and textural development. Tasted June 2023.

90 points - David Lawrason

This is a seriously conceived and rendered pinot noir from an historic property in the hills on the western edge of the Wairau Valley. All organic, natural fermentation with no fining and filtration. And that attention shows up nicely in the effortless balance and texture. The aromatics are reserved but complex with well woven cherry, hummus, fine oak spice and forest floor. It is medium weight, warming and spicy with fine, firm tannin and excellent length. Tasted June 2023
