Great Heart is the staff empowerment project of Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, known for their multi-award winning Leeu Passant and Mullineux wineries. Aimed at improving the livelihoods of those who work for the company as well as their families, the Great Heart wine brand is collectively owned by the winery staff and a portion of all sales under this label go directly to them.

Grapes for the 2020 Chenin Blanc came from two sustainably farmed vineyard parcels of dry land, bush vine Chenin grown in the decomposed Granite soils of the Paardeberg mountain in the Swartland. Vines here are up to 40 years old.

This Chenin has a nose of green and yellow citrus, stone fruit and hint of flint. The palate has lovely texture with a full mouthfeel typical of the Swartand. This is balanced by a vibrant acidity and some pithy character. The wine has a fresh, mineral finish. Drinking beautifully now and over the next 5 years.

Pairs well with seafood, poultry, salads and even slightly spicy dishes. This wine is vegan friendly!

About the Winery

Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines

Mullineux Family Wines, established in 2007 in the Swartland region of South Africa, is owned and managed by Chris and Andrea Mullineux. Within a very short time period the winery established itself as one of South Africa’s most celebrated wine brands, both locally and on the international front. Growing up in Northern California, Winemaker Andrea Mullineux studied Viticulture and Oenology at UC-Davis before working in Stellenbosch and meeting Chris at a wine festival in Champagne. Chris is the Viticulturist, in charge of the vineyards on their farm on Kasteelberg Mountain as well as fruit sourcing for their value Kloof Street wines.

To add to their acclaim, Andrea Mullineux was named Wine Enthusiast’s Winemaker of the Year in 2016. By focusing on producing handcrafted wines from the granite and shale based soils of the Swartland and it is quickly becoming South Africa's wine frontier. Located an hour's drive away from Stellenbosch, the Swartland is rolling hills of wheat and jagged outcrops of old vines.

I've reported on this philanthropic project of Mullineux and Leeu family wines called Great Heart before, a staff empowerment project the results and profits of which are aimed at improving the circumstances of staff and their families. But good feel aside, the wines are really exceptional, especially in terms of value; this chenin is seamless and fresh, well-balanced, flavourful, with a gently creamy-leesy finish. There's no need to sacrifice moral ethics for pleasure in this case - everything lines up nicely. Drink or hold short term. Tasted September 2021.
