Nestled at the foot of the hillside in Aloxe-Corton, Château Corton Frey stands as one of Burgundy’s most iconic landmarks. Built in the late 19th century atop 15th-century cellars, this historic estate is the region’s most photographed site after the Hospices de Beaune. Legend holds that Emperor Charlemagne once owned vineyards here in the 8th century, planting Chardonnay to preserve the whiteness of his beard.
The estate’s seven hectares span thirteen prestigious appellations, forming part of Burgundy’s intricate mosaic of climats, where the expression of terroir has been honed over centuries. Under the ownership of Caroline Frey, a highly regarded oenologist and winegrower, Château Corton Frey brings together Burgundian tradition with a sustainable, precision-driven philosophy. With intentionally limited production, each wine is crafted to reflect the purity and character of its origin.
The 'Pauland' vineyard is divided into Grand Cru, Premier Cru, and Village plots, taking its name from the Old French word pol, meaning “pond” or “mud,” a nod to the area’s former marshes.
This 1er Cru rendition boasts a beautifully deep ruby hue and an exquisite aromatic profile, notably centred on a well-defined core of Morello cherry. The palate delivers in equal measure, seamlessly bringing together polished tannins with careful oak that that underscores the ripeness of the fruit and its still-tangy acidity—all without ever feeling heavy. Captivating right to the last drop.
