Citrusy & Mineral

Ricardo Carreiro founded Coto de Gomariz in the seventies, when he managed to return to his land after emigrating to South America like so many other Galicians. His dream was to make wines and restore Gomariz's prestige as a historical vineyard. Known as the "Golden Mile" of the Ribeiro since the 10th century, Gomariz is the oldest Viticultural Reserve in the Iberian Peninsula and has exceptional characteristics for growing grapes.

The eponymous white Coto de Gomariz has the moss and river stones character that is the giveaway of a white Ribeiro. It's a classical blend of 70% Treixadura and the rest Godello, Albariño and Loureira. Twenty percent of the volume spent 10 months in used 500- and 600-liter oak barrels, but the difference here is the natural energy and concentration of the wine; it's a lot more powerful than many of the high-yielding whites from the zone.

It's characterful and has power and balance, keeping the freshness and focus. On the nose, it is lively, mineral, citrusy, floral and gingery. On the palate is also silky and delivers flavours of orange zest, lemon pith and bitter quince.

Enjoy this white with scallops or cod. It will also pair very nicely with poultry.

The balance of the 2020 Coto de Gomariz is slightly different from the 2019 that I also tasted. Here, there's more ripeness and alcohol but also more acidity and a touch of residual sugar, so the mouthfeel is tender and approachable with pungent flavors and a long finish. 30,000 bottles produced.
