About the Winery
Oenops

Founded in 2015, Oenops, meaning ‘wine face’, is a pioneering project whose mastermind is the talented winemaker Nikos Karatzas. Following the micro-négociant system, Oenops aims to produce high quality, great value wines. Rather than owning vineyards, the company sources grapes from selected plots across Greece’s best terroirs, with a focus on cool-climate sites and old vines of indigenous varieties.
At the core of the company’s philosophy is the close partnership with ambitious growers who share a same sustainability-focused approach. Oenops mission is to source great fruit and craft wines that fully express its quality and sense of time and place. By using simple methods, led by the profile of the grapes rather than by any winemaking protocols, the company has built a range of authentic, fruit-forward wines that bring out the best of each variety, terroir and style.
The team tastes meticulously and tailors its approach to each plot and variety, based on the core philosophy and ethos. By vinifying each plot and variety separately the team has grown an understanding of the specificity of each vineyard and of the work done each year, in turn allowing for improvement in each vintage.
A repertoire of indigenous grape varieties, such as Malagousia, Assyrtiko, Vidiano, Roditis, Xinomavro, Limniona, and Mavroudi, is expressed through different styles of Greek varietal wines and in labels that have gained widespread recognition, among consumers and critics alike.
What the team at Oenops strives for is, ultimately, to produce tasteful, elegant wines that work as perfect companions to every meal and special occasion.

Lovely, fresh aromatics lead off the top, a sort of straight-from-the-vat freshness and fruitiness, with the floral and stone fruit, peach/apricot notes of malagouzia on full display, allied to the firm acids and structure of assyrtiko. Flavour intensity and density is very impressive in the price category, as is length - this is serious, and enjoyable wine, another 5-star value. Tasted March 2025.

This is an intriguing blend of three white grape varieties – malagousia, vidiano, and assyrtiko. It is aromatic and engaging, with notes of plush stone fruit and ripe orchard fruit. The fruit flavours are radiantly clear here which I find very appealing, while the palate has an enticingly glossy texture, supported by crisp acidity. Assyrtiko leaves its mark on the finish, which is long and zesty. Tasted March 2025.

The 2021 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru has a pleasant light apple blossom and wet stone-scented bouquet that gradually opens with aeration. The palate is taut and fresh with crisp green apple, pear a touch of lemon rind, and a gentle grip with a nicely composed, if not lengthy, finish. Enjoy this over the next decade.

Land of Hope

The Land of Hope Trust project started in 2007. Initiated against the background of many “smoke and mirrors” projects purporting to uplift Previously Disadvantaged Individuals (PDI), although very few of which seem to genuinely do so. The direct and sole beneficiaries of this Trust are the previously disadvantaged individual employees of Radford Dale and their children and dependents.
What makes this project unique? Well, the primary objective of the trust is educational. The long-term social upliftment through the gift of high quality education, skills development and the power of developing knowledge. The Trust is making it possible to send Land of Hope employees' children to schools they could only dream about when they were young, which they were not allowed to attend, and which will give the next generation the intellectual ability and the expertise to ensure the positive evolution of our economy their democracy and community.

This remains one of the best chardonnays from Chile from a warm year. Aromas of fine brioche, sourdough bread, minerals, lemon zest, oyster shells and a floral touch. Taut and medium- to full-bodied on the palate, with a beautiful texture and a fresh streak of acidity that's not too demanding. Flinty and really long. It spent 13 months in French oak barrels, with 28% new wood. 6,000 bottles made. Drink or hold.

Kellerei Bozen - Cantine Bolzano

Cantina Bolzano, based in the town of Bolzano, traces its roots to two of Alto Adige’s most historic cooperatives: Santa Magdalena, est. 1930 and Cantina Gries, est. 1908. After deciding to merge in 2001, Cantina Bolzano was created. Bolzano is located in the middle of a valley basin surrounded by hilly vineyards that grow from 200 meters above sea level up to 1000. North and south meet in this valley, and the sun warms the stony soils with its pronounced diurnal temperatures, protecting the vines from the cold.
The average growers’ plots in Sudtirol averages only approx. 1 hectare, and the area, with its famed reputation and steep slopes, is an expensive area to farm. The member of Bolzano (approx. 300 in all) own many of the best vineyards throughout the region, including the Valle Isarco, and pool their resources to create top quality wines. And while no grower is certified organic, many practice organic viticulture and all of them adhere to natural practices in their vineyards. Most growers have lived on their farms with their families for generations. They protect their land and cultivate their vineyards as they have done for generations with total respect of the environment where they live.

Heinrich Winery believes great wines express a true sense of place — something best achieved when vines thrive within a biologically diverse environment where soil vitality and natural symbiosis are preserved. Their ultimate aspiration is to let nature speak through their wines, guided by ethical and qualitative principles that shape every decision. Since converting to biodynamic viticulture in 2006, their goal has been to make the vineyards more resilient, vital, and diverse. Embracing minimal intervention, all wines ferment spontaneously, often spending weeks on the skins and aging unadulterated on their lees, primarily in used wooden barrels. Time — whether weeks or years — plays the central role in shaping their character, allowing each wine to develop balance and a distinctive aromatic profile. Viñátigo

Juan Jesús is a proud native of Tenerife and the fourth generation of growers. During the thirty years that he's overseen Bodegas Viñátigo, he has considerably increased its holdings, planting varieties that he and his team recuperated from near extinction.
Driven by passion and love for his homeland, Juan decided to revive and work to save the native grape varieties that were brought to the Canary Islands by the conquers back in the 15th century and that had survived on the islands for centuries. He is a hero of contemporary Canarian viticulture. The wealth of knowledge that his work has created has helped underpin the significant expansion of wine styles that are now available throughout the archipelago, and his wines have achieved a calibre of class that many doubted the Canaries would ever produce again. (The Epic Wines of the Canary Islands, written by Santo Bains).

The 2022 Lomo de la Era, another of the new single-vineyard certified wines from the DOP Islas Canarias, Tenerife appellation, was produced with Listán Blanco grapes, in this case from a cordón trenzado plot of vines in the western part of the Orotava Valley on sandy, silty and basalt soils. The juice from the pressing with part of the stems was let to settle and fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete, where the wine matured with static lees (not stirred) for nine months. It has moderate ripeness and alcohol (12%) with a mixture of floral, fruit and soil notes and an austere palate with dusty minerality, vibrant and pungent flavors and a clean finish. 2,320 bottles were filled in July 2023.
Viñátigo, the project from Juan Jesús Méndez, was one of the pioneers of the local varieties in the Canary Islands, where he's been recovering forgotten varieties since 1990. He's now joined by his son Jorge, who is giving a more modern profile to the wines. In 2017, there was a new range of single-vineyard and lieu-dit wines that go one step beyond in 2022, with three new whites from the north of Tenerife. They are all produced with Listán Blanco from different zones and altitudes, climates and soils. They have 12 hectares of vines in the north and northeast of Tenerife, and their production averages 150,000 bottles per year.

This Chardonnay is a blend of estate (Senchuk Vineyard) grapes and three different blocks from the Grimsby Hillside Vineyard across the road. The grapes were whole cluster pressed and parcels kept separate. The juice was allowed to settle prior to being racked to French oak barrels (25% new, 75% old) and aged for 10 months. “This is very much our style (for Chardonnay),” said Senchuk. “It gives people a typical, West Niagara vibe.” It shows ripe pear, wet stones and saline, some floral accents, peach pie, lemon and integrated spice notes. It has a rich and creamy texture on the palate with Bosc pear, yellow apples, ripe peach, wet stones, a touch of flint and spice with a finessed and long finish.

Gilvesy Pincészet

Hungarian expat Róbert Gilvesy moved back to his homeland from Canada, and began building the Gilvesy winemaking empire on the former Esterházy estate on Szent György Hill. Thanks to years of hard work, the Hegymagas-based facility now includes a modern building complex and about 13 hectares of vineyards, in addition to being the home of the family. The area is shaped by 6 million years old volcanoes, where indigenous and international varieties grow organically.
Robert’s absolute admiration for nature and the terroir translates into an immense respect for the environment. By farming using organic practices, the soils and the vines stay healthy. In the winery, by letting nature take its course without controlling the processes, and using local resources, such as Hungarian oak barrels, Gilvesy promotes and protects the Balaton region.
Mas Codina

The Mas Codina estate is located in the heart of the Alt Penedès region, comprising of low-lying plains and hills between 250 and 300 metres high.
Until recently, the farm has always grown, and made a livelihood from, cereals, grapes, peaches and vegetables, as well as farm animals. Now, apart from century-old olive trees, all the land is devoted to vineyards.
Mas Codina has been in the same family for generations. They have adopted organic farming practices promoting natural processes and seeking a balanced ecosystem. All because of their love for land and tradition. There are currently 40 hectares of vineyards that are being organically farmed.
Peninsula Vinicultores

Península Vinicultores was founded by two Masters of Wine: Andreas Kubach MW, leads production and Sam Harrop MW directs viticulture. Andreas, raised in Brazil and Spain by German parents, and Sam, a native New Zealander, bring a new-wave, international perspective to the Spanish wine landscape. Andreas believes that in the past century, and notably post-industrialization, Spanish producers have prioritized wines of style, focusing on winemaking and aging, rather than wines of place. This creates what he calls a “ceiling of interest” for terroir. Inspired to change this narrative, he is focusing on small, old-vine plots all over Spain that were either formerly abandoned or are at risk of being ripped out for to plant more lucrative cash crops. The wines also champion local, indigenous varieties traditional to their respective regions and best express site.

It’s just so sad that Riesling has fallen so far from favour with consumers. Senchuk has been a champion of this super-star grape in Niagara since the early days of what was at one time his virtual brand. And he’s never given up on it, no matter how difficult it can be to sell. This expression from nearby Grimsby Hillside Vineyard is world class and is everything I love about this grape in Niagara. Senchuk stopped fermentation at 11 g/l RS and allowed for 11 months of lees aging. The enticing nose shows the full range of saline minerality, lanoline, grapefruit, empire apple, honeysuckle, savoury notes and a touch of ginger. The fresh vein of saline continues on the palate with peach pit, lime citrus, crisp apples, a touch of honeycomb and a vibrant, juicy finish. Can age through 2030.

Aromatic is the ways of Alsatian white blends, noble and arguably more Edelzwicker than Gentil. Alsace is a place where historically the grape variety is highlighted on the label, more so than the region, but these blends transform that thought. Noble follows that particular tradition with this blend celebrating growers and the places they farm. Comes together just a shade above bone dry, layered with citrus and a side of creamy orchard fruit, from riesling with gewürztraminer, ehrenfelser, oraniensteiner & pinot gris. Profoundly important for B.C. white wine, essential and appropriate, for wherever and whenever a bottle needs sharing. Drink 2026-2029. Tasted May 2026.

Both clones in the estate vineyard — 76 and 96 — were hand-picked, hand-sorted and gently whole cluster pressed into separate tanks for cold settling. After two days, each clone was racked into puncheons and barriques for fermentation and aging in barrel for 17 months. The Senchuk Vineyard is only 800 meters away from Grimsby Hillside, but the Chardonnay shows a profile all its own. This is more opulent and expressive from the get-go (compared to Grimsby Hillside) with lemon cream, honey crisp apples, ripe pear, lemon curd, stony minerality and elegant spice notes. It has a luxurious texture on the palate with a melange of stone fruits, creamy notes, flint, wet stones, toasted almonds, lemon tart, integrated spice notes and a long, lifted finish. Can cellar through 2032.

About the Winery
Leaning Post

A leaning post is what you find at the beginning of a row of grapes, anchoring the wires that are the frame-work for growing grapevines. It is the beginning of an obsession to translate a time and place into liquid. Leaning Post wines take you to that beginning by finding small, unique plots of land in Niagara and putting them in bottle. Because after stripping away all the fancy buildings and high-tech equipment you are left with a place on this earth that grows wine unlike any other. When you taste that in a glass you just know it. Nadia and Ilya have had to rely on the support of family, friends and financial institutions to make the dream of owning a winery a reality. Leaning Post began as a virtual winery and is so proud to now have the quaint tasting room at 1491 Hwy 8 on their home property in Winona, Ontario.

This single-vineyard Chardonnay from the Frontier Block in the Grimsby Hillside Vineyard is sourced from two blocks with different Chardonnay clones: clone 76 and clone 96. The clones were kept separate throughout pressing and oak aging. The fruit was whole cluster pressed and allowed to settle for a couple of days before being put into barrel for spontaneous fermentation. The wine remained in French oak barriques on its lees for 15 months. This is much more subtle and elegant than the estate Chardonnay and shows overt minerality qualities such as seashells, flint and saline, then fresh pear, bergamot, lemon zest and savoury spices notes kick in as you swirl the wine in your glass. It shows pure elegance on the palate with lovely savoury (touch of reduction?) minerality, quince, lemon, subtle white peach and a big flinty, lifted and long finish. Can cellar through 2030.

This is a bold and linear and skinny riesling that is not unexpected from the County. The nose shows quite ripe apricot, petrol, clover honey and flinty minerality. It is light to medium bodied (10.5%) crisp and tart, with a lemon-grapefruit finish. All kinds of mineral lickings on the finish in true County fashion. The length is excellent. For those who know what they are looking for. Tasted May 2026

Nervy, steely, mineral, and bone-dry, this angular Prince Edward County riesling is still finding its voice and should reward further cellaring. For now, it offers a vibrant spectrum of green pear, lemon, Granny Smith apple, and lime blossom. Beneath its taut frame, a deeper layer of complexity is beginning to emerge, hinting at greater nuance to come. Tasted May 2026.
