About the Winery
Radford Dale
Radford Dale and The Winery of Good Hope are two brands made by the same people, in the same winery. The team behind these wineries has been an industry leader since the 1990s in chemical free farming, and more recently in low and no sulfur winemaking. They are a founding member of PIWOSA (Premium Independent Wineries of South Africa) which sets ethical, environmental and social uplift standards. Recognizing the social inequality present in South Africa Radford Dale has also set up a trust called Land of Hope to help facilitate bright futures for children, focusing heavily on education.
Alex Dale who owns and manages both projects is an Englishman who grew up spending summers in Burgundy, France. He moved there in his late teens to follow a passion for winemaking and also opened a wine bar in Beaune. He lived in Burgundy for many years before moving to South Africa in 1998, starting Radford Dale with Ben Radford, an Australian. The idea was to produce wines using modern techniques and technology with a healthy respect for tradition, something Alex came to understand well while living in Burgundy.
Wines are made with minimal intervention in order to best express each vineyard’s individuality.Press Reviews

94 Points - Christian Eedes
Grapes from the same Lynedoch vineyard planted in 1969 that supplies Radford Dale's top-end Renaissance bottling. 40% matured in foudre, the rest in a combination of 228-, 300- and 500-litre barrels. Citrus, peach and just the right amount of leesy, waxy complexity on the nose. Great fruit concentration, punchy acidity and pithy, slightly bitter finish. Old-vine Chenin treated with the lightest of hands to great effect

Celler Escoda-Sanahuja

Joan Ramón Escoda founded Celler Escoda Sanahuja in 1999 along with his wife Mari Carmen in Conca del Barbera, Catalonia. Since then, they have been disrupting the wine industry both in their home-country and internationally.
Celler Escoda Sanahuja was one of the first wineries that, back in 2005 stopped adding sulphites to their wines. Joan Ramon has always been a radical winemaker and a grass-roots innovator. His wild enthusiasm has been fuel for the natural winemaking scene, and has also led him to, spontaneously, create the 'Brutal' movement popular in natural wine circles. These are highly individual wines reflecting their origins and their innovative winemaker.
Pre-order: Place your order before March 15th by paying a $50 deposit, and receive your case of wine in early summer.

Punset

While the vineyards that form Punset have been farmed by the Marcarino family for generations, it is truly thanks to Marina and her incredible energy that the estate is how it is nowadays. In the 1980s, she decided to pursue organic farming – a demanding choice that was rewarded by becoming the first estate to receive the organic certification in Italy. Her passion for the soil and the environment led her to embrace biodynamics and the agronomic philosophy of Manasobu Fukuoka. From one of the healthiest vineyards in Italy, Marina crafts wines that brim with life, energy, and pure terroir.
Known for the very first certified organic Barbaresco of Italy, Marina continues to show the world that you can preserve tradition and think of the future simultaneously.

Leaning Post

A leaning post is what you find at the beginning of a row of grapes, anchoring the wires that are the frame-work for growing grapevines. It is the beginning of an obsession to translate a time and place into liquid. Leaning Post wines take you to that beginning by finding small, unique plots of land in Niagara and putting them in bottle. Because after stripping away all the fancy buildings and high-tech equipment you are left with a place on this earth that grows wine unlike any other. When you taste that in a glass you just know it. Nadia and Ilya have had to rely on the support of family, friends and financial institutions to make the dream of owning a winery a reality. Leaning Post began as a virtual winery and is so proud to now have the quaint tasting room at 1491 Hwy 8 on their home property in Winona, Ontario.
Ilya and Nadia are the brains and passion behind Leaning Post Wines. It started with a dream to take unique, interesting single vineyard blocks in Niagara and turn them into distinctive, terroir driven wines. Nadia and Ilya first met in their hometown of Winnipeg, MB where their passion for wine and each other was born.
Ilya has been a winemaker in the Niagara Region for the last 17 vintages working at Daniel Lenko Estate Winery, Foreign Affair and now at Leaning Post Wines. Ilya is also a consulting winemaker at the Good Earth Winery. Ilya’s true passion in life is to make world renowned wines from Niagara that really showcase the distinct terroir that Niagara offers.

The Sauvignon Blanc grapes were sourced from the Niagara Lakeshore sub-appellation. The wine was split between two different vessels (neutral French oak barriques and stainless-steel tank) to be aged on its lees for 7 months. This is a more elegant style of savvy, compared to the racy, zippy examples from New Zealand. It has a nose of kiwi, mango, grapefruit, subtle garden herbs and spice notes. It has a lovely, creamy texture with tropical fruits, limes, grassy/herbaceous notes and a bright, finessed finish. Can drink this now and for the next couple of years.

Gilvesy Pincészet

Hungarian expat Róbert Gilvesy moved back to his homeland from Canada, and began building the Gilvesy winemaking empire on the former Esterházy estate on Szent György Hill. Thanks to years of hard work, the Hegymagas-based facility now includes a modern building complex and about 13 hectares of vineyards, in addition to being the home of the family. The area is shaped by 6 million years old volcanoes, where indigenous and international varieties grow organically.
Robert’s absolute admiration for nature and the terroir translates into an immense respect for the environment. By farming using organic practices, the soils and the vines stay healthy. In the winery, by letting nature take its course without controlling the processes, and using local resources, such as Hungarian oak barrels, Gilvesy promotes and protects the Balaton region.

The Hemeris Vineyard on the Beamsville Bench, which is a favourite farm of Senchuk’s, is a gem owned by the Kouvassilopoulos family. The over 40-year-old Chardonnay vines are the base for this traditionally made sparkling wine that spends six months in oaks barrels, with 42 months on the less, and a 6 g/l dosage. It shows a lovely golden colour in the glass with a lively bubbly. It starts with autolytic/biscuit notes on the nose followed by lemon curd, golden apple, pear, white flowers and brioche. The bead on the palate is vigorous with a rich, creamy, saline entry and just a hint of flint. It’s fresh and finessed with lemon tart, stone fruits, nutty accents, toasty brioche and mouth-watering acidity on the lifted, fresh finish.

After being transferred to French oak barrels (25% new, 25% 1-year-old barrels, 50% older barrels) the wine is aged for 15 months. The nose shows a generous array of red berries, floral notes, earth and perfumed spice notes. Sister's Run

Sister’s Run is serious fun. Their talented young winemaker Elena wears steel cap work boots every day of course, but carries a pair of high heels in back of the ute, only for emergencies, like last minute invitations to accept trophies at gala wine show dinners and the like.
Returning from a ‘knees-up’ at midnight, mid vintage, she managed to kick off one high heel and slip back into a boot’ just as the cellar crew cried out, ‘Run Sister Run’; and exactly then their winemaker and label took flight!
The stiletto and boot are Sister’s Run; an independently owned and operated winery with a fierce commitment to making the best wines they can from family vineyards. They don’t take ourselves as seriously as we take our wines, but agree with Elena, all you need to know about wine is the five ‘V’s and remember the best wine is the wine you like.

Stéphane Aviron

Stéphane Aviron can be considered a pioneer in his approach to winemaking in Beaujolais, however he would just tell you that he’s simply returning to the traditional practices that have always made fantastic Gamay wines. Sustainable viticulture, extremely old vines and classic Burgundian techniques. He focuses on the Beaujolais village crus, all but forgotten gems of vineyards when the nouveau craze took over, which are the best sites for unique, expressive and terroir driven wines. All of the fruit is sourced from old vines (40+ years), so seeing Vieilles Vignes on the label is a rite of passage, not a privilege. Authenticity and a distinctly Beaujolais style of winemaking is what sets Stéphane apart from the rest.

A very delicate Fleury with elegant aromatic character such as dried leaf, white pepper, raspberry and floral notes. The palate features natural fruit spice and somewhat angular tannins. Quite fresh with wet stone and cherries on the finish of considerable length.
91 points (2019) - David Lawrason
Fleurie to my mind is always the most silky and refined of the Beaujolais cru, and this captures that essence. The nose is not overtly generous but it displays fine cherry jam, gentle florality and spice aromas. Love the texture here with some warmth, very fine tannin and excellent length. Just a touch earthy on the finish. Tasted March 2021.

The fifth of six old vines wines in the Aviron Cru Beaujolais series, here from a toponym that refers to one (or two) hamlets in Aviron, Madrière or Madrière(s). Not sure which cru might be the king (likely Moulin) but Fleurie is oft referred to as "The Queen of Beaujolais.” Must be because it takes complete control and calls the shots, here in Aviron’s 2019 as a matriarch of strength, nobility and class. Firm yet elastic, higher in acids to lift, aerate and stretch the fruit towards a rising tannic sensation. The real deal and the one to slowly unwind well into the end of this decade. Drink 2022-2028. Tasted March 2021.
92 points (2019) - John Szabo, MS
A cru Beaujolais of considerable substance and flesh, also very firm and stony, with genuine old vine richness and above all balance, very floral. I like the comfort and ease of the concentration and depth, not forced, overripe nor over-extracted, just proof of honest old vine richness. A soul at rest. Tasted March 2021.

This Chardonnay is a blend of estate (Senchuk Vineyard) grapes and three different blocks from the Grimsby Hillside Vineyard across the road. The grapes were whole cluster pressed and parcels kept separate. The juice was allowed to settle prior to being racked to French oak barrels (25% new, 75% old) and aged for 10 months. “This is very much our style (for Chardonnay),” said Senchuk. “It gives people a typical, West Niagara vibe.” It shows ripe pear, wet stones and saline, some floral accents, peach pie, lemon and integrated spice notes. It has a rich and creamy texture on the palate with Bosc pear, yellow apples, ripe peach, wet stones, a touch of flint and spice with a finessed and long finish.

Wines in Niagara
94 points - Rick VanSickle
Both clones in the estate vineyard — 76 and 96 — were hand-picked, hand-sorted and gently whole cluster pressed into separate tanks for cold settling. After two days, each clone was racked into puncheons and barriques for fermentation and aging in barrel for 17 months. The Senchuk Vineyard is only 800 meters away from Grimsby Hillside, but the Chardonnay shows a profile all its own. This is more opulent and expressive from the get-go (compared to Grimsby Hillside) with lemon cream, honey crisp apples, ripe pear, lemon curd, stony minerality and elegant spice notes. It has a luxurious texture on the palate with a melange of stone fruits, creamy notes, flint, wet stones, toasted almonds, lemon tart, integrated spice notes and a long, lifted finish. Can cellar through 2032.
