Founded in 2005 by renowned Burgundian vigneron Nicolas Potel, Domaine de Bellene was born from the acquisition of exceptional old-vine parcels across some of Burgundy’s most prized terroirs. Based in Beaune, the estate is housed in beautifully restored 16th-century buildings that reflect Nicolas’ deep respect for nature and commitment to sustainable practices. Each vineyard plot is cultivated and vinified according to organic principles, with a focus on preserving the character and integrity of the land. Following Nicolas’ passing in 2025, his son Alphonse and daughter Antonia have taken up the mantle, continuing their father’s vision and dedication to crafting authentic expressions of Burgundy.
The 2024 vintage marks the final wines produced by Nicolas Potel at Domaine de Bellene, crafted alongside his children. A challenging growing season brought early setbacks, impacting fruit set and increasing disease pressure across Burgundy, which ultimately led to reduced yields—particularly for the delicate Pinot Noir. Despite the difficulties, the vintage produced wines with a fresh, vibrant character, offering plenty to appreciate for those who enjoy a more refined, cooler-climate style of Burgundy with approachability and charm from release.

Led by Nicolas Potel in Beaune, Groupe Bellene is composed of the négociant arm Maison Roche de Bellene, the winery arm Domaine de Bellene, and a special back-vintage series under the Collection Bellenum label.

He trained abroad and returned home in 1996 to build a négociant business and started Maison Nicolas Potel, where he sourced grapes from good parcels, often working with the growers to improve the quality. By 2002, he was making 120 wines from 50 different appellations, and the rest is history!

I always look for a certain tenderness in Savigny, which this captures. This is a very elegant, lithe and flavourful with a generous, ripe nose of pineapple custard, considerable yeast/toasty, lemon and nutmeg. It is very smooth, racy and a touch sweet. Excellent length

This is fairly deeply coloured with a lifted, spicy, almost toasty nose, with lemon meringue pie and pineapple. It is medium-full bodied, quite linear and rich with some stoniness. Great focus here. And energy. Almost a sense of tannin, with wet stone on the finish. The length is excellent to outstanding. This could age very well.

So interesting that this has the same gravelly, hay, tea and spice aromatics as the Beaune 1er Cru pinot noir tasted same day. Terroir transmitting through different colours. Expect ripe peach, vanilla custard as well. It is full bodied, open knit and very intense - quite powerful yet showing some elegance. The length is outstanding. Should age a decade or more.
