Husband and wife winemaker team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux, set out with a shared vision to create authentic Swartland wines that reflect the distinct terroir of the region while embracing reasoned, sustainable farming practices and modern minimalist winemaking. Their commitment to quality and their deep respect for the environment and their employees have earned them acclaim both nationally and internationally, and has led to Mullineux being awarded South African Winery of the Year an unprecedented five times by the highly respected Platter’s Guide.

Highlighted by fresh quince, white peach and hints of lime, the nose of this Chenin Blanc is greatly inviting, and it follows through with a firm chalky texture and a lively, zesty finish.  The ageing potential is at least 20 years, and this wine will show optimally if decanted.

About the Winery

Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines

Mullineux Family Wines, established in 2007 in the Swartland region of South Africa, is owned and managed by Chris and Andrea Mullineux. Since its inception the winery has established itself as one of South Africa’s most celebrated wine brands, both locally and internationally. Originally from Northern California, Winemaker Andrea Mullineux studied Viticulture and Oenology at UC-Davis before working in Stellenbosch and meeting Chris at a wine festival in Champagne. Chris is the Viticulturist in charge of the vineyards on their farm on Kasteelberg Mountain as well as fruit sourcing for their value Kloof Street wines.

The vineyards at Roundstone are farmed organically and are in the process of becoming Regenerative Organic certified. This involves practices like crop rotation, no-till farming, and eliminating chemical pesticides and fertilizers. These methods help rehabilitate soil, promote animal welfare, and improve farmers' livelihoods while sequestering carbon and producing healthier yields. In the winery, no additives are used aside from minimal sulfur dioxide, and all operations are IPW certified, following environmental best practices. Waste, including grape skins and lees, is recycled or repurposed, and cellar effluent is processed through an eco-friendly wetland system.

97+ Points - Greg Sherwood, MW

Produced from grapes grown in a vineyard just below the Mullineux's main house on the Roundstone property on shallow rocky soils, with much smaller 'bonsai-style' bush vines yielding small grapes loaded with extra phenolics and more exposure to the sunlight. The aromatics are rich, exotic, and intense, packed full of white and orange citrus, fynbos, nectarine, honey, white peaches, and juicy honeydew melon nuances. As Chris says, you can definitely taste the sunshine on the grapes with this 2023 Schist. The palate is equally intense and concentrated, boasting layer upon layer of peach, tangerine, and sour yellow plum fruit before a zesty, vibrant acidity kicks in to add freshness and extra frame to the mouthfeel. Finishing with a subtle leesy, buttered white toast complexity, this is definitely a very special premium Chenin Blanc release from the Mullineuxs. Drink on release and over the next 10 to 15+ years.
