Domaine Andre Aubert
At the very heart of the Rhône Valley, at the northerly tip of the Southern Rhône, lie the vineyards of Grignan-Les-Adhémar. The chances are you haven’t heard the name before, few people have, but the wines are worth seeking out. It’s not a new wine region – vines have been planted here since around 500BC but it is a new name (formerly known as Côteaux-du-Tricastin). Domaine André Aubert, has been formed over decades and today comprises of more than 280 hectares spread from north to south of the prestigious Southern Rhone Valley on the appellations Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône villages, Visan, and Grignan-les-Adhémar.

Huge value in a very stylish, pure and correct southern Rhone blend from a region in the north of the region. This shows a lovely, generous sweet strawberry/cherry nose with vanillin/nougat, red rose fine tobacco/dried herbs. It is medium weight, open knit, smooth and almost a touch sweet with very fine chalky tannin. Great fruit presence and warmth make this so appealing. And the length is excellent. Tasted May 2026.

The Auberts farm 280 hectares throughout the southern Rhône, this northerly appellation of Grignan-les-Adémar is the family's home base and they are considered pioneers in the region. The 2022 Le Devoy is a blend of grenache (40%), syrah (40%) and carignan (20%) whose vines average 40-years of age on galets roulés, is matured in cement vats. Its oak-free flavour profile highlights youthful fruit, pepper, and garrigue from this windswept appellation. Concentration is notable and the tannins are firm and linear. Excellent length. Mainly dolcetto (70 per cent) with barbera and nebbiolo. Not much of the latter but necessary to widen the expression of the Langhe. Here it’s an explanation point, not a question, as in a confirmation of the exclamatory Piedmontese expression. Bright red amalgamated fruit with proper acidity and the ability to work alongside anyone and all. Drink 2019-2022. Tasted November 2019.

Château du Moulin Noir
This beautiful right-bank Bordeaux estate consistently produces high-value, elegant and classic Merlot dominant wines and is considered one of the most famous Château of this appellation. Located in Montagne-Saint-Emilion, Château Moulin Noir consists of seven hectares of vineyards on clay and limestone soils.
This château owes its name to a family feuddating back to the Middle Ages. Two brothers were arguing about their father’s legacy with the youngest brother being incredibly jealous that everything went to the elder. He was so jealous that he burnt the château to the ground - Moulin Noir translates to “blackened Mill”.

Pardevalles is recognized for being one of the driving forces behind the D.O Tierra de León, betting on the development of the indigenous grape varieties Prieto Picudo and Albarín Blanco. In 1949 Rafael Alonso founded Pardevalles continuing with the family tradition of growing grapes and making wine. The winemaking tradition in León goes back more than 400 years, famous for its centuries-old caves where wine was originally made.The vineyards of Pardevalles are located between 750 and 820 metres above sea level, in an area with a Continental climate. They grow in poor, rocky alluvial soils which helps maintain the freshness in the wines. The philosophy of the Estate is grounded in making wines which express the character and identity of their origin, with a deep respect for the earth and the indigenous varieties of grape, combining tradition, innovation, and hard work.

The early 2000s saw a revival in the albarín grape variety planted largely in the higher elevations of Castilla y León in southwestern Spain and a majority of that is being produced by Pardevalles. This refreshing and zesty expression offers an abundance of flavour from starfruit, lime, and yellow apple, to elderflower and toasty lees. Sure to be a hit with fans of sauvignon blanc and vermentino. An effortlessly elegant sipper with notable length. Tasted February 2024.

Cascina Castlèt has belonged to the Borio family for generations; Mariuccia, the current owner, inherited it from her father in 1970. Mariuccia focuses on her terroir and the local varieties. The vineyards of the estate are spread over 31 hectares, and are all located in Costigliole d'Asti.

About the Winery
Mas Codina
The Mas Codina estate is located in the heart of the Alt Penedès region, comprising of low-lying plains and hills between 250 and 300 metres high.
Until recently, the farm has always grown, and made a livelihood from, cereals, grapes, peaches and vegetables, as well as farm animals. Now, apart from century-old olive trees, all the land is devoted to vineyards.
Mas Codina has been in the same family for generations. They have adopted organic farming practices promoting natural processes and seeking a balanced ecosystem. All because of their love for land and tradition. There are currently 40 hectares of vineyards that are being organically farmed.

This is a quite fine, firm and elegant cava with nicely placed yellow fruit, mineral and some wet stone and light bready character. This has good character. Nicely firm and dry with a nutty, slightly bitter finish. The length is excellent. Tasted March 2022.

Attractive aromatics and balance on the palate are features here on this well-made and flavourful cava, in the brut nature style (no added sugar), though neither hard nor overly tart. I like the toasty, creamy citrus fruit - lees ageing flavours are in stark relief, mixing with a good degree and range of other flavours, from fruit to nuts and beyond. Very good length, too. An impressive example in the category, and better than the last bottling tasted in March of 2022. Tasted November 2025. Previous: Here's a ripe and creamy, but also crisp and bone dry Cava with fine flavour definition and concentration, and decent length. Ripe citrus, orange and lemon zest, and gentle sweet herbal notes lead on the palate. Ready to drink. Tasted March 2022.

Singular Cava work from a 40 hectare estate in the Alt Penedès dating to 1681. Organic, estate bottled and vines 20-30 years of age. 2023 is a fine vintage for Calcinaia's entry point "Cappone" bottling of Chianti Classico (owned by the current conte, or count, Cappone), ripe and generous but also clearly delineated and precise, with textbook savoury cherry flavours, red and black, and comfortably ripe tannins and acids. There's a pleasant ease and accessibility on the palate, an inviting profile that will be best enjoyed over the next 2-3 years. Textbook; certified organic as a bonus. Tasted January 2026.

The dream of 4 French partners in Argentina's Mendoza region can be found 200 kilometers from the district capital, in the South of the region, in the town of San Rafael. This is quite a classic representation of malbec, with notes of nutmeg, cloves, and dried leaves serving as top notes, followed by flavours of damson plums and blueberries. The palate is medium to full bodied and approachable, with fine-grained tannins and succulent acidity. The long finish displays accents of vanilla and dried henna, then diffused warmth. Pours a luminous, deep pink, this rosada from Leon is made entirely of the indigenous prieto picudo grape, more typically a blending variety with dark skins and often resulting in wines with licorice-tinged black and red fruit. With youthful exuberance and potency, this salty and succulent expression features a wealth of lightly candied red berries, slippery tannins and a touch of welcome bitterness that contributes balance and a sensation of freshness. Best to enjoy in its youthful condition but it has the concentration for another year or two of aging. Tasted February 2024.

Bodegas Puiggròs
Since 1843, the Puiggros family has been producing wines from their own vines in the Odena region of Catalunya for the family and close friends. Over generations they had come to realize that their vineyards and techniques were something worth sharing with the world. A sincere dedication to the terroir in their zone and the indigenous varieties that grow there, allows them to constantly discover ways to unlock all of the magic that lies within their land.
Starting with conscious and clean farming in the vineyard, they hand-harvest only the best fruit for their production, and ferment each vineyard separately in varying vessels to accentuate what the vines have to show; some in stainless steel, and many in clay amphora of differing sizes. All the while seeing very little sulfur use (if any) until bottling. Puiggros is pushing the quality of northeastern Spain's wines forward, and doing so in a clean and unique way.

Of Catalonian garnatxa blanca planted upwards of 600m on limestone and clay before aging judiciously inside 800L clay amphora. A going concern of method and style for white grenache in this northerly part of Spain and 2023 comes away as clean and fleshy as any previous vintages. Sapid with an herbal-botanical element while fruit is so bloody persistent in its ability to shine. These are the right kinds of tonics and bitters to fulfill a garnacha raised in amphora dream. Drink 2025-2028. Tasted November 2025.

High-elevation white garnacha raised in amphora, delivering a juicy and engaging profile in eye-catching packaging. Clean, bright, and subtly salty with flavours of peach, lemon zest, chamomile and dried herbs. It's nervy and deceptively complex, finishing with a gentle swell of warmth from otherwise unassuming alcohol. Excellent length. Drink now or hold 2-3 years. Tasted November 2025.

Château de Parnay
Château de Parnay is the flagship of the AOC Saumur Champigny. The property is located along the Loire river, classified as UNESCO World Heritage, on the most reputable clay and limestone terroirs of the appellation. The historic property was taken over by Mathias Levron & Régis Vincenot in 2006 with the aim of restoring the nobility of this special place.
Drawing their strength from the authenticity of their values, they now cultivate 50 hectares of vines with the aim of producing exceptional wines in a way that respects the environment. They have been certified organic since 2013 and are about to be certified biodynamic too.
The Clos of Chemin des Murs is the jewel of the property! Coming from the imagination of it's orginal owner, Antoine Cristal, this Clos was built, planted and cultivated according to an unprecedented technique. On this half hectare of Chenin Blanc, each vine was planted on the north face of a stone wall. Through a hole in the stone the vine crosses through the wall and allowing the grapes to grow facing the southern sunshine. The vine is said to have its 'foot in the cool and belly in the sun'.

This is a concentrated, complex, gracefully balanced cabernet franc. Notes of ripe red plums, blackberries, dark cherries, tobacco, dried leaves, and violets are interwoven here to form an elegant, engaging, and varietally representative flavour profile. The palate is densely flavoured but lithe, with fine-grained tannins and refreshing acids. The finish is long, layered, and captivating. Though it can be enjoyed now, I would cellar this for 2-3 years. Tasted January 2024.

This is a serious cab franc indeed - not so much in terms of weight and power, but in its complexity, poise and length. It’s a deeply coloured for franc. The nose shows fine, ripe raspberry, perfectly pitched by fresh herbs, tobacco and violet. It is loosely structured mid-palate, and a touch warm, with slightly green tannin. The length is excellent. I would age it a year or three. Tasted January 2024

Silky and refined, elegant but dense, this Saumur Champigny (cabernet franc) is a substantial and serious wine, with a high degree of textbook regional character, complete with a touch of green-herbal, varietal flavour. Tannins are fine and dusty, acids gently salty, and length good to very good. I'd suggest another year or two in the cellar to further refine the texture and develop complexity - potential I think is high. Tasted January 2024.

Viñátigo
Juan Jesús is a proud native of Tenerife and the fourth generation of growers. During the thirty years that he's overseen Bodegas Viñátigo, he has considerably increased its holdings, planting varieties that he and his team recuperated from near extinction.
Driven by passion and love for his homeland, Juan decided to revive and work to save the native grape varieties that were brought to the Canary Islands by the conquers back in the 15th century and that had survived on the islands for centuries. He is a hero of contemporary Canarian viticulture. The wealth of knowledge that his work has created has helped underpin the significant expansion of wine styles that are now available throughout the archipelago, and his wines have achieved a calibre of class that many doubted the Canaries would ever produce again. Freshest of freshest varietal listán negro which means the hyperbole of acidity distracts from detecting any serious tannin while fruit and volcanic hypotheticals create their necessary union. The unmistakable and impalpable listán negro is expressed through a house’s consistent, persistent and unwavering purity, without grift or deception. If "your sensibilities are shaken by the slightest defect" please do not worry and don't call the police because "slight" is the operative word. This is the Viñátigo way and this their accessible red wine in celebration of clarity from a place. Getting at this 2024 involves no early indication of potential danger or failure but instead the prospect of delicious drinking for these next few years. No canary in a coal mine indeed but yet a character that is expressly Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Oh joy, oh rapture for a crispy varietal red seemingly always “acertado,” readied, on call and on point. This volcanic red from the sub-tropical Atlantic outpost of Tenerife, is made from the local listán negro is juicy and naturally spicy with the faintest hint of volatility adding character to the wine. Tannins are lightly grippy with snappy acids on the palate. Engaging and versatile with food. Ready to drink but don't serve too warm. Tasted June 2025.

This is an intriguing and distinctive listán negro, with aromas of ripe red berries, cherries, and pomegranates amplified by a whiff of volatile acidity. These fruit flavours are accompanied by pleasing flavours of dried savoury herbs, including juniper and rosemary, crushed wildflowers, and a hint of spice. The palate is medium bodied, with fine, drying tannins and crisp acidity, while the finish is long and fragrant, with notes of sweet herbs peaking on the long, layered finish. I would enjoy this wine sooner rather than later, ideally over the next year. Tasted June 2025.
