Nestled beneath the imposing Helderberg Mountain, Metzer Wines comes from South Africa’s lower Helderberg region, just five kilometres from the shores of False Bay. Founded in 2006 by Wade Metzer—one of the country’s most exciting young talents—after mentoring with the influential Eben Sadie, the estate focuses on mature vineyards and heritage grapes, particularly Chenin Blanc and Cinsault. With minimal intervention, light handling, indigenous yeast fermentation, and subtle oak ageing, Wade crafts wines that are expressive and authentic, capturing both the personality of the fruit and the essence of the Helderberg.

The Montane Chenin is a single-vineyard wine from a bush vine parcel planted in 1964, situated on the foothills of the Helderberg West Peak. Opening with an understated bouquet that gently unfolds in the glass, revealing subtle notes of apple, hay, and ginger spice. The palate is finely balanced and driven more by texture than overt flavour, with a vibrant mineral core and a hint of citrus on the finish, leaving a delicate tannic grip as the wine fades.

This style is all about tension and texture, a dynamic push and pull between acidity, tannin and minerality. A cerebral wine which will reward several years of cellaring.

From vineyard planted in 1964 in the Helderberg foothills. Matured for 10 months in older oak. Exotic aromatics of orange, melon, mango, pineapple, some yeasty complexity and spice. Rich, round and textured with tangy acidity and a savoury finish. Hugely flavourful.
