About the Winery
Villa Calcinaia

Nestled in the rolling hills of Greve in Chianti, Villa Calcinaia is one of Chianti Classicoβs historic estates, stewarded by the Capponi family since 1524. For more than five centuries, the family has cultivated these vineyards with a deep respect for tradition, place, and the enduring character of Sangiovese.
The estate spans sun-drenched slopes, olive groves, and woodlands that frame vineyards rooted in galestro and alberese soilsβhallmarks of great Chianti Classico. Here, elevation, exposure, and soil diversity converge to shape wines of elegance, structure, and unmistakable terroir.
Villa Calcinaiaβs philosophy marries heritage with thoughtful innovation. Vineyard work is guided by sustainable practices and careful parcel selection, and the estateβs wines are certified organic, reflecting a long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and the health of the land. In the cellar, the approach favors gentle extraction and patient aging to preserve purity of fruit and nuance of site. The result is a portfolio that captures the soul of Chianti Classicoβfrom vibrant, expressive bottlings to refined Riservas and Gran Selezione wines that reward time in the cellar.
At Villa Calcinaia, winemaking is not a trend but a legacyβan unbroken conversation between land, family, and vine that continues to define the estateβs distinctive voice within Chianti Classico.

Tony Wood Italian Wine
93-95 points
Medium ruby red in colour. Floral aromas of red rose petal, gardenia, ground ginger and blackberry. Rainier cherry, pomegranate, spiced orange peel, salty liquorice and crushed terracotta. Waves of minty freshness. Silky red with a razor sharp edge of acidity. Linear. Balanced. Focused.

93 points (2021) - Michael Godel
A deeper and richer inhalant for sangiovese, surely as compared to the Annata β22 and also many peers in the region. Fermented in 50 hL cement vats and open tonneaux, aged 20 years in cask, tonneaux and cement. Strays but nowhere from its strength and grip though with 20 minutes in the glass the floral and generous components begin to emerge. Riserva must have time in bottle and glass. It is essential towards seeing what is possible. Sweetness of acidity elevates fruit and allows it to stand up to structure. Drink 2026-2030. Tasted September 2025.

Decanter Magazine
93 Points - James Button
Intense menthol and dark fruit aromas segue to a tight and drying palate, showing both sapidity and salinity. There's freshness of acidity and purity of cool black and blue fruits in the background – but at present it remains veiled behind the wood. This needs time but will come good. Since last year, Fabio Motta has been under majority control of Agricole Gussalli Beretta, the historic arms manufacturers who already own several other wineries in Italy.
