Clos Bel-Air is a charming 3-hectare estate set on the clay-limestone hillsides bordering the village of Lussac in Saint-Émilion, where Merlot dominates the plantings alongside a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc. Managed under the Sustainable HVE designation since 2016, the vineyard embraces regenerative, biodiversity-focused viticulture that prioritizes environmental stewardship and soil health. Owned by the Tessandier family—longstanding members of the Bordeaux wine community and proprietors of Château Moulin Noir, Château Lescalle, Château Maucamps, and Clos de May—the estate reflects an artisanal and responsible approach to winemaking, uniting family tradition, respect for the environment, and the authentic expression of the Lussac terroir.

Aromas of ripe currants and wild blackberries unfold with notes of sweet clove and anise, layered with a subtle hint of undergrowth. Medium-bodied on the palate, the wine shows a plush texture supported by fine, powdery tannins, with flavours of blackcurrant leaf and dark chocolate adding depth and complexity. Balanced and refined, this classic vintage captures the charm and understated elegance that define a traditional Right Bank blend.

Hanging tough, firm, taut and focused or a 2018 Bordeaux of such reasonable means. Fruit shows a hint or two of leathery, drying and secondary character but ample freshness persists. Stays well afloat without any logged behaviour dragging the fruit downwards or exhausting the wines spirit. Feel comfortable popping bottles for two more years. Last tasted January 2025.

Still very much a youthful Bordeaux with primary fruit not just intact but exhibiting all that joyous exuberance you want from a value-based Right Bank wine. Nice little touch of orange zest and toasted wood wafts. Creamed centre and plenty of parochial tact, followed by a liquifying of chalky tannins. Tight little package here and more than tidy value for current consumption and good drinking four or five years further down the line. Drink 2023-2027.
