As with many family domaines with deep roots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, vigneron Alexandre Favier was, by his own account, “raised in the vineyards”: Alexandre’s grandfather, Noël Sabon, is from one of the best known winemaking families in the region. Alexandre himself began his viticultural studies in Orange at the age of fifteen and passed the exams four years later in 2001. A year later (at age twenty!) he took over winemaking duties at the domaine when his father experienced health problems. Today, Domaine Chante Cigale is one of the most important family estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

This is a traditional house with 40 hectares of red grapes and 5 hectares of white. They have parcels on all of the main soil types of Châteauneuf and the top parcels are each vinified separately. Only native yeasts are employed in the cellar and the hand harvested grapes are double sorted before being destemmed and lightly pressed. The resulting wine is deep red in colour,  showing layers of black fruit and fragrant liquorice spice aromas. Powerful mouth, fleshy and concentrated with dense but very fine grained tannins.

A wine that will preform well with roasted meats - pigeon, lamb or peking duck. Also a fine match with sheep’s cheese.

The Wine Advocate

92-94 Points - Joe Czerwinski

An 80-20 blend of Mourvèdre and Grenache, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Extrait features dark notes of cola, black olive and black cherries. It's full-bodied and richly textured, with hints of cocoa on the tannic, drying finish. Still in wood, this will need a couple of years after release to round into form, and it should drink well for at least a decade thereafter.
