A Manhattan-based sommelier tastes some Washington State wines and is so inspired, he sells everything to move across the country to make his own. That’s the start of the story of Gramercy Cellars, where a close eye on the grapes (picked for almost-peak ripeness, mostly organic), matched with minimalist wine making techniques (no or little new oak, no additives) and a lot of time (extended aging) has created wine that’s considered some of the best that Washington offers.

In 2017, we loved the Mourvèdre from Alder Ridge & Olsen vineyards so much, we decided to make a Lower East version of the L'Idiot du Village. We continue to be blown away by the complexity and intensity of the Mourvèdre from these two sites and each vineyard contributes something different. Olsen is all about freshness and aromatics. Alder Ridge brings depth and structure. We fermented this with 50% whole cluster and aged it for 18 months in old oak. The final blend on this wine is 75% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah, 5% Grenache. Fermented 50% whole cluster and aged in predominately neutral French barrels and puncheons for 18 months.

Serve with grilled meats and vegetables - perfect for steak night!

The aromas are arresting, with notes of smoked meat, white pepper, raspberry, moist earth and dried herb. The palate is elegant yet flavorful, with a nice yum factor. Peppery notes linger on the finish. Pair it with grilled lamb. Editors' Choice.
