Good Stellenbsoch season, of that there can be no doubt and surely less complaints, especially as it goes for chenin blanc. By count this is the eighth take on the variety by winemaker Jacques de Klerk for the négoce duo of Nicholas Pearce and Will Predhomme, always wild, always alive and never boring. This hums that familiar tune and reminds us all how chenin and Stellenbosch are so intrinsically connected so that a winemaker need only pay attention to timing and details for the wine to make itself. Feels so natural, in synch and on time. Drink 2024-2027. Tasted April 2024.

Cortonesi

Tommaso is third-generation winemaker at Cortonesi that owns some of the most prized vineyards in the north and south-east of Montalcino. Favourable geography, rocky soils, and ingenious winemaking all come together to create some of the region's deepest and most elegant Brunello wines.
The Cortonesi family has been making wine since the 1970s. At first, wines were made to be enjoyed by family, friends and neighbours, but then in 1985, Cortonesi had gained enough traction within their community that they began to offer their wines commercially. Today, Cortonesi remains a family business that continues to work according to tradition, while employing modern technologies to the enhance the quality of their production.
Lovers of Sangiovese must experience “La Mannella”, a collection of wines exclusively sourced from Cortonesi's private vine land. This farm covers 56 hectares, eight of which are devoted to the production of some of the world's most coveted and age-worthy Brunello di Montalcino.

I have always been a fan of this wine. I like its energy, balance and lift. The fragrance is led by fresh rosemary and juicy pomegranate/raspberry red fruits. It is mid-weight, lively, juicy and youthfully fresh. Almost succulent, yet jammy and warm too, with some nervy tannin. The length is excellent. Chill a bit. Tasted January 2026

If ever there were a Léonus from Montalcino sangiovese meant to be bought, sold and consumed one glass at a time, night after night, bottle to bottle and case after case - the 2024 would be that one. Lightest, juiciest, most forthright and getable Léonus ever, or at least in the last 12 years. Indubitably getable and so bloody correct for the Tuscan vintage. Drink 2026-2028. Tasted January 2026.

Deliciously plump and juicy, very fruity, raspberry and blueberry purée flavoured, Cortonesi's 2024 Léonus made from sangiovese grown in the Montalcino area (a declassified, young vines Rosso di Montalcino essentially) is immediately engaging and accessible, soft and ready to enjoy. I love the succulent acids and pure, pristine, ripe fruit, unencumbered by either oak or oxidation. A wine to chill lightly and enjoy over the next year or two. Tasted January 2026.

A lively, bright, and cheerful Toscana blend crafted from sangiovese grown in the Montalcino region. Cleanly made and poised, with well-balanced alcohol, it’s light on its feet, offering notes of wild raspberry and peony. True to the variety, it’s expressive without austerity, with a food-friendly juiciness and very good length. Tasted January 2026.

There is something spontaneous and genuinely charming about this youthful sangiovese from Montalcino. It is appealingly herbal, then fruity, with notes of ripe red berries, red plums, dark cherries joined by subtle tones of toasted cloves and nutmeg. Oak influence is well-integrated. The palate is supple and succulent, with fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins. I especially like the uplifting and bright finish. Tasted January 2026.

Mas Carlot
Mas Carlot is situated in the south of the Rhône Valley, extending across 76 hectares of pebbly land southeast of Nîmes. Originally a 17th century farm, this beautiful estate was resurrected in the 1960's by the Blanc family—it is currently run Cyril Mares of the neighbouring and equally reputable property, Mas Bressades.
The appellation of Costières de Nîmes used to be considered part of eastern Languedoc but the climate, soil, topography and wine are far closer to those just over the river in the Southern Côtes du Rhône. It is now a region very much on the up and is widely recognized as a great source of excellent value wine.

Über clean C-S joint this time around from the Pearce-Predhomme duo by way of Radford Dale in Stellenbosch and the winemaking acumen of Jacques de Klerk. No lack for aromatic volume and syrah adds palate density to otherwise light and transparent Western Cape cinsault. Good showing from 2022, missing some of the natural and volatile swarthiness of previous vintages so look at this as something gained over something lost. Those who wish for crisp, crunchy and as mentioned, very clean will get on board this time. Drink 2024-2027. Tasted April 2024.

Azienda Agricola Tessari
The Tessari family have Soave in their blood. For three generations they have been extracting delectable wine from the well cared for vines of their Monteforte d’Alpone vineyards. With only a little over a hectare of Garganega grapes in the prestigious volcanic solis of Soave Classico, Antonio Tessari hand dug his cellar back in 1933 and started the legacy that continues today with his grandchildren: Germano, Antonio and Cornelia.
From vineyard to bottle, these three siblings oversee it all; with unwavering respect for tradition, quality and passion for the art of winemaking. The volcanic soils of the hillside are rich with basaltic rocks and clays, which guarantees the health of the plant and the promotes the mineral and floral aromas that are characteristic of the Garganega grape. Truly artisanal wine making at it’s best.

This shows the vivid yellow colour I expect from good Soave. It also shows the complex, detailed nose honeysuckle, lemon blossom, camomile and almost tropical peach/mango fruit. It is mid-weight, rich and viscous yet shows some enlivening freshness, spritz and tenderness at the same time. Slightly bitter and lemony on the finish. The length is excellent. Tasted January 2023.

The latest volcanically driven garganega from the Tessari family is a child of a promising vintage full of sun, fun and support. The sky is the limit for just how well this will drink and please. It is in fact bottled salty and fruit crunchy deliciousness and why shouldn’t it be? Made simply with tradition in mind, basalt in pocket and all the modern facility made available. Citrus and nectarine, basil and Maldon salt. Lime all over the finish. Spot on. Drink 2023-2025. Tasted January 2023.

Nervy and salty with a dash of elderflower and pear, this stylish Soave Classico is a favourite of restauranteurs. Richly textured with notes of apple and lemon zest, salt and lime. Quite chalky and dry, with a pleasant degree of roundness despite the moderate level of alcohol. Nicely balanced with a pleasant finish of good length. Drink now. Tasted January 2023.

Clos del Rey
In the foothills of the Pyrénées Mountains, not far from the Mediterranean sea, Clos del Rey is situated in the high altitude hills over the tiny village of Maury. The estate has been owned and farmed by the Montagne family for generations. The vineyard itself is nestled among a protected area of garrigues (rosemary and thyme). The vines of up to 120 years old are allowed to grow natural and untrained, in the old-fashioned way, known as the goblet or bush style. However, it is what lies beneath the vineyard that lends much of the character and complexity found in their wines. Julien Montagne makes complex wines that truly represent his vineyards and his Catalan roots--you can almost smell the sun in the glass.

This is a grenache-based blend from the village/AOC of Maury in the Mediterranean Roussillon region of southeast France. It shows a generous, rounded plummy/black cherry nose with notes of pepper, dried herbs, licorice and some meaty/charcuterie character. It is medium-full bodied, very open knit, juicy and warm - very easy to drink now. There is some heat at 13.5%, with fine chalky tannin. The finish is quite savoury; the length is excellent. The vineyards of Fattoria di Sammontana are located along the hills that border the Arno River, 20km to the south west of Florence. A family estate created by Marie-Noëlle & Laurent Ternynck, Domaine de Mauperthuis is located in Prehy, near the town of Chablis. Their wines express the terroir of this amazing region and the vineyards are currently undergoing the transition to organic. Domaine de Mauperthuis covers around twenty hectares of vineyards around Chablis. The estate, in the Burgundy appellation, is planted in Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon and César, on land facing south, benefiting from exceptional sunshine.

Goutte De Lune, “drop, or tear of the moon,” is a hefty Chablis at the top of the fruit chain. Substantial is the understatement, and still the structure stands up and carries the load. There seems to be no overstatement that can be made about such a wine, and one with the addendum of neither Premier, nor Grand Cru distinction. Just a name and simply Chablis, but the Mauperthuis is anything but. Drink 2026-2030. Tasted August 2026.

This is one of Mauperthuis's sharper and fresher Chablis I've had in recent times, fruit of the challenging, low-yielding, but ultimately fine 2024 Chablis vintage, a return to the cooler years of the 1990s and before. It pours a concerningly sustained straw colour, but picks up the freshness on the palate, remaining stony and contained, chalky and limey, with solid complexity and concentration in the end. Good length, too. Enjoy over the nearer term, now-2030 or so. Tasted August 2026.

Champagne Fresne Ducret
Fresne-Ducret is rich in family history and has been rooted in the premier cru village of Villedommange since the mid 1800s. Originally growing grapes for the big champagne houses, it wasn’t until the end of the second world war that the family decided to make their own wine. The tradition carries on today with Pierre Fresne and his wife Daniella (an Oakville ex-pat). Their philosophy is to produce wines that best exemplify the terroir of Villedommange, and they do this with sustainability in mind.
In 2014, Pierre Fresne embarked on a new adventure by creating a limited series of champagnes based on his desire for experimentation. Since then, he has produced one or two of these wines each year. Each are unique, according to his wishes and the profile of the vintage. This unique collection is called Arquémie, the term for alchemy in the Middle Ages. In 2018 Pierre began converting the vineyards to organic viticulture, and 2021 will be their first organic certified vintage.

This is a very well aged, golden toned Champagne with a very lifted quite oxidative nose of barley sugar, caramelized walnut, burlap and almost turnip-like fruit/root veg aroma. A sad situation when nearly six years passes before having the chance at another taste of this most excellent Champagne. A new level of toast and charm is on display today, and still that revitalizing feeling you get from just one glass. Better yet, make it two. ’Tis the sort to take one’s breath away. When richness, yeasty and warm toasted brioche get together in Champagne the effect is comforting and potentially hypnotizing. From the Premier Cru village of Villedommange dating back to the mid 1800s, the pedigree is noted and the 48 months of lees aging a coup for creating both a creamy and a revitalizing Champagne. There is an oxidative aspect here and it's effectualness is one that imagines exotic spice cupboards, masala mixes and gingery tisanes. Quite the exotic bubble, lightly frothy, elegantly styled, complex and fine. Drink 2020-2026. Tasted October 2020.

Richly nutty and toasty, yet firm and balanced, with gently unfurling layers of dried fruit, this is a memorable Champagne. I like the finely balanced palate that is lifted and supported by bright yet harmonious acidity and subtle sense of richness. The length is abiding. I would pair this sparkling wine with rich foods like gougères, butter-poached lobster, or a creamy cheese like camembert. Tasted July 2026.

Bodegas y Viñedos Pardevalles
Pardevalles is recognized for being one of the driving forces behind the D.O Tierra de León, betting on the development of the indigenous grape varieties Prieto Picudo and Albarín Blanco. In 1949 Rafael Alonso founded Pardevalles continuing with the family tradition of growing grapes and making wine. The winemaking tradition in León goes back more than 400 years, famous for its centuries-old caves where wine was originally made.The vineyards of Pardevalles are located between 750 and 820 metres above sea level, in an area with a Continental climate. They grow in poor, rocky alluvial soils which helps maintain the freshness in the wines. Pours a luminous, deep pink, this rosada from Leon is made entirely of the indigenous prieto picudo grape, more typically a blending variety with dark skins and often resulting in wines with licorice-tinged black and red fruit. With youthful exuberance and potency, this salty and succulent expression features a wealth of lightly candied red berries, slippery tannins and a touch of welcome bitterness that contributes balance and a sensation of freshness. Best to enjoy in its youthful condition but it has the concentration for another year or two of aging. Tasted February 2024.

Domaine de la Garenne
Rooted in the hills of Verdigny for generations, the Godon-Reverdy family has always worked this land — first in service to the Lords of Verdigny, then the cathedral of Bourges, and finally for themselves. The slopes, trees, and fields have shaped the winery's identity, walked by the parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents before them. It was after World War II that their great-grandfather, Amédée Reverdy, became a winemaker — not by plan, but by providence and a fateful draw of the short straw. Since then, each generation has built on that legacy.
Today, Domaine de la Garenne cultivates 12.5 hectares across 37 carefully managed plots in the Sancerre AOC, a renowned Centre-Loire appellation recognized since 1936 for whites and 1959 for reds and rosés. They grow Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, producing dry white, red, and rosé wines shaped by the region's oceanic climate and diverse soils. Their vineyards span three key soil types: Caillottes (chalky and vibrant), Clay-siliceous (flinty and mineral), and Terres Blanches (rich clay-limestone offering fruit and length). Embracing organic and biodynamic practices, they are committed to working in harmony with nature, letting each terroir express itself fully in the wines. This is a generous, tidy and textbook Sancerre hitting all the right notes for sauvignon blanc from this famous upper Loire appellation. The nose is just generous enough to transmit classic grapefruit, nettle, mineral and green pear fruit. It is light to medium bodied, delicate yet fairly taut with a touch of warmth (13% abv). The finish is dry and nicely chalky mineral. The length is excellent. Very cohesive. Price is a bit of a bump but still a value proposition. Tasted May 2025.

Straight from the Sancerre handbook with all three essential soils below and behind a most righteous and ultra correct white wine. Predominantly Caillottes calcaires (72 percent) with Terres Blanches argilo-calcaires (20) and Silex (8) for tripartite sauvignon blanc based on treble, like sounds and instruments that emphasize the high-frequency range of Sancerre audio-ness, played to our palates in brightness, clarity and detail. The terroirs are like violins, flutes, and cymbals, the range of flavours a sibilance in vocals. Top shelf soil, sound and vision from the Alliance. Drink 2025-2031. Tasted May 2025.

This is a lovely, well-balanced and even-keeled Sancerre with evident ripeness and depth but also a ballast of acids and no shortage of freshness, including a point of bitterness that really draws things together and extends the finish admirably. There's also plenty of stones to keep the terroir purists happy, indeed leading the way over subtle limey fruit with a lick of clover honey, the light, fresh, green kind. A delicious wine in the final analysis, best from 2026. Tasted May 2025.

Cordero San Giorgio
Cordero San Giorgio is a new beginning in Oltrépo-Pavese for three siblings who grew up surrounded by their family’s vines at the legendary Vietti Estate in Castiglione Falletto in Barolo. The siblings Francesco, Lorenzo, and Caterina Cordero, are grandchildren of Luciana Vietti & Alfredo Currado, one of the pioneers of the first Barolo crus and considered the “father of Arneis.” Their father is Mario Cordero, Alfredo and Luciana’s son-in-law, who was the company’s co-owner from the beginning of the ‘80s until 2016 when it was sold.
Cordero San Giorgio is located in Santa Giuletta, a village sitting on the first hilly belt of the territory, an area made up of valleys that fan out over the Po Valley with steep slopes and thick ridges. The composition of the soil makes their site particularly suitable for the production of Pinot Nero, making it possible to obtain wines with maximum varietal expression and a strong territorial identity.
The Oltrepò Pavese is a hilly triangle of land in Lombardy, embraced by Piedmont, Liguria, and Emilia-Romagna. A territory dedicated to the cultivation of vines and the culture of wine for centuries: a land of both cultural and gastronomic encounter and exchange. Cordero San Giorgio is in the town of Santa Giuletta, and focuses on working with Pinot Nero, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay.
